"Ah, glad to hear my front is working thing if it's got you convinced." The corner of Elle's mouth turned up conspiratorially as she glanced at him. "Mmmm, yes it's doing something alright." She chuckled quietly, resting a hip against the car again for a moment and stretching out her back carefully.
She blinked, not having expected him to continue her line of conversation about words. "What word would you use then?" Elle pressed her lips together in thought - the comment had been a bit of a throw away joke, but now she owed the poor guy an answer. Having been threatened plenty of times in her life, she didn't see an ounce of that in Kasey, and whilst she knew he was also joking, she thought of him too highly to put him on the same line as those who had threatened her in her life. "I guess, intimidating?" She tilted her head slightly then shook it, "I don't know, maybe that's not the one either." She chewed her lower lip and then brightened suddenly, "formidable! I'd say that's it." She grinned, hoping she hadn't now offended him.
"You're right. I'll be a worried parent til the day I die whether they want me or not. I didn't have too many issues with her bringing boys home from Secondary...I figured Uni might be the same case. I just...sometimes I hate having a daughter, mainly because I was a young stupid boy at one point too and I know what goes through the mind of one when he sees a pretty girl." Elle gave him a sympathetic smile, "and I bet you remember all those smart pretty girls that knocked you back too for being a stupid boy," trying to encourage him to worry just a little bit less about whether Tally had her head screwed on straight. "Or maybe Tally likes girls - I don't know. I've been skirting around 'the talk'." Elle laughed gently, not unkindly, and turned to half sit against the car for a moment as they talked. "I think you're probably several years too late for 'the talk' my friend" She warned, "she's got friends, I imagine? They'll have already gone into details you don't want to know about," Girls loved to talk, after all, and rarely a stone would be left unturned. "If she likes girls, she likes girls, I'm sure she'll feel comfortable enough to tell you if that's the way she prefers."
Elle had never ridden a horse race before. She'd thought about a jockey license a long time ago, but then her life had turned upside down and everything changed. She'd spent years riding horses on the track, just for their exercise circuits, and had loved it - the feeling of excitement the racehorses gave, the speed that they could reach, the power beneath her as they strode out, and their characters and how they didn't deserve the bad rep they often got for being racers. She hadn't done it for a few years, instead she'd been working for the Whites with mostly hacking and some schooling, and it had been good work -she enjoyed it - but there was something about a thoroughbred...
This opportunity had come about randomly; one of the liveries had been the horse race and asked Elle directly if she'd consider being jockey. The horse was one she rode regularly, so she knew him well, but she'd never let him out full stride on a hack - the owner was working on eventing with him, and therefore schooling had been about settling him into his paces and bringing on more flexibility and muscle. She had taken him for a quick go out on one of the field hacks recently so she had a feel for him out in the open like that, and she felt ready to take on the competition. She'd promised the horses' owner she'd try her best but not to get too excited. She had walked the big dark bay around the paddock herself, though she'd had a groom offer, she wanted to warm up with the horse and check he was looking good and ready to go.
She accepted the leg up when it was time, putting her feet in the tiny irons and gathering her reins. The big gelding snorted and picked up a light jog - but he was harmless. Riverside Riptide hadn't been in racing for years, but he still knew the vibe and the sounds of the crowd; he was just particularly well mannered about it. Elle patted his glossy thick neck and headed down to the start at a steady pace, keeping him collected in the canter as she got settled in the racing saddle and gave him time to warm up and get comfortable. He played with the snaffle and leant into her hands a little, but stayed soft enough - all the schooling sessions had done wonders on him, and Elle hoped this wouldn't set the lad back too much.
She lined up with everyone at the start, her nerves turning in her stomach, but she pushed them aside and worked on staying focused and keeping calm, not wanting to give Ripper the wrong feelings through the contact. Once they were loaded in, she gave him a quick pat, but tried not to relax too much as the others joined her on either side. As the call came, she bridged her reins and sat forward in the saddle until three.. two... one... bang - they were off. Ripper still knew what to do when the gates opened and he leapt forward, ears pricked for a moment until they went back against his head, streamlined. He opened up his stride and raced for the front, until Elle gave him a squeeze to bring him back.
He wouldn't have the stamina to get out in front and strike off, he needed to settle back in the pack and let the others run themselves tired. He was a large horse - over 17hands - and he had a longer stride for it - but he also had more to lumber round the track, and he wasn't racing fit. He was polite enough to come back to her, though he was strong in her hands, and he changed his lead to match the turn of the track. She saw a couple of horses come past her on the outside but she let them go - they didn't need to chase. "Easy mate, we'll get them," she murmured as she felt Ripper itch to respond. The pace remained steady, and Elle stuck to her guns, needing to urge the gelding on a little as they headed for the final turn - he'd switched off just a tad, and he was clearly feeling a little tired as the adrenaline began to wane. She clucked and kissed at him, waggling the whip at his shoulder to let him know that it was time to dig deep and hit that final gear.
They turned onto the straight, and Ripper responded. The sweat of horses close around him, the road of the crowd, the encouragement of his rider helped him find his stride and that last little burst of speed. At least two horses out in front pulled away, but Elle didn't care - she didn't quite riding all the way to the finish as Ripper tried his big old heart out and gave it his all. As soon as they crossed the line, she sat up and eased up, whoa-ing to the gelding as he puffed and blew. She let the reins slip through her fingers so he could stretch his neck and catch his breath, slowing to a trot and then a walk as they headed to the exit to walk off and cool the gelding down.
She heard the grunt and hid a smile, unable to help but see Kasey as the gruff work father for the lot of them - even if Dodger wasn't particularly young himself. He was young enough, still almost half Kasey's age, as far as Elle knew - and Dei was even younger. Both boys were very self sufficient and independent lads who tended to keep to themselves, she oculdn't see anyone telling them what to do without getting a hard word for a reply. "Then they'd know I'd care, and I don't think I want to let that one." Elle laughed softly and gave him a look, "You care?" She joked, teasing a little. "I had no idea." A lie obviously, Kasey couldn't hide the fact he cared, it was in his gaze even if he didn't say a word. "Besides, I'm more threating as a boss rather than a parental figure. What do you think?" Elle pretended to think about it for a moment and then shrugged. "Threatening is a very strong word... are you sure you don't mean something else?"
Elle smiled when he laughed, pleased to have drawn the amusement out of him. "No, I suppose I'm not." Though she couldn't speak for herself, not yet anyway... but she knew a lot of parents were relieved to know that they had the same concerns as others. She put down the rag in her hands again and went to close the hood of the car she was working on. Confident it didn't need anymore tinkering for now. "I like to think I taught her right. Just don't think the worry will ever leave me...I still worry about Rex too, but in a different way." Elle watched him quietly for a moment, as she liked to watch people when they didn't realise anyone was looking - they always let a little part of themselves out, and Kasey's care as a father was shining. "I think you always worry unfortunately," She admitted. "And since I'm American, I usually tell Tally to bring her boys home so I can discretely threaten them. I have friends back home who liked to sit around cleaning their shotguns whenever the prom dates came over." Elle let out a little laugh at that, "and how's that gone for you so far?" She could imagine Kasey's daughter to have a fiery spirit as like her dad, and finding out that said father had been threatening the men she brought home would surely lead to a heated debate.
She watched him hold up his hands in defence and she bit back a sigh - now she'd done it, she'd caused drama and made it into a whole thing. "I'll leave you alone. But if someone's bothering you, you let me know." She nodded, grateful that Kasey was the respectable kind of guy to understand when no really meant no, even if it was just implied, rather than to keep pushing. She knew people meant well, when they pushed, just wanting to 'help' but all it did was make things harder for her. She knew well enough what happened when other people got involved in her life and she needed this to remain her business only.
She pushed it all to the back of her mind, best to move on and ignore the awkward moment from a second ago. "I can handle them, I just assume they'll annoy me at some point or another." Elle gave a small chuckle and raised a brow as she straightened up again, stretching out her aching lower back. "I'm pretty sure that's a given, but you can just embody your parental side to kick them into line, no?" She joked, chuckling at the image of Kasey putting Dei in the naughty corner, or Dodger having a time out until he apologises. She couldn't see it going that far, but it was amusing to think about all the same.
"Yeah." Elle's smiled softened at that, feeling sympathy toward the man despite not knowing how it felt just yet to have to watch your kid grow up and move away from you. "You and probably ever other parent ever," She reassured him softly. "You're not alone there." Because it usually made people feel better to know that. "I suppose. I didn't go to University, but I know what dumb teenage boys are like and it worries me. Guess that's what every dad says though. Didn't worry about Rex leaving the house, but Tally, well, it feels like a whole other ball game." She stayed quiet for a moment, letting Kasey talk. "Think I'm being dramatic?" Elle leant her hip against the car she was working on. "I guess it comes down to whether you trust her, and whether you feel you brought her up well enough to be smart about boys and the trouble they bring." She wouldn't lie to him and say it'd be fine. She thought she would have been fine, her parents too, and she'd been the stupid teenager who'd fallen into the wrong relationship. It was too easy to say it was fine and it be a lie, but if Kasey had taught his daughter how to recognise the signs of trouble, how to stay away from it - if she had a smarter head on her shoulders than Elle had, then she'd come out unscathed.
She kept ruffling the dogs ears, finding an itchy spot Dog seemed to particularly enjoy and honing in on it. Her attention may have seemed solely on the animal but she was hyper aware of Kasey and what he was doing. A glance up at him so he didn't think she was completely ignoring him - that would be rude - to see the look on his face. A very disbelieving look. She felt a rush of something that felt like an odd mix of guilt and worry, that maybe be was going to push a little too hard. There was no reason not to take extra work, bills needed paying and she liked the work. "I'm sure Heidi appreciates it." She gave a small nod and returned her attention to the dog. "She sure does." Elle agreed, trying not to stray down the path of this query too much.
She heard the sigh and an eyebrow raised slightly, not wanting to ask but knowing she probably wasn't going to need to either. "Elle. I have two kids, one of which is still a teenager. You should work on your delievery of 'fine'." Elle was not a hard person, didn't have a stubborn bone in her body, but she also couldn't just come out with what was going on. That was iron clad behind a steel bloody vault. "With two kids, one of which is a teenager, you should well know when to leave things alone and let a woman have her privacy. Her reasons are her own and don't need to be pried out unwillingly." A little firmer than she intended, but her tone was soft, careful. She wasn't trying to offend only to warn that she wasn't going to start spilling everything in her head.
"Truth be told, I'm dreading Heidi going on maternity leave. Like, happy for her and Jason and all, but I don't want to wrangle Dei or Dodger." Elle gave a small chuckle at that, patting Dog once again before reaching for her necessary tools. "You don't think you're big, bad and mean enough to handle those two puppies?" She would have thought he could handle the two males given that he had kids and all. She'd worked more with Dodger than Dei, given that the latter was also part time. Both seemed fine but she couldn't help but keep to herself when on shift with them. Luckily, Dei seemed to prefer it that way, and Dodger didn't give the impression he minded either. "My daughter also...she told me she wants to live on campus when she starts University in January...I'm...less than thrilled." Elle glanced up at that, hearing the unspoken concern in his words. "And you'd rather she stayed at home?" She guessed, understanding his fear. After all, her leaving home had been where it'd all gone wrong for her. But that was her fault and not the way everyone's world went. "At least she won't be far from home... A little taste of freedom without being a million miles away?"
It took her some time to find a cloth. She hunted around in the tack room, sure she'd left one in a corner the other day for this very purpose (so she didn't waste time looking for one), but alas wherever it had gone, it had clearly gone to some place she couldn't follow. Things did have a habit of vanishing into thin air, often to return once a new one had been purchased. It seemed to be the way of horse worlds. She didn't complain, she kept her things to herself as much as she could to avoid the borrowing - normally done on a harmless basis all the same - and used the yard equipment where possible, always sure to replace things so it wasn't her fault when they couldn't be found next time. She was conscious of not drawing attention to herself or being any trouble at all. She was aware to some people it made her seen odd or even perhaps a little rude, but most of the time she just got labelled as shy and that was fine by her.
Giving up on her tack room hunt, she vowed to keep an eye for a cloth around the yard as she went about finishing her morning. Maybe one would turn up before she was done and she could go back. She had a pretty good memory for stuff like that, having had it drummed into her over the years. With an ex like hers, it only cause pain to forget how everything should be presented at all times. Elle swept the memories aside, her eyes looking down as she turned on her heel, a mistake she soon realised when she bumped straight into someone else on the yard she hadn't known was there. It had been so quiet she hadn't heard anyone else around, wrongly assuming she was the only person still out on the yard. "Oof," The noise escaped her at the collision and she automatically put her hands out to steady herself. "I'm so sorry." Was quick to follow on reflex, the yard was large enough and she still managed to walk right into someone.
Elle smiled as the horse rubbed it's forehead against her arm, and she chuckled before pushing the head away gently - but firmly. She was a bit of a soft touch, that much was true, but it was the reason she was often given the more difficult rides - her quietly commandeering and suggestive nature made it easy to settle the more unruly and sensitive equines. She liked them too, she liked being able to settle the one's people labeled as crazy, she liked being able to feel like she really accomplished something. Scratching Sonic's neck, she gave the bay one last hearty pat and then exited the stable. Even though she was just one of the exercisers and not a stable hand, she didn't like just getting off and throwing the reins at a yard worker. She always untacked, washed down or brushed off her horse and rugged them before she left. It never took very long, so it didn't encroach on her time very much, and it made her feel better. The yard owner was happy for her to do it and still get paid the same, so she didn't mind either.
He was her last ride of the day, so she'd spent a little longer than completely necessary with him, but she had clocked off the moment her feet at hit the ground, so she didn't care. She didn't have anything left to fill her day, and the idea of going back to her small and empty flat felt a little low. There wasn't much else for her to do though, unless she wanted to go work on a car at the garage, but she didn't feel in the mood to tinker with a machine. She locked the stable door, double checking to make sure she had, and then picked up the tack to cart if off the to room. The yard was quiet for this time - it was early afternoon and most people had left for lunch time. It was often this time that was a little dead, just before people began to return for evening/afternoon lessons and bring in and feeds. Elle made sure to place the horses' tack back on the correct rack and bridle peg with care, and then began to hunt down a clean cloth so she could give the tack a quick wipe before she covered it.
She gave an inconspicuous rub of her forehead, the part she'd thwacked against the car, but it didn't really hurt. She'd had worse, but it did give her an excuse to have the red mark on her cheek at least; she could blame it on the car. She gave a genuine smile though at the sight of that soppy face, unable to help but feel pleased to see the pup. Not always confident with people, she was great with animals, she found them comforting - for obvious reasons. Her attention remained mostly focused on the dog for a moment, having greeting Kasey so as not to be rude, she liked that Dog gave her an excuse to keep her gaze averted, to keep her relaxed as her hands scratched the animal behind his big floofy ears, chuckling as the animal flopped over her legs, her smile widening without being able to help herself. "You big sop," She murmured, but she enjoyed it all the same.
"I didn't realize you were on schedule to work back here today," His words meant she had to pull her attention away from Dog and concentrated on Kasey - non scary Kasey, she reminded herself. She couldn't help it though, she was always on edge after a fight with Ryan - particularly a bad one. "I took an extra shift," She said quietly, not stopping with her ministrations of cuddles to the animal in her lap. She might not be so scared of him anymore but she couldn't help but feel a little wary - particularly when she was in a tense mood. In her defense she hadn't known he was on today either. "Everything okay?" Ah, one of those. Had she given something away? She automatically tensed, nerves and anxiety setting her shoulders, a muscle jumping in her neck as she forced herself to swallow and nods. Perhaps it was too quick, and she hid the tremour in her hands in Dog's fur. "Yep, everything is fine," She forced on a bright smile, her specialty. "Everything okay with you?" She quickly diverted the conversation away from herself so he couldn't pry.
Elle's hands shook as she worked on putting in the car's new battery. It was a pretty simple fix, but she was still stuck on replaying last night's scene with Ryan, and it was getting harder to control the tremours working their way down her spine. He didn't mean to. He always said he didn't mean to. He loved her. If she would just do it right in the first place, then he wouldn't have to be angry and have her fix her mistakes. It had been dinner this time, and he was right, he had told her before not to serve the white wine with beef, but she'd been flustered as she'd had problems getting the oven to turn on and had begun to panic about dinner being late. He'd been quick to remind her, already in a foul temper from work. She would not forget again.
Usually she could hide it in the day, she was away from him, she could breathe and reset herself and smile and pretend everything was absolutely fine. Today was tough though, she felt exhausted, and her cheek hurt. She could handle the pain, she was horrifyingly used to it, but for some reason it just throbbed worse today. She'd deliberately put herself in the back today, picking up every job she could as she rushed from one vehicle to the next to get their parts in or figure out their issues or get them serviced and fit to pass their MOT's. She took a moment, straightening up from under the bonnet and putting her hands on her hips as the shaking intensified. Calm. Breathe. We're okay here. She took three long, slow, deep breaths in and then out until she could get herself under control. She needed to get this battery in sooner rather than later, the shaking needed to quit it.
She finished with the battery and double checked everything was set before she crossed that one on her list. A wipe of her perspiring forehead and then she was underneath the next car that had been said to be making a rattling noise. She heard the snuffle before she felt the nose, and though she was on high alert most of the time, it caught her a little by surprise being so intensely focused on her job. She jumped and smacked her head against the underneath of the car. "DOG! Leave Elle alone. She's working." At least that had warned her to Kasey's appearance. She'd been terrified by him when she'd first met him, his size and his bulk and his general expression had warned her off - big scary guy, her instincts screamed at her to run, but she'd stuck it out and got to know him. Very, very slowly. He was a decent guy, and she'd never seen any untoward behaviour around women before from him. "Sorry about him, Elle." She carefully pulled her out from under the car and managed a brief smile, "You know you never need to apologise for him." She loved Dog, he always brightened up her day.

Her childhood wasn't exactly very exciting. She was a pretty quiet child, always preferring to keep to herself with her dolls and little toy horses, or read books or play her guitar. her parents never truly minded, her mother was always baking and her father was in the army and left for periods at a time and without any siblings she didn't exactly have many other options. she was always quite insistent when she felt she needed or wanted something - not to the state of her being spoilt, she had never been superficial or materialistic and actually always rather charitable with things, however sometimes she came up to them with a request and with the promises to keep practising she was allowed to learn how to play the flute. she adored it from the off and found herself a natural talent, which was praised by her teacher and parents. she would often practise hours in her room, and her parents worried about her lack of friends - how much she enjoyed being by herself.
it was nothing to worry about however, she had always been a perfectly normal girl, she was just rather peaceful and sweet. when she was seven however her father died - he was a soldier, a sergeant her mother would continue to tell her whenever elle asked about him. at first she was only told that he would not be home for a while due to the wars, however over time her mother stopped telling her daddy would be home soon and eventually sat her down to tell her her father had died in action. elle did not burst into tears, but rather drew into herself. she stopped eating properly, stopped smiling...stopped playing her guitar. her father had always adored her playing, had always encouraged her more than her mother - who was more busy baking than daddy who used to come home on leave often and be around a lot. he used to put her on his knee and kiss her head and tell her stories, he made her laugh and he used to read to her. she adored her father and suddenly he was gone and she took it hard.
she was hospitalised briefly when she refused to eat for so long, and when she awoke to see the look on her mothers face she vowed never to scare her mother like that again - she vowed to make her mother smile again, just like elle had stopped smiling. they healed each other after time, and one day, elle began to play her music again. her mother taught her how to bake and they laughed and eventually things became better. she grew up to be a sweet girl, compassionate. she planted flowers in the garden for her mother, and she got good grades at school. when she was sixteen, she met a boy. of course being reasonably pretty she had began to notice male attention but she had always been rather shy when it came to boys. ryan however was confident and he managed to spin her enough lines to make her fall for him - fast. without realising or meaning to she came to give her heart to the boy, and whilst everything was adorable at first and he made her laugh and brought her a necklace with a heart on it... things didn't take forever to go south.
she had always been nervous about sleeping with him, and in the beginning he had always been happy to wait until she was ready, and yet a few months in the pressure began. he got angry with her when she said no, he'd go through periods of being grumpy with her or the next day he'd be flirting with other girls in front of her and put her down. she tried to end it, however he always apologised and she forgave him. eventually he pressured her enough to agree, the mistake of many. for her, it was by far not the most pleasant experience and suddenly he didn't care anymore. he wasn't gentle or nice with her anymore, he started pulling her around, pushing her, leaving bruises. she again tried to break it off but he broke down and promised he would never hurt her again. she believed him. they moved in together just after her seventeenth birthday and whilst for a few weeks everything was glorious, again it hit a dead end when her best friend - male made the mistake of making a comment that ryan heard when he was there.
her best friend -jasper- had never liked ryan, knew what he was like and tried to get elle to leave him but she was in too deep. accusations flew, ryan yelling that she was cheating on him with jasper and suddenly he hit her. it was the first time in a while she'd been afraid of him, and at first he was horrified...and yet over the next few months he stopped saying sorry, he stopped promising never to do it again. his control on her tightened, monitoring her phone calls, where she was during the day, who she talked to, what friends she had and where she went with them. if she got anything wrong, if she said something bad she soon paid for it. suspicions grew however and to avoid awkward questions, ryan moved them far from yorkshire to seven oaks where they knew nobody. he went out to work lucky enough for elle, and she discovered a passion in riding. she struggles to get through the day without displeasing him, but with ryan in control of everything there's nothing more she can do.

she was hospitalised briefly when she refused to eat for so long, and when she awoke to see the look on her mothers face she vowed never to scare her mother like that again - she vowed to make her mother smile again, just like elle had stopped smiling. they healed each other after time, and one day, elle began to play her music again. her mother taught her how to bake and they laughed and eventually things became better. she grew up to be a sweet girl, compassionate. she planted flowers in the garden for her mother, and she got good grades at school. when she was sixteen, she met a boy. of course being reasonably pretty she had began to notice male attention but she had always been rather shy when it came to boys. ryan however was confident and he managed to spin her enough lines to make her fall for him - fast. without realising or meaning to she came to give her heart to the boy, and whilst everything was adorable at first and he made her laugh and brought her a necklace with a heart on it... things didn't take forever to go south.
she had always been nervous about sleeping with him, and in the beginning he had always been happy to wait until she was ready, and yet a few months in the pressure began. he got angry with her when she said no, he'd go through periods of being grumpy with her or the next day he'd be flirting with other girls in front of her and put her down. she tried to end it, however he always apologised and she forgave him. eventually he pressured her enough to agree, the mistake of many. for her, it was by far not the most pleasant experience and suddenly he didn't care anymore. he wasn't gentle or nice with her anymore, he started pulling her around, pushing her, leaving bruises. she again tried to break it off but he broke down and promised he would never hurt her again. she believed him. they moved in together just after her seventeenth birthday and whilst for a few weeks everything was glorious, again it hit a dead end when her best friend - male made the mistake of making a comment that ryan heard when he was there.
her best friend -jasper- had never liked ryan, knew what he was like and tried to get elle to leave him but she was in too deep. accusations flew, ryan yelling that she was cheating on him with jasper and suddenly he hit her. it was the first time in a while she'd been afraid of him, and at first he was horrified...and yet over the next few months he stopped saying sorry, he stopped promising never to do it again. his control on her tightened, monitoring her phone calls, where she was during the day, who she talked to, what friends she had and where she went with them. if she got anything wrong, if she said something bad she soon paid for it. suspicions grew however and to avoid awkward questions, ryan moved them far from yorkshire to seven oaks where they knew nobody. he went out to work lucky enough for elle, and she discovered a passion in riding. she struggles to get through the day without displeasing him, but with ryan in control of everything there's nothing more she can do. habits: bites her nails often. picks at loose threads on her clothes. struggles to maintain eye contact with people. tends to hum or sing when she's scared.
overall personality: you'll struggle to find somebody sweeter and more compassionate than elle. she's a sweet-heart she really is, and maybe she lacks a backbone but it's no wonder when she's stuck with a man like ryan. she'd do anything for anyone, it's something she's always been like ever since she was a child and she's a big believer in charity and 'giving back'. she's honest, and there's not a lie that could ever pass her lips without her feeling so guilty she'd confess immediately afterward. she's trustworthy however she doesn't trust very equally in return but there's no wonder why that is - she thought ryan was trustworthy but he's broken his promises over and over. she's perhaps a little naive and too forgiving but she can't help it, she sees the best in everyone and likes to believe there's some good in everybody. she's a social butterfly deep down but she's not very outgoing or much of a partier or feisty and so she struggles to make good friends who don't mind that about her. she's quite lonely - whilst she's never minded bein along there's a difference, and she's starting to crave real friends and real love again now that she's so far from everything she knows and everyone who was good to her.
