Even years on, as time passed and they experienced the usual hardships of a good marriage and life, they never faltered or strayed, never went to bed angry with each other. It gave Rafe the idea that he wanted a love like that when he grew older, and that it was out there for everyone if you looked hard enough. He grew up fast alongside his older brother, and despite their occasional squabbles as all siblings had, the pair were close and Raf looked up to Enzo, as much as Enzo looked out for his younger sibling. Enzo was the one that helped Raf with is homework, who taught him how to kick a football, who showed him how to punch. His father was around at times but he worked long hours, and a lot of the child's entertainment was up to themselves. Rafe doted on his mother, she usually worked from home with her designs, and when his brother was not around to annoy, and he wasn't at school, he would sit with her and watch her draw or sculpt or sew - for hours. He found it fascinating, marveling at her talent for art. His artistic skill was little to none, stick figures at best, but he could appreciate the things he was not good at that others were. The family was mostly content for a long time, but unfortunately the happiness could not last forever. It took time for them to see it - the change in Raf's mother. She was a strong woman, independent despite her marriage, and she hid the symptoms from her family until she could do it no longer. Raf will never forget the day he saw her unable to pick up a pencil to draw anymore, unable to thread a needle to sew the pattern she had worked so hard on to design. He used to help her when he could, in the early days - thread the needle with his dexterous fingers, help her hand to grip the pencil. But as his talent lacked, he couldn't do the things she could do, and she began to give up. His father should have seen it sooner, and perhaps he did but denial was strong - the mid teenage years of Rafe's life was spent in and out of hospital visits with his mother, not wanting her to go to her appointments without all the support he could give - Parkingson's and her failing sight was the outcome. She would no longer work let alone design. The family reached a tipping point. With only one income to support the household, Raf's father upped his shifts, but even that made the bills had to cover, and with Rafe in full time education, it was his brother who tried to help cover costs by picking up a part time job. Tensions rose, Raf - not obliged but feeling for his mother - took over much of her care outside of school. In the end, struggling to make things meet, they downsized, losing the house. They did not move outside the city but towards another area; the rooms were a little damp, the garden non existent. Rafe didn't care for the house, so long as he still had the people inside of it, but even that took on a taint. A change in schools and environment, Rafe met a guy who would bring something out in him he never expected. He had dabbled with girls before, but always felt something was missing - and when his friend kissed him during an evening study session he found that spark he'd been missing all along. At first he freaked out, sexuality was not something his family had spoken of, but he knew his father's views on the matter well enough. It took him a couple of months to work his head around how he really felt, and whether he was or wasn't really gay. Several kisses later with the same friend and then a couple of guys cemented things for him, and at 17 he sat his family down to come out to them. He felt sick, saying the words and waiting for a reaction. As he'd expected, his father looked at him long and hard, and then got up and walked away without a work. His mother was softer, patted his hand, gave him a smile, but didn't say a word. His brother embraced him, said it was okay and that it didn't matter. His brother loved him no matter what, and that nothing was wrong with who he was. If not for his brother in that moment, Raf had no idea where he would have ended up. Further tragedy hit the family not much after Rafe's 18th birthday. The family had fragmented a little following Raf's announcement. His father, not unkind, rarely acknowledged him, his mother refused to speak about the issue and acted as if it had never happened. Rafe stewed on it but refused to return back to the closet, instead he put his love life on hold and worked on his studies. It was late one night when he received a call from the hospital to let him know that his brother, unknown to him as a user, was admitted with a suspected overdose. Heartbroken and terrified, Raf barely left his side for weeks. This was his brother, his best friend, and he'd had no idea what was going on with him. Once he was out, they spent a long time talking, a lot of promises were made. His brother had felt pressured, with everything going on at home, and Rafe told him it was time for Enzo to lean on him for a change. Raf changed his career path in life, having originally wanted to follow in his father's steps as a Doctor, or if not to help research into new medicines, he switched tactics and became a police officer. He wanted to be able to help people like his brother. His father and him came to a head when he told his parents, but despite the argumentative blows, he stayed firm on his belief and years of hard work down the line, picked up as a paramedic part time. It killed him to do it, but when his mother's condition worsened, he managed to persuade his father to find her a home, moving to England now that she was no longer tying him to the family home and sending back money in order to help pay for her expenses so she could live in comfort. He tries to keep as eye on his brother as much as he can but worries for him daily that he will relapse. the role player alias • King of the rock age • the length of a piece of string other characters • 3.14 |
