Aspen made sure he had everything he needed for the trek out today. He had some time off, as well as his friends Danny and Evrett. The weather had been kind enough lately that the trio were able to enjoy a backpacking overnight camping trip together. It wasn’t anything too harsh – as Aspen knew Danny and Evrett most likely needed something a bit lighter. While they were strong hikers, they didn’t have all the time in the world like Aspen did.
After double-checking, he made his way to the start of a hidden beach path – where they all agreed to meet. Aspen knew there was a cabin out that way, but nothing hi-tech. It was shelter, but there was limited power. Mainly some solar-powered lights, but no outlets. Bunks if needed, but Aspen would happily sleep outside if the wind kept calm. The cabin wasn’t too much of a hike, but it was enough for them to hike everything in. It sat overlooking the beach, with a small path down to the sand. A perfect spot for those who want to risk a swim without clothing during the slow time.
He sent a text and remained in his truck as he waited for the rest of his group to show up, excited for the start of another solid season of fun.
Danny Sumner was looking forward to a weekend with the guys and a break from town. Honestly, he needed it - even if the man didnt' entirely want to admit. His jeep was packed up with the essentials he personally needed, plus some beer. Shutting the trunk, he gave his girlfriend, Mina, a hug and kiss goodbye. Even though they were a year and a half in of dating, every time they broke apart, it felt like he had a phantom limb that haunted him, "I'll be back Sunday night. Don't party too hard with Faerie," he joked out the window now as he ignited the engine. Laughter bubbled from Mina, "Oh yeah, we'll have some raging keggers. Have fun though! I'll see you soon. I love you!" Green eyes watched her walk away, back towards the condos as he saw her typing away on her phone.
A frown sat on his lips, eyeing that phone, his foot still on the break. What if- no, stop it. Danny backed up the Jeep and left before he could say anything stupid that would hang over them the weekend while they were apart. This weekend was about relaxing, and hanging out with Aspen and Everett. Not Mina. Not his feelings about her friend. Just bro time and beer on the beach. The man was a little relieved when his best friend had selected a beach path that only he appeared to know about. Danny didn't know how Aspen even discovered some of these off the beaten path places, but thankfully, the park ranger knew him and Everett enough to keep on the lighter side verses believing they were part billy goat like he was.
Forty-five minutes later, he was pulling up along side a familiar truck. Looks like he had managed to beat Everett, since that truck belonged to the one and only Aspen Green. Danny cut the engine and got out and wrapped on the window with his knuckles, grinning, "Hope you weren't waiting on me too long, Aspen." He might have carried on until he heard the sound of another set of tires. Green eyes glanced to see a third rugged vehicle approaching, and Danny just waved, knowing exactly who was in the truck.
The right thing and the easy thing are never the same.
Everett had the truck packed the night before - having to work on a few clients before he met up with Aspen and Danny on the trail. He took a bit longer to wrap up his last client as they wanted to chat afterwards. His mother shooed the man away - he had been coming to the chiropractic clinic ever since the family practice started. The man locked up his room and headed out, but not before his sister double checked he had enough food for the overnight trip.
He tried to wave her off but the sight of her trail mix was something he couldn't resist. The blonde woman tucked it in the outside pocket of her brother's pack and closed the door of the truck. Everett waved goodbye to his family, the engine of the truck coming to life before he drove off. Thirty minutes later, he had made it to the meeting spot - seeing that both Aspen and Danny had beat him. Everett waved back at Danny before he parked his truck close by. He turned the key and got out of the truck, pulling his backpack out of the back seat before locking the truck with his key.
"Hello to you both. I apologize I'm late. One of my regulars decided he wanted to chat after being adjusted. How are the two of you today? Ready to hit the trails?"
Aspen grinned as his two best friends finally arrived. “I’m glad you decided to show up before the tide swallowed the beach,” Aspen teased. Even though Aspen had a full-time job, Danny and Everett had more on their plates for scheduling. Aspen didn’t know if it was the faces he had seen on his friends the past few times he saw them, but he figured it was about time to enjoy nature—Ocean water and shitting in the grass.
“Well, let’s head out before the bugs get too aggressive.” He buckled his pack around his waist and headed to the hidden trailhead. “Let’s not talk about work,” he started. “Let’s start with some good news, yeah? Anything exciting? As long as there aren’t any babies out of wedlock,” Aspen added, with a tease. Knowing full well that it didn’t bother him if that was the case.
Dare he say that Everett almost looked haggard? Green eyes watched the last of their crew get out of the truck now with his backpack. As soon as he joined the group, apologies were abound and it became clear that work was to blame. Danny was no doctor, but he could understand as a listening ear how people loved to cling to your attention. Eyes rolled though as Aspen claimed that he thought the tide might have swallowed the beach whole if they had been a minute later, "You're so dramatic." The man said with a laugh now, shaking his head. It felt good to be with the two of them again, just a guys weekend with no worries.
Per usual, Aspen Green was already herding them along towards the trails with the excitement of a border collie who spotted some loose sheep. He looked to Everett, jokingly making a face before he turned to follow his best friend now. No work talk allowed, sounded typical enough. It's not like he had much to talk about on the subject anyways as a bar tender and a part time game tracker. The idea of good news made him sigh, "No, no babies. Not for me at least, unless Everett's not telling us a few things." He said with a grin now, sidestepping the question completely as green eyes looked over his shoulder towards the caboose of their group.
