Janie fiddled with her hair as she looked over the stack of papers in front of her. Homework was nearly done, but she was having a hard time focusing. It wasn’t because the work was difficult, but her mind was elsewhere. Like most teens, Janie was having thoughts and noticing things about her body. Noticing things about other people’s bodies. She personally wasn’t too ashamed of her own, but when she looked at her teammates – and especially, Molly. Janie felt things.
She let out a huff and rested her head on her arms. Summer was coming up, and it would add to the confusion all over again. Janie had hoped she was brave enough to bring it up to her therapist, but she hadn’t yet. There were other things that she talked about in therapy. But she felt the need to talk about it with someone. Her parents, obviously – but she had siblings, too.
Feeling the sudden urge to just word vomit, Janie abandoned her homework. Her feet were light on the stairs. Everyone other than Sam was out for the night, so he was the unlucky soul that would be stuck with all her questions. Her hand gave the three knocks on his bedroom door. “It’s Janie, can we talk?”
Sam sighed, head in his right hand as he left traced the words in the book one more time. Only the one hundredth time today. It just wasn't making sense today, no matter how many times he read it or how many ways he tried - maybe he should try upside down, perhaps that would help. It wasn't due for another week, he had time, but he liked to get things sorted ahead of time so he could do his best. Little teacher's pet maybe, but he'd not had the opportunities as a teenager that other people took for granted. He sighed and sat up in the chair, feeling a familiar ache settle in his neck and down his back. Glancing at the time, he realised he'd been at this for hours, which explained both the ache in his back and the ache of hunger in his stomach. He would hunt something down for a late dinner soon. Marnie would have left something out for him, he knew that, especially with her not being in to cook it for him.
He was glad they'd gone out though, he liked it when they did things for themselves rather than worry about the kids. They were old enough now - aside from Kiara, naturally - to look after themselves. He allowed himself to check his phone, smiling at the message from Heather and shooting back a quick reply to her, along with a GIF in response to Jack whinging about work. He pressed next on his playlist, needing something a little more lighthearted, and heard a quiet knock on the door. “It’s Janie, can we talk?” A little surprise for him, having thought everyone was out, but he smiled and turned in the chair. "Yeah of course, come in." Harper had always been so accepting of him, so quick to call him brother, to treat him like one. She had been the first of the family to start getting through to him when he was a scared teenager in a strange environment. He would protect her with his life, and he always had time for her. "Everything okay?" He asked. It wasn't unusual for her to come knocking, but there was something about her that seemed nervous and concern immediately flooded him.
Janie was thankful when Sam said she could come in. She entered sheepishly, her hands behind her back, twisting in nerves. “Hi Sam. I know it’s an odd question….but…when you first saw Heather, what were you thinking?” she asked. Janie figured it would be better to just blurt it out, than try to drag it out. It was an awkward conversation, no matter who it was with. Her family had their jokes and all that, but they were always there for each other. When things got serious, they knew how to be serious.
“Also, how did you feel? Like…did you feel anything new or scary?” Janie wanted to ask more but decided that she needed to allow her brother to answer those questions first. Her brain was moving a mile a minute, and she had no idea how her face looked now either.
