Word had spread around school about Helping Hooves and Julia couldn't help but overhear, especially about their therapy program. She was curious and had a chat with Moses about it, feeling odd asking for help. There was still a hesitancy when it came to food and wearing clothes that actually fit her. The situation at home was much better, but she still needed help healing old wounds.
Moses had agreed to take her and ask for a tour and learn more about the program. After visiting Serenity and meeting a few Blue Acres horses, she quickly caught the horse bug that had already gone through Hickstead. She got out of the car and followed beside him. They had called beforehand and were to look for a woman named Sabrina and they decided to start in the main barn. "Hi, we are looking for Sabrina? I'm here for the tour." Thankfully, there was only one person in the barn. The horses seemed to be outside as the stalls she had a peek into were empty. She was hoping she would be able to see one or two while learning about the program.
Julia approached the woman, smiling at her and stopped before she got too close.
While Sabrina wasn’t exactly happy having to give a tour on Sunday, the man was important enough to her parents that they needed her to do it. She didn’t know why she had to be the one to do it. Piper was also fully capable. But nevertheless, Sabrina agreed. Since her parents were quite nervous about this man coming and seeing the property. The teen finally understood why when she did some digging into it. Moses Baker and his sister, Dahlia, both were well-known figures in the community. Both in business and community outreach. A person they for sure needed on their side.
Sabrina made sure she was dressed in a way that was nice, but still in a casual manner. Didn’t want to look like she was trying too hard. As she was preparing to re-wrap some rope, she heard a voice call out to her. Sabrina turned and saw the man she was warned about. Not in a bad way, of course. But his presence was known for sure. Dressed in a sleek casual suit. Not something to really be seeing a horse barn in, but Sabrina couldn’t fault him.
“Yes, that’s me,” she smiled, holding out a hand. Moses returned the handshake, making Sabrina want to practice hers. “Thank you for coming out to Helping Hooves.”
“No, thank you, for allotting some time for us. This is Julia, my daughter. We wanted to learn more about what you offer here.”
“Of course! Where would you like to start the tour, Julia?” Sabrina asked, looking at the young girl – who definitely had a twinkle in her eye.
Julia was happy glancing around the barn - it was much different than Blue Acres. Helping Hooves seemed to have cozier atmosphere - somewhere were people had fun riding rather than being forced to compete. She allowed Moses to introduce himself, deciding to stick close by. "Yes, thank you." Julia knew from Isa that horses needed constant care and Sabrina had taken time out of her busy day for a tour.
"We can start in here, though if possible I'd like to see a horse or two as well." She wanted to explore the whole place, not realizing how big the property was until they had driven down the country road. "How many horses do you have here anyway?" The young girl wished she read more about the barn - though she was too young to have a cellphone or computer of her own.
She was sure Moses would have questions as well - Julia was just itching to start riding. "Do you have your own horses here too? What kind of riding do you do?" There seemed to be different styles of riding - making it more difficult to decide.
Sabrina gave the young girl a soft smile. “Welcome to our barn!” she said, leading them past the threshold. “We have a good selection of horses here, ranging from personal to therapy, as well as rescue horses. We will also start offering coaching here, as well – so a few more horses will be available.” The teen was quite surprised that her parents had suggested bringing coaching, but with the rise in the Special Olympics, a lot more were interested. And what better place than Helping Hooves?
She stopped in front of Hilda. The mare, sensing Sabrina – huffed and walked over. “This is Hilda, one of our therapy horses. She’s a bit larger than most – but is a complete sweetheart.” Knowing her cue, Hilda lowered her head over the gate. Sabrina scooted over a stool, allowing Julia to stand up closer.
“Ah, I mainly jump – but I cross-train a lot when I can! Have you ever ridden a horse before?” Sabrina inquired.
