"What did that accomplish? It's not a woman, you can't spank it into action." He looked at her again, raising a brow. "Spank? Really." He shook his head at her choice of words before moving around to the boot of the car and opening it with the push of a button. "Don't happen to have a torch in there or anything?" He grabbed the first aid kit and looked around in his emergency kit for a torch. "Yeah, got one." He said, fishing it out. "It may as well be a roof as it's useless as a car right now." He closed the boot and moved back to the side of the car to hand the blonde the torch. "True..back inside then." He agreed, getting back in. He rested the first aid kit on the arm rest and rummaged inside for a bandage. "Here. . might help your wrist."
"I think I can work with that, Brook." He smiled again. ”good.” He didn’t care for formalities with other detectives, unless he didn’t get along with them, but he liked Diana. "Glad you see its good to take care of your mental health like that. I knew people back in London who had a hard time with it." He nodded. ”Yeah I used to have a hard time with it myself back in London myself.” There was something about the smaller town that made him want to enjoy his free time, rather than throw himself into work all the time. "Same. At least, getting it in before work. I like grabbing my lunch from here, Is he fine with strangers petting him?" He glanced down at the dog sat by his side and smiled. ”Yeah go for it.” He said, running a hand over the shepherd’s head. "Besides prepping for work, you got anything else going on this weekend or with the holidays coming up?" He shook his head. ”No, I’ll probably just be grabbing a beer with friends. . are you up to much?” He asked.
His lips curved into one of his rare smiles when the woman laughed. "Deputy Chief doesn't roll off the tongue as well." She had a point. He hardly went by the title the town had decided to give their head officers, mostly going by detective sergeant when introducing himself to members of the public/officers in the city. ”True. . how about you just stick to Brook. . or DS Tyson when on duty.” He said, his smile slipping into a slight grin. "Ah well, I suppose you're right about having days off. Even bosses need a break," There had been a time in his career when he’d hardly had time off. He had been eager to climb the ladder as quick as he could and had only recently allowed himself the luxury of down days.
It had been easy to exclusively focus on his job in the past when he had no family or a girlfriend that had stuck around long enough. His priorities hadn’t changed drastically in the past year but taking on a puppy had allowed him to enjoy days off rather than try to put in for over time. ”That they do.” He agreed. "Are you and Zeus just out for a walk or did you have a mission out here for groceries like I do?" He nodded and gestured to the bag in his hand. ”Both. . walking Zeus while getting supplies in for the week.” Might as well kill two birds with one stone.
Brooke browsed the different market stalls as he walked along the first row, only pausing when he eventually reached his usual veg vender. He greeted the man with a nod before selecting a variety of fresh vegetables that would last him for the rest of the week. After paying, he took the bag from the man and continued his way through the market, stopping briefly to grab a coffee from another stall. As he rounded the corner to the next row of stalls, he took note of how busy the market had become and pulled the black leash from around his shoulders, leaning down to clip it onto Zeus’s collar; ensuring the dog wouldn’t get in people’s way as they passed by. He wasn’t in the mood for a Karen complaining about an off leash dog, not that they’d have a leg to stand on. Zues’s recall was outstanding with being an ex-police dog and retirement hadn’t changed that. "Chief! Funny to see you here on a thursday morning and not at work," His eyes found the source of the voice as he straightened up. ”Deputy Chief, and I do have days off Diana. . Occasionally.” He said, smiling slightly.
"Oh please do, Bambi is a terrifying film and I don't need to relive it." He snorted and side eyed her, somewhat amused by her sarcasm. Bambi may have had a dark turn at one point but it was far from terrifying. "Nope. It's fucked." He sighed and hit his hand on the car door in annoyance. ”Fuck sake.” He muttered, pissed at himself for deciding to drive his unmarked bmw instead of taking Blaise in one of the station patrol cars. Hopefully the garage in town could work their magic and have it fixed sooner rather than later. He glanced up at the sky, wondering if the rain would eventually let up but the clouds were still black which didn’t look promising. "We need to find somewhere to wait out the night, no point trying to walk in the dark and this weather is going to get worse." He nodded, catching the time on his phone as he slipped it back into his pocket. ”Wait in the car or try and find somewhere?” He asked. The car at least was off the road so they wouldn’t be at risk of anyone crashing into them but anybody passing by probably wouldn’t be able to see them in the dark.
Brook walked through the high street on his way to the weekly farmer’s market. It had been a few weeks since he had last managed to get there due to work but he finally had a Thursday free and he was looking forward to picking up some fresh fruit and veg and seeing what the butcher’s had to offer. The produce from the supermarket had sufficed but nothing compared to what the market had to offer; fresh, local produce. He enjoyed being able to give back to the local farmers and liked the fact he could walk to it from his house.
His german shepherd trotted happily at his side - probably appreciating the walk without his younger more boisterous brother. Brook had opted to leave the pup at home with Blaise – still not a sentence he was used to saying – since he needed at least one hand free to carry things back. He trusted Zeus to walk freely whilst Spike was still learning. Reaching the market, he began walking the isles, searching for what he needed for the week ahead.
"Life gets in the way, it's fine. It's a pleasure to meet you sir, I'm Shannon." Brook filed the name away in his brain, making an effort to keep it memorised for the next time he would meet the new officer. His eyes moved to the black shepherd that was currently sniffing around his boss’s feet and a smile pulled the corner of his lips upwards. Damn did he miss his dog unit days. , "A pleasure sir. Oh, and this is Tobi. Couldn't bring Captain along with me - much too big to fit in the building, Of course, lead the way."His attention turned back to Shannon as his outstretched hand was accepted. ”Welcome to the team Shannon. .Hey Tobi” He greeted, unable to resist reaching down to give the dog a quick scratch behind the ear before they headed into the office. "well we'll just have to meet him another day." He had no idea who Captain was but he figured it was a horse given the size of the animal being mentioned. Brook moved with his coffee to one of the empty seats on the other side of Nik’s desk and sat down, taking a much needed sip. ”So where are you transferring from Shannon?” He asked curious to get to know his new colleague.
He almost missed the smile on her face it was that small, but he had caught it, just about. . or maybe it was his head playing tricks on him. "You really think I'm going to do a runner right now?" He didn't actually. "No. I don't." He for some stupid reason, trusted her. The head wound was definitely getting to him. "I'm resourceful, but not that resourceful. Besides, I figure if something comes to eat us, it'll want you first as there's more meat on your bones." It was his turn to smile sarcastically but only briefly. Right of course. . don't worry, if a big bad deer comes out of the woods, I'll scare it off." He let her use his hand as leverage to get out of the car before leaning against the door frame while she inspected the damage, his eyes closing for a few seconds as the pain pulsed behind them. "Do you think you could try and help pop it? There might be less damage than we think..." His eyes snapped open at the sound of her voice and he pushed of the car to move to the bonnet. "Actually, there's no point..." He caught sight of her face as she looked underneath the car and let out a sigh himself. "We're not driving anywhere in this thing are we?" He asked, pulling out his phone to try for a signal again.
"Liar," Even with the pounding headache and the sharp pain in his ribs, he managed to get out a snort. "Likewise." He muttered, nodding to her wrist. "Either the battery died or the crash killed it." He pursed his lips with a frown, biting back the urge to swear. Where were the good brick phones when you needed them. You could throw them off a cliff and they would still somehow manage to survive whereas phones of today, all you had to do was hold it wrong and it found a way to break itself. He picked up the police radio and held down the side button as he spoke into it, his eyebrows furrowing further when nothing happened. "fuck sake" He grumbled as he noticed the cord had snapped. "You're not fine, how bad is it?" He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself and simultaneously ignore the fuzziness in his brain.
"I'm fine, it's just a knock." Most likely a concussion. "It's just a break, it doesn't matter." He half smirked, picking up on the stubborn trait they both shared. "You'll have to let me out of the back." He looked at her, taking a brief second to debate it before reaching for the handle and opening his door. Yes, she could run but he didn't think she would be stupid enough to be out alone in a storm and he hoped she wouldn't want to leave him for dead. Brook pushed the door open and stepped out of the car, pausing for a moment to catch his breath as shooting pains ran through his left side. Gritting his teeth, he turned his body towards the car and wrapped his hand around the back door handle to pull it open. He stepped aside to give her room to get out, only offering her a hand to grab if she needed it.
He felt something hit the back of his chair as the car smacked into the tree, flinging him into the steering wheel with a grunt. "Yeah I'm okay," He heard Blaise and gave a slight nod of his head. "good. ." He unclipped his own belt then put a hand to his head as it began to throb, a slight frown appearing on his face when he felt something wet on his fingers. "Are you alright?" He kept his fingers pressed against the gash on his head to try and stop the bleeding. "Yeah i'm fine." He wasn't but she didn't need to know that. He pulled out his phone from his pocket, his frown deepening when he saw there was no signal. Either the wind had knocked out a tower or they were in a dodgy service area. He turned slightly to face her as she leant forward in the chair. "Has your phone got any signal?" He asked looking at her, catching sight of the arm clutched to her chest. "You're not fine, how bad is it?"
Brooke pulled his car into the station car park and into his designated spot, killing the engine by pulling out the keys. He was just coming off a night shift that had been uneventful until half an hour before it was ending. Someone had rang the station to report a stabbing but it turned out to be a false alarm. A bunch of of teenagers messing about after a night of drinking had made the call after a couple of them got into a fight. One had bust the others nose which was the cause of all the blood. Idiots. Stifling a yawn, he got out of his car and headed into the station.
He filled in and filed away the necessary paperwork for the call out then headed into the kitchen to make himself a coffee for the ride home before he clocked out. On his way past, he noticed a guy in uniform with a k9 at his feet. He racked his tired brain for a moment until he remembered nik mentioning something about a new hire in the dog unit. As he came out of the kitchen with his coffee, he saw Nik making his way over to the guy on the chair. "are you waiting on me? i'm nik. station chief." Brooke moved over as the introductions were being made and offered a friendly smile to the guy. "I'm Brook, deputy chief." He said, offering his hand as well.
