Jayden was nervous - scratch that, she was anxious and nervous. She had never met parents before. She was young, and though she had been down the boyfriend route before, none of them have ever gotten serious enough for this kind of step. With her own parents missing in action for most of her teenage years, she hadn't had the same upbringing as other people her age - the whole 'meeting the parents' trope. Her aunt and uncle who had looked after her when her parents had left, did their best, but it wasn't quite the same, and her short string of boyfriends were short lived in favour of one night stands and flings that didn't need to mean anything. Jack had meant to be one of them, and then Jack and his surprising personality had weaseled his way into her head and her heart instead.
She knew the pregnancy had a little to do with it - or at least, a little to do with the speed at which they were travelling together. Their original one night had been intended as just that on both sides of the bed, but she hadn't known she was pregnant when she'd surprise bumped into him at the uni; finding out he was a student at the uni she taught was a different matter entirely, and should have sent her on her merry way - and yet, his drunk pleading had enticed her, and she'd given in. The pregnancy part had come in later and she had to admit that for all the times and ways in which Jack could show his age and be childish - he was ridiculously good at being her boyfriend; of making her feel supported, and loved and wanted, and of this child being wanted, despite the circumstances.
She had been apprehensive when Jack had mentioned meeting his family - she was aware that they knew of her, and that they knew she was pregnant, but she didn't know what reception that was going to get. She imagined a bad one, much like speaking to her boss at work - but then he had been surprisingly kind and reasonable, and holding on to that gave her hope that Jack's family wouldn't see her or think of her as some cradle snatching moron, trying to ruin Jack's life. She truly loved the boy, and she saw a life with him, she hoped his family saw it too. Blowing out a nervous breath she glanced at Jack as they approached the front door, unable to give him anything better than an anxious look as she rested her free hand on her protruding bump and the other clenched tightly in Jack's closest hand.
Janie was not in the mood to have some people come into the home. But she would be polite. After school and the barn, she rushed home and showered so she didn’t look like that much of a disaster. She purposely took a bit longer than expected and sat in bed in her bath towel and robe until a parent called for her to quicken up the pace.
She dressed comfortably in something that was polite, but nothing too stiff. After double checking herself in the mirror, she headed downstairs to help mum with whatever food prep that was left. From what it looked like, there was a lot of food around. But it would get eaten quickly with the size of this family.
Sam had made an effort to be on time. He was aware of the day and what was happening today and be knew that his brother and accompanying girlfriend would need support. Not because their family were difficult or anything of the sort, given the way they had welcomed Sam into their home and their family with open arms, he felt they were the most accomodating people he'd ever met, but he knew how nerve wracking it could be to meet the parents, and especially given Jack and Jade's odd circumstances. He'd met her a couple of times and thought she seemed nice. Pretty and sweet, a bit of a funny side that he'd been too nervous to encourage when he'd met her, but he didn't see any reason why Marnie, Kyle or Harper might not like her. Still, support in numbers and all of that. Plus he felt Jack would appreciate it too, if he was there - not that he felt be could be much help given his awkwardness when it came to familial disputes or arguments. He tended to disappear and hide, still not quite able to break the habits of a life time drummed into him that yelling meant punishment and punishment hurt.
He'd managed to finish a little early at his shift and one of his classes had been cancelled, leaving him suddenly plenty of time to get home and make himself presentable. Dinner, he believed, was the occasion and though he had offered, Marnie had turned him down - more likely to spoil her creation that add to it. Instead he showered and changed into some fresh jeans and a shirt, nothing dressy but better than joggers and a t-shirt. By the time he was done he heard the door go and he knew Jade had turned up. He didn't know if Jack was with her or not but he hoped so; better to be there with her than ask her to turn up at the house and risk their mother opening the door first.
Jackson let out a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding. He'd been fine the whole drive over but now that he was stood outside the front door he was a little nervous. Which was extremely rare. Jack didn't do nervous or anxious. He had always been overly confident. He knew how nervous Jade was to meet his family so he was putting it down to him feeding off of her emotions. That, and probably the fact that he was worried his family would go overboard and scare her away. Meeting the family had turned into a full blown family sit down meal which he hoped wouldn't get the chance to turn awkward. He knew he'd have support from Sam if he needed it as he'd trusted his brother enough to introduce them when she'd met his friends. He gave the hand that was on the verge of losing circulation a squeeze then pressed his lips into the side of Jade's fiery hair, in an attempt to comfort her. "Let's do this." He said before opening the door and heading inside. "We're here. . don't all pounce at once." He called out, half joking but also half serious. He didn't want Jade to get overwhelmed.
18 - fun loving - confident - student/barista - falling for JAYDEN GEORGIE ADAMS
if he was being honest, he wished tonight wasn't happening. it might not have been fair but it's how he felt. he was meeting the girlfriend of his younger son. that in itself wasn't the problem. what he was struggling with was the fact that his sons girlfriend was pregnant. that was the part he couldn't wrap his head around. his eighteen year old son was going to become a father. all the stories about how hard it had been for him and marnie when they'd been young and trying to raise a child while studying, working and keeping their heads above water. the drilling safe sex practices into their kids over and over because it was the better option than blanket banning interactions with the opposite sex until they were in their forties apparently. it was a hard situation to think about because on one hand, he wouldn't trade jack for a second or the struggles that he and marnie had had trying to raise him because it had gotten them to where they were today. if none of that had happened they wouldn't have the family they had now but on the other hand he'd wanted so many different things for jack. for him to have an easy college experience, to up and backpack through whatever part of the world he wanted to, to flit from job to job until he found something he liked. it was what he wanted for all his kids, for them to experience so much of life while they were young.
on some level he knew that he wanted it for them because he hadn't been able to. when he'd graduated there had been no changing his mind about anything, it had been straight into a job because he had to provide for his family, the woman he loved and this baby that had changed their lives. but again if he hadn't taken that job he had, he wouldn't have been able to take this one and move their family here which meant they'd never havd taken sam it. it all snowballed, little choices and big choices all mattered and he knew he was a hypocrite for sitting here not wanting to do this evening with the choices he'd made in his life. he was in the kitchen mixing a salad in the kitchen when he heard the front door open and jack's voice rang out from the hall. he finished with the salad, taking a moment to make sure he was collected before he walked across to where kiara had been sitting on the floor, colouring a very abstract looking dog. "come on bub, let's go see jack and his friend." he said as he settled his daughter on his hip and he walked from the kitchen down the hall towards them. "welcome, make yourself at home." he said as he reached them, focusing his gaze on jade. "i'm kyle."
