Zayn Blake was his nemesis. Boyd stared down at the half pipe and considered the trick. He was sure he could do it, his confidence wasn’t the problem. No, Zayn was the problem. Top of the slope in a clean 360 before pushing through to do that again, one and a half more times, in mere seconds. God, he hated the guy. In reality that was all nonsense of course, Z. was awesome and the fifteen year old looked up to the other boy like no other but Boyd could not stand getting outskated. Not here, not anywhere.
It annoyed him, here he was, competing in almost every competition the nation offered, at a level that his dad would’ve been jealous of at his age and yet he was going under ‘cause of Zayn, freaking, Blake. This couldn't be so hard, right? It was just half a turn more than he was performing every other weekend but apparently streetsmart was outwinning this one today. Fuck.
His jaw set and he stared fixedly at his feet. Boyd wasn’t enjoying himself like he usually was, he had grabbed the deck rail so often, and harder than usual because of his frustration, that his hand had become sore. Yes, he was competitive as hell, so what?
Boyd pushed though, launching himself down and then up the next slope once more. It felt good, he was going to make sure this was it, one final time. The rotation went well. Once. Twice, yes, yes,...,...and another half…YES.
Finally, why had he not been able to get it right sooner? Before he could even finish his thought he felt his balance shifting and instead of some sketchy landing that he would’ve been able to live with he fell flat on his ass. Of course. He got up and irritatedly made his way down from the ramp, ”Screw this, man”
The skatepark next to his dad’s shop was a place he probably spent more time at than the Reid family home. Heck, he even spent more time in the shop attached to it than at the house, a place where he tended to help out if needed. Or, ya know, if it was raining. Nobody had time for serious injuries when you wanted to make dreams come true.
Skateboarding was his life, his passion, born and raised. Boyd would do anything to convince anyone that it was the greatest sport out there. Like, for real. His friend Calli wanted to learn how to use an actual skateboard besides her cruiser and while she didn’t even have to ask him twice he had pretended to make her beg for it. Why not, right? A day without laughter is a day wasted. Besides, Calli made him smile, she was fun to hang out with and a real board was way more superior to one of those oddly shaped ones, like the black sheep of the family in bright fun colors.
”Pads, huh?” Boyd grinned as he sneaked up behind her, ”smart thinking, you.” Things like pads and helmets had always been classified as ‘non cool’ amongst most people but they had been mandatory for most competitions he had entered so it wasn’t anything new to him. Sure, he had gone without protective gear plenty of times but Boyd had also seen severe accidents that would’ve cost people’s lives had they not been protected.
”Which color do you like?” he asked and waited for Calls response before grabbing them off the rack and jumping over the counter in the shop to get to the otherside of the register. ”On the house, shh” he smirked and put one finger to his lips as he made sure to scan the items so as not to mess up his father’s inventory. ”I’ll just tell dad I needed them for this weekend’s comp," he waved off with one hand, "no big deal. You ready to roll?”

at first glance the blonde fifteen year old is a carefree, mellow and open skater boy who does nothing but laugh with just about anyone all day long. Almost the typical boy next door. There is a flip side to it all though, the deck revealing a little rougher side. boyd likes winning. period. and even now as he grows out of being a young child, he finds himself being intensely frustrated by a loss no matter what area of life. flipping over board games and stomping off after losing a round, or messing up a particularly skating trick, happens more frequently than they should. his parents try to work with him on it, and he’s got it in check..sometimes…more or less. other times, it’s still a problem.
the teen puts a lot of pressure on himself and sinks his teeth into anything he does. he doesn’t give up until he’s mastered whatever the hell it is that needs mastering. even if it takes all night. dreams don't come easy and boyd knows maintaining his physical strength and mental health while being on that board and trying to make his way up is going to take hard work. giving things time is something he needs to put slightly more effort into. he gives it his everything but it does take a toll on his social life at times and while his grades are slipping at times (he solely blames his learning difficulty) he is still determined to chase his dream of going pro someday even if it’s going to be one bumpy ride.
he knows he IS more, so he WANTS more.

‘The story of success comes in only when you rehearse it in the ink of failure.’Failure. Pfft. That was for losers. Skateboarding was his outlet. His dream. He had been all of four years old when he tried to follow his father and cousin brother up on the ramps and half pipes only to be guided back to the mini ramps. That was where the love for his board had originated from. To be just like dad and Hunter. The coolest two people he knew.
Boyd was an active kid and he leaned into that, hard. Willow Bridge wasn't a terrible place for that. There were always places to go play, goof off and ride his board but kicks really started to settle in when he realized he wasn’t afraid to try new things and had a knack for keeping his feet glued to the board. He had never expected skateboarding to become more than a social event for him, and his parents hadn't seen that one coming either. (Okay, so maybe his dad had.)
He was aware of Hunter’s situation but has no idea what the boy actually went through. Never in his life seen the older boy as a cousin, he had always been his brother. Boyd had been lucky to enjoy a carefree childhood with a supporting family, nothing like Hunter had before he came to live with them. Nope, he had always been protected and sheltered from the moment he was born even if he didn't see that himself. People had no idea what the hardships were when you came in freakin’ second on nationals.
“Boyd. With a ‘y’& ‘d’” just like his mum had told others over the years whenever she had signed him up anywhere. Not that it mattered to him how they wrote it down since he was dyslexic as hell. Dyslexics have more nuf anyways. It truly was his one obstacle in life though. That particular ramp difficulty rating went through the roof. Oh! he also knew how to jump off the roof with his board but that wasn’t always appreciated anyhow, just as calling the referee at his last competition a ‘fucking jerk’ only to get disqualified. Lame.
Next up: UK National Skateboard Championships.
