It was time. Well, kind of. Calli had convinced Boyd to finally teach her how to skate an actual skateboard. While she knew how to ride a cruiser, it was completely different than riding a smaller wheelbase and harder wheels. There was something scarier riding closer to the ground, even though it wasn’t that much of a difference.
He had told Callie to meet him at the skate park in the city, the one that was attached to his dad’s shop. It would be allegedly quiet since it was still a warm day. Also, a school day. Callie told herself that she would at least be falling in front of a cute boy. She didn’t know what it was about Boyd, but Callie felt things when she hung out with him.
She texted him that she was in the shop and would be buying some pads. Callie knew she would look stupid, but it would keep her mother’s worries down a bit more even though Callie had ridden a cruiser board, barefoot on the beach sidewalk. A slight frown crossed her lips, not even knowing where to look. They all looked…the same.
The skatepark next to his dad’s shop was a place he probably spent more time at than the Reid family home. Heck, he even spent more time in the shop attached to it than at the house, a place where he tended to help out if needed. Or, ya know, if it was raining. Nobody had time for serious injuries when you wanted to make dreams come true.
Skateboarding was his life, his passion, born and raised. Boyd would do anything to convince anyone that it was the greatest sport out there. Like, for real. His friend Calli wanted to learn how to use an actual skateboard besides her cruiser and while she didn’t even have to ask him twice he had pretended to make her beg for it. Why not, right? A day without laughter is a day wasted. Besides, Calli made him smile, she was fun to hang out with and a real board was way more superior to one of those oddly shaped ones, like the black sheep of the family in bright fun colors.
”Pads, huh?” Boyd grinned as he sneaked up behind her, ”smart thinking, you.” Things like pads and helmets had always been classified as ‘non cool’ amongst most people but they had been mandatory for most competitions he had entered so it wasn’t anything new to him. Sure, he had gone without protective gear plenty of times but Boyd had also seen severe accidents that would’ve cost people’s lives had they not been protected.
”Which color do you like?” he asked and waited for Calls response before grabbing them off the rack and jumping over the counter in the shop to get to the otherside of the register. ”On the house, shh” he smirked and put one finger to his lips as he made sure to scan the items so as not to mess up his father’s inventory. ”I’ll just tell dad I needed them for this weekend’s comp," he waved off with one hand, "no big deal. You ready to roll?”
Thankfully her training ear of knowing her surroundings, Calli wasn’t too surprised to hear Boyd. But also played a little of him scaring her, since she knew it made him laugh. Gross. “Yeah, yeah. I have too cute of palms and knees to be scraping up right now,” Calli laughed.
She considered his question on color, forgetting that there was even the option. A lot of the roller skate girls had them, especially the brand Moxi. Not thinking, Calli chose the color scheme of Jade by Moxi. Knowing her though, she’d probably come back to pay Mr. Reid directly. Her mom probably would’ve been side-eyeing her if she hadn’t given something at least.
“Privileges of being friends with the cool kid,” Calli winked. “But I am ready to probably fall on my ass!” she grinned, starting to open her pads. “I’ll need to borrow a helmet, though.” It was a requirement of the skatepark, no matter how old. Kid or adult.
