It had been a few months of texting and spending time with Emilie. He was enjoying her company and hoping she did as well. After figuring out their schedules, he sent her a text asking her to go to a movie with him. The summer weather was making it too hot to do something outside. When she had agreed, he was excited - wanting to ask her something important in person.
When the day came, he spent it teaching lessons at the barn and got a ride in on Dawn. The mare was happy to go on a trail ride. Once he got home, he showered and changed - deciding to dress up a bit. He ironed his linen shirt and headed out on his motorcycle - heading towards the movie theatre. It was about twenty minutes until he got there, parking and locking his bike before heading inside.
He checked his watch, waiting outside for her - thinking it would be rude to wait inside. It wasn't long before he heard footsteps approaching him, hoping it was who he was waiting for.
Emilie had gotten an invitation to join Tobias at the theater today and she had gladly agreed. She was nervous at this point now. She wasn't sure entirely how this would all go, but she was hoping that it'd go smoothly.
She has spent some time at the barn this morning, but since it was summer, and too warm to ride the horses for too long, she just mucked out some stalls and ended up heading back home to shower and prepare for the movies.
She had gone through her outfits for around an hour or so, but ended up on selecting a cute little black dress, but then because of the weather she had wanted to ride her bike, so she put her motorcycle protection pants on, as well as her jacket and helmet. She had her saddlebags on her bike to put some of her stuff in, and she was thankful that she had lockable ones.
She made her way there, and parked before removing her jacket and tying it around her waist and then shimmying her pants down. She made sure that nothing moved out of place, before folding them neatly, and putting them into her bag. She grabbed her jacket from around her waist prior to folding it around her arm and holding it in front of her. She wasn't sure if it would be cold inside the theater, as sometimes they turned up the air conditioning a lot, so she opted instead to keep it with her.
She smiled at him as she noticed that he had waited for her and moved up to him. "Hello" she said simply.
It wasn't a long wait. Shortly after he arrived, he noticed Emilie approach him. "Hi, you look amazing by the way." He gave her a smile after he noticed the dress. It wasn't something he usually saw her in. Granted, until tonight they only saw each other at the barn. "Hope you have room for popcorn and a drink?" Tobi opened the door in the theater, letting Emilie go inside first.
"How was your day at work?" He asked, leading the way towards the line where they could buy tickets for their movie. Tobias had his wallet in the back pocket of his shorts, fully prepared to pay for both of them. He made sure Emilie was beside him while they waited in line. It seemed everyone had the same idea going to the movies as the line was pretty long. He took the time to glance at what movies were playing currently.
There seemed to be a mix of newer and older movies. "How do you feel about seeing something a bit older?" None of the new movies were anything interesting for him, but he really would see anything.
Emilie smiled when he said that she looked amazing. "Not looking too bad yourself" she said with a laugh before nodding to the popcorn and a drink. "As long as we can get candy as well, this is one of the only places I normally allow myself a little bit of candy." she said with a smile. It had always been a tradition when they went to the movies for her to get some candy, simply because it kept her a little more at ease if she was able to snack on something other than popcorn.
She sighed when he mentioned work. "One of the stable hands called off, and they added a fifth horse to my riding docket today, as well as stalls to muck from them calling off. Let's just say I'm glad that todays work day is over" she said while looking up at the sign to see what was playing, there were a few that she knew were older, but had never seen, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to see a new movie.
"That sounds good!" she said before they made their way to the counter. As he chose the movie, she looked at the person handling the cash register and bit her lip. "Um any chance you guys have a closed captioning device?" she said simply. She normally hated asking, and she hadn't been to a movie here yet, but back in London when Blake would take her, or they'd do a family night out, they'd generally ask for her.
"Thanks. I really should have done something with my hair though. Did you have someone at the barn do your hair?" When they usually saw each other, he tended to notice her hair was down. Granted, at the barn people either tended to have their hair down or up - depending if they had a helmet on or not. "Of course, what kind of candy do you like? I'll eat pretty much anything." He would never say no to anything sweet - it wasn't anything he could burn off at the barn or working out at the gym.
Tobias moved along in the line as Emilie spoke, shaking his head when she mentioned someone had called in sick. "I swear someone is always sick there. Or do you think they were faking it to get out of work? You can always text and say you needed to come later." He knew from his sisters that it took awhile for women to get ready for a date - but some women could take twenty minutes and they were ready to head out the door. "Now it's time for you to relax and enjoy the movie, no more work until... tomorrow, right?" He had lessons to teach in the morning and was scheduled for the graveyard shift at the police station.
"Two tickets for Indiana Jones, please." He pulled out his wallet once they got to the start of the line, using his debit card to pay for both of their tickets. The person behind the counter nodded and pressed the buttons on the register. "Yes, just one moment please and I'll get one set up for you." Tobias felt dumb he didn't arrange it beforehand - it wasn't something he was used to. "Are you used to having one for movies or did you check if they had one?" He usually had his turned off when he watched TV. After paying for their tickets, he slid his wallet back into the pocket of his shorts.
Emilie smiled and shook her head. "No I ended up doing it after grabbing a shower at the barn. I just got out of work, otherwise I wouldn't have brought the bike, I'm sure it messed up my hair in the helmet, and fitting a safe riding outfit over this outfit isn't the easiest thing." she said with a laugh. She bit her lip and thought a bit. "Hmmm not sure I could choose just one. Maltesers and JellyBabies are some of my favorites, but not sure any chocolate would be bad" she said as she looked over at him and smiled.
"I'm not sure" she said while wrinkling her nose. "I made it on time! So I didn't need to let you know that we'd have to move it later, but if need be, I'll text and let you know what's going on if need be." she said with a smile. She was sure that he'd understand, but at the same time, she wasn't going to spend all day and night at the barn because someone else didn't want to work today. She nodded and smiled "I at least have a mid-day shift tomorrow, so no early morning for me. Hopefully someone doesn't call in and they attempt to get me in early."
Emilie bit her lip again at the nervousness of asking for the closed caption device, and nodded at his question. "All places are supposed to have some accommodation of some sort, normally I just watch movies at home with subtitles, but if I went to the movies with family, they always grabbed it for me" she said with a shrug. She took the device when the woman handed it to her, and with a simple thanks, she quickly turned it on, to verify that the batteries were working, before turning it back off and putting it into her bag for the time being. She wouldn't need it until the movie started, and she didn't want to drop it between now and then. She moved towards the counter for candy and looked towards all the snack.
"Do you want anything?" she asked before it was their turn to order at the counter, that way she wouldn't have to try to juggle reading two people's lips at the same time.
Tobias smiled softly at her again. "Wait, shower at the barn? Do they have one that I don't know about?" It would have been something that could prove useful - especially making it faster after work. Smelling like a dead body at the barn was something he didn't really want. "Your hair looks great. Though of course I'd rather you wear a helmet and be safe then have good looking hair." Safety on the bike wasn't something to joke about and Tobias was someone who cared about Emilie. "Hazelnut chocolate okay?" He reached for the purple foil covered chocolate bar and would add it to their pile of snacks once they got to the front of the line.
"Just making sure I didn't rush you or anything." With having sisters, he knew it wasn't easy getting ready. Makeup and doing hair wasn't exactly something he knew about. "I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Thankfully I also have the afternoon shift at the Crime Lab tomorrow." He had worked the graveyard shift the night before - it was exhausting and there was no amount of caffeine that could get him through it all. "That's good to know. Did your parents have to learn sign language then?" Tobias was really considering taking lessons - even if he and Emilie just remained friends.
As they approached the concession, he pulled out his wallet. "Yeah, popcorn and gummy bears sound okay?" He waited for the employee to approach them before he started ordering.
Emilie smiled and winked. ""If you're creative, there's plenty of ways to do things that others don't think about" she couldn't help but smirk afterwards. Sure sometimes blocking off a bathing stall area, and taking a quick shower, albeit with cold water, was something she had done before, she was sure that people at Seven Oaks generally didn't. "If it's one thing my brother taught me, it's safety gear is a must, and cannot be skimped on" she said with a smile. She nodded when he asked about the chocolate before moving forward in the line and making sure that she didn't run into the person in front of her.
"I don't think I could be rushed to doing anything, or even feeling rushed. I'd have reached out if it would have caused any issues. " she shrugged a little, it wasn't a big thing for her to have to reach out via text to people. She loved the ability that texting gave her, she could easily reach out to people, without waiting for their response and just get it across, meanwhile phone calls she always struggled with. Sometimes she'd just avoid calls so that people would text her, as most times they'd forget that she can't hear them. "I couldn't imagine having to work multiple different shifts in a row. Afternoon shifts to morning shifts are bad enough, but I feel like you know that pain more than me" she said with a laugh. She looked away for a second to move up in line again before returning her attention to him. "Uh, well my parents just learned the basics, and anything needed that I regularly used, otherwise they would finger spell anything they didn't know the sign for. My brother on the other hand, went completely overboard and learned everything possible, and we also made up our own little signs at times to get around our parents knowing what they meant. It's really easy to use sign language to communicate across a room, or in code, whereas talking will always give someone away" she said with a smile.
She nodded at the popcorn and the gummy bears. "Can I also get a water?" she said simply, hoping that he'd do the ordering as sometimes it gets overwhelming when it comes to ordering if they asked more questions and she sometimes tended to get lost in the conversation.
“Please don’t tell me you used the wash rack the horses use. I don’t need to think that your coworkers or the other boarders saw you naked.” Tobias chuckled, he knew Seven Oaks well enough now - practically living there if he wasn’t working at the police station. He gave her a nod as he began to place their order. “I don’t think I need to tell you how dangerous it is without it. Or are you annoyed that your brother is a bit paranoid about it?” He knew all about being overprotective of younger siblings as he was one of the oldest in his family.
It was something new he was learning how to deal with. People tended to have different preferences when it came to communication. “I figured that. Though I never know how long you needed to get ready or anything.” He knew from having sisters that women took either forever to get ready or they could be ready in ten minutes. Tobi supposed it was dependent on their personality. “It’s really not that bad. Both jobs are forgiving about my schedule. I tend to plan my lessons around when I work at the police station. It tends to work out for most of my students anyway.” Though sometimes he would have two late nights in a row, but it wasn’t anything he couldn’t handle. As he listened to her talk again, he shuffled forward as more people moved up in line. “That’s interesting. I would have thought your parents would have gone overboard about it. Were they protective of you too?” He wasn’t a parent himself but his own parents tended to let their kids be free and do their own thing, though none of them were born with any illnesses that were something that would live with them forever.
Their order was filled quickly and Tobias was able to order them both a water. He was debating getting an alcoholic drink, but he knew better than to drink knowing he was driving himself home. Once everything was placed on the counter, Tobias pulled out his debit card and paid for their order before putting the card back in the back pocket of his pants. “Well, shall we go watch this movie then?” He picked up both bottles of water, waiting for Emilie to grab the gummy bears and popcorn.
