Raf had only been in town a short time, but he already felt like he knew every corner of it already - from the rough and worrying corners, to the sweet and fluffy light-heartedness of the center. Mostly this was down to his work, as he'd rarely had a spare moment to himself since arriving, and had only just about proclaimed himself settled in. That was partly because he had a thing about organisation and couldn't stand leaving boxes out full of his stuff. The flat, though small, was already in order and he only felt he needed a couple of other bits to complete the homely feel he had going. Today it was the turn for Paramedic Rafael, having put his police uniform aside for today's shift with the hospital. He'd met quite a lot of people through both jobs, and some already from the place he was driving to today, but it was quite unusual to receive this kind of call.
One of the firemen had gotten themselves injured during a training exercise. In these circumstances, they'd normally fix on site or bring them in, but clearly someone was worried enough to feel the need to call outside assistance in to help. He didn't have any knowledge of what the injury was, only that the patient was conscious and breathing, but that their pulse was a little fast; likely pain or fear, depending on what exactly had happened. He pulled up in the car park and hopped out, quick to grab his bag of magic tricks and hurry toward the front doors. "Hi, someone call for a paramedic? What's the problem?" He asked, assessing the area in a quick glance and trying to find the issue.
Mason was laying on the ground slightly out of it but a little pissed off at the same time. He'd been taking part in his shifts weekly training drill when the guy he was partnered with (an on call firefighter who was covering for a member of his team) hadn't set the ladder up properly and as he'd began to climb it fell backwards, sending him straight to the ground and landing on top of him. Thankfully he hadn't climbed too high when the ladder began falling but 30kg of metal coming down on him hadn't been fun. He'd tried to save his head on impact but he may or may not have hit it which would probably explain the wooziness he was currently feeling.
He had been laying on the floor for the past ten minutes - minus the ladder, as the idiot had kindly removed it from him while one of his proper crew mates called for an ambulance even though he protested he didn't need one. He was a paramedic, he could sort himself out. "Hi, someone call for a paramedic? What's the problem?" He heard a voice he didn't recognise call out and he tried to lift his head to see who it was. He was familiar with most of the medics at the hospital but he couldn't recall this one. "yeah, he fell from a ladder which then fell on him from about 8 or 10ft" He repressed a sigh as one of his team spoke to the paramedic. "I'm fine guys. ."
He glanced from the person lying prone on the floor, to the other crew members dotted about - none of them seemed to know quite what to do with themselves, which surprised Raf. Most fire fighters had some basis of first aid, and would generally know what to do with themselves, but these lot seemed uncertain. Either they were new crew, or stand in's that might not have much rapport with each other. Or there was the possibility that this was a serious injury and that was why they were concerned. He couldn't see any pools of blood, which would be an obvious serious injury, nobody was kneeling over the guy and holding onto anything, and as Raf spoke, he saw the guy try to raise his head. So he wasn't knocked out either. These were all good signs though, he would rather have been called out for a sprain or mild concussion than a cut femoral artery or broken spine.
"yeah, he fell from a ladder which then fell on him from about 8 or 10ft" Raf nodded, glancing to the building and then the ladder as mentioned. They kindly hadn't left the ladder laying their either, which surprisingly had happened on occasion when Raf had turned up to stuff. People not removing the danger to the scene. "Alright, was he wearing his helmet?" He asked, as all fire crew should wear when they're up heights - it didn't look like he had his on now so either someone had stupidly removed it, or he'd not been wearing it in the first place. He headed over to the patient. "I'm fine guys. ." Raf gave a warm chuckle and flashed the guy a quick, friendly smile as he knelt down by the wounded, putting his bag down within reach. "I'm Raf, nice to meet you," He introduced himself quickly, always feeling that it helped put people at ease when he did. "Your crew are just concerned, and they're right to be - even from a small height a fall can be a serious injury. Does anything hurt? Can you wiggle your toes and your fingers okay?" He asked, looking him over with a critical eye, checking if anything was obviously broken.
"Alright, was he wearing his helmet?" Mason’s eyes landed on the male who’d made his way through the gathered firefighters. ”No, we were just doing a training exercise and I hadn’t planned on falling today.” He said, his eyes darting to the firefighter who was stood off to the side looking slightly guilty. The guy must have been new or just sloppy at his job. "I'm Raf, nice to meet you,” He gave a stiff smile in response, still annoyed at the fact he was still laying horizontal on the ground. ”Mason. Are you new to the hospital?” He asked. "Your crew are just concerned, and they're right to be - even from a small height a fall can be a serious injury. Does anything hurt? Can you wiggle your toes and your fingers okay?" He supressed a sigh, knowing the guy was right but it still didn’t change the fact he hated being a patient. ”I know. . but they can all get back to work now.” He said, directing it towards the hovering men, his eyes lingering on them until they all moved away. ”I’m fine, just some bruised ribs and a knock to the head, probably a concussion.” He said, wiggling his fingers and toes to show he was fine.
Rafael remained calm and collected as he went through his usual list of triage questions. It was important to know in a quick nutshell of what they were potentially dealing with, and the severity that was likely due to the circumstances. With a helmet on, head injuries were going to be less severe, hopefully, or non existent. You couldn't rule them out entirely but it was useful to know so he could try to fix in the order of worst to best. ”No, we were just doing a training exercise and I hadn’t planned on falling today.” An eyebrow rose slightly, but there was no judgement as he responded with "A helmet is always useful in every circumstance, training should surely also cover the use of a helmet and good practice, no?" okay so it was a little bit like a friendly warning but so many accidents and injuries could be more easily avoided if people didn't skip corners or the like. Still, he wasn't here to berate, he was here to help.
”Mason. Are you new to the hospital?” Rage have a small nod, already assessing the man for issues. "Yep. Frequent visitor are you?" He asked, using the moment to check Mason's eyesight. ”I know. . but they can all get back to work now.” Rafe have an understanding smile and heard the scuffle as they left. That wasn't his priority though, his patient was. ”I’m fine, just some bruised ribs and a knock to the head, probably a concussion.” Rafe nodded again, seeing the wiggles and half smiling. "Oh I'm sure, but just as you gotta do your job properly and put out all the fires, I gotta do mine too." He finished his checks on the ground then sat back on his heels. "But you're good to sit up if you feel up to it. I'm seeing mild concussion but morning dramatic. Just want to double check." because the last thing he needed was the guy to stand up too fast and drop down from something hidden, or then cause himself a worse issue by falling.
