She pondered over Charlie's words as he explained what he was working on. It was definitely an interesting way to approach things, but at least the work was somewhat provided for them. A good exercise to see how people's brains worked. While Renée couldn't handle that kind of work in her head, she could understand some of it. It was hard, but being a lawyer wasn't an easy thing.
When Charlie mentioned networking and all of that, Renée nodded. “It's for fun too, you know,” she smiled. “We're not going to be breathing down your neck.” The older woman raised her eyebrows at the question of bringing a date. Renee didn't know if she should mess with him or not. “Well, I know most of the people are. You sound like you want to…or are you hoping you don't have to?” she inquired. Usually if they were dodgy in their answers, it meant their mind was lingering somewhere they didnt know was right or not.
Renée smiled when he answered her. So matter of the fact and extremely flat. Classic Landon. “Ah, what a shame. I hope you still had a good holiday. We did. We stayed home and hosted family and friends,” she replied back. After Landon was settled, she sent a request for tea. While she was fully capable of making it herself, her home career - Mrs. Lola insisted she make it when she was in. So Renée allowed her.
“How have you been enjoying yourself so far at the firm?” she asked as she organized a bit more of her desk. Renee would obviously keep certain things private, but if he felt overworked - she would have a word for her husband. While some people would say it was the life of a lawyer, students still needed the time to be students.
It didn’t take long for Renee to sit down by herself. “You know my home is your home,” she smiled again. And it was true. Since the move here, Elosie had been extremely distant. Something that didn’t sit well with Renee. While she knew the other woman was going through it all, it didn’t mean that Odette’s needs were to be ignored. Yes, her goddaughter was an adult, but attention was still needed at a still tender age.
Long fingers pushed a delicate China plate with two cookies placed on it toward the young woman. “Have you been enjoying your time so far? I know it has been difficult…with your mother and so on.” Renee didn’t know the struggles to their full extent, but she knew it was bad enough.
“Excellent,’ she smiled, knowing full well that if had said no. Renee would have already done the thing. Maybe it was because she was the boss’ wife and people couldn’t necessarily say no to her. But she wasn’t pressuring anyone to talk to her more so they could have a break. Everyone in the office worked hard, and the days could be long.
Renee walked to the counter where she paid for the treats and grabbed a table number slat. “So, Charlie..what has my husband have you looming over today?” she asked, taking a seat across from the young man. Out of all the interns that Emmett had, Charlie was one who seemed to match her husband’s workaholic tendencies. Law was like that, but Renee wanted to make sure the young man had a life, too. “I’m sure you’ll be attending the gala as well. A nice break I think.” Kind of. It was still networking, but there would be dancing and so forth.
Renée’s gala was ever approaching. In reality, it was her husband’s, but she may have kidnapped it to help fundraise for the animal shelter. After all, what was more drab than just lawyers running around? Throw some good charity in there, and it seemed more appetizing.
Most of the interns had approached her, many nervous. But she told them it would be all fine and dandy. There would be plenty of people there to talk to, and the prospect of inviting a plus one helped. Something about inviting someone to a fancy shindig made people a bit more confident.
The café was closed for the day, to help the new cats that were dropped off to acclimate without all the people. Granted, Renée had her fair share of making sure she pet them all. Well, the ones that would allow her to do so. She was now enjoying being at her husband’s office. Mainly just to people-watch. She somewhat enjoyed the fast pace the office held, but she was also there to slow people down.
Feeling a need for a treat, she took the stairs to the second floor of the large office. Also, where the café was, it was a bit empty, minus a few people here and there. However, her eyes did land on someone who most definitely needed a break from scanning a leather folder of documents. “Charles,” she smiled. “Your regular coffee order? And I do believe you need a chocolate chip cookie as well.”
The holidays were always an interesting time for folks. Emmett’s students were hard at work the last semester. In her usual manner, Renée liked to meet with those students who worked with her husband. Mainly to see how they were doing and if they were okay. Renée allowed pure honesty, and if they voiced that Emmett or someone else at the firm was being a bit hard on them – she would deal with it. Law was already hard enough, there didn’t need the extra drama of it all from the office.
Today, was Landon. Renée thought he had graduated already, but if she remembered that he was continuing to his master’s at Hickstead. With possibly going to another school for his law. A lot was going on for him, at least that was presented to her. Landon was a bit uptight, but this young woman named Jaana seemed to be loosening him up a bit.
For privacy, the students were invited to talk to Renée in her office at home. It was far enough that Emmett couldn’t eavesdrop. But it was still in a comfortable area where the students could eat and drink. And not feel like they were being interviewed.
Renée had some sandwiches with the popular beverages out and ready to be served. Her couch in her office was nicely fluffed with some fun pillows and a blanket. She sat at her desk, going over some new contracts with another rescue center. As she was reading the final paragraph, a staff member knocked on the door frame. Renée looked up and saw Landon who was led in. “Good afternoon, Landon! I hope you had a good Christmas. Please, help yourself to some lunch.” A warm smile crossed her lips, as she closed the file in front of her, placing it to the side.
Renée looked at her phone a few days ago, surprised to see the name of a face she hadn’t expected to see. Okay, sure – they’ve texted. But never a phone call. And a phone call usually meant something serious. She didn’t know what she was expecting but was preparing for something serious and possibly emotional.
Emmett was out, handling Charlie and Landon – so Renée had plenty of time to tidy up the space before Odette showed up. She hadn’t seen the young woman in person in quite some time. They had met a few times, mainly with her mother. It sounded like Odette was doing okay from what she remembered, but it had been a bit since she was forced to move. With that in mind, Renée was diligent in making sure the guest room was set up as well. Emotions were always a fickle thing.
With a pot of tea heating up, and some cookies neatly arranged on a porcelain platter – Renée was notified by her doorman that a young woman named Odette was here. The older woman gave approval and her goddaughter was guided into the colorful living room. “Odette, ma chérie.” Renée gave the young woman a tight hug. “Please, sit. I hope your travel to the city wasn’t too difficult?” she asked, pouring hot water over Earl Grey.

Born in Paris, as the oldest of two Germain immigrants – Renée didn’t experience the luxury of her parent’s hard work until later in life. Her mother and father worked endless hours, creating a name for themselves as she grew up. Their lives didn’t have a drastic change until their father proved himself to be one of the biggest corporations in the world. Disney. A simple man, who went to school for engineering with an interest in sculpture, was accepted after years of hard work. At the time, Renée’s mother had made herself known as a reliable Vet.
While the money was rolling in, it didn’t make Renée or her family the stereotypical rich family on the block. If anything, her parents made sure the family was what people called stealth rich. It was evident that they had money but in a more middle-class kind of way. Renée and her siblings were encouraged to have jobs and to make their own money, their parents helping when needed. And despite their schedules, her parents always made sure they had time for their children – and not relying on Renée or a nanny to look after everyone.
With her mother’s love of animals and her father’s work ethic – Renée attended the National Veterinary School of Alfort, becoming a Vet Technician. She chose a closer location because she was a family girl as well as cost. Renée worked in France for a few years, before moving to London with a friend of hers. It was in London did Renée fell in love with the idea of grooming cats, as the veterinary practice she was working at offered the services.
London was also where she met her future husband, Emmett, a law student in his final year. Renée met him when his mother called for an in-house appointment for her precious Borzoi, Gigi. Their meeting was a bit of a hit or miss – mainly because of Emmett’s more stern personality and Renée’s bubbly one. His mother had sensed some kind of connection between the two – and often requested Renée to be the assisting technician on her in-house calls.
After a few more years, and Emmett returning to London from abroad – the two finally admitted the connection of the romance trope, grumpy and sunshine. It didn’t take long for the relationship to grow, as the two were goal-oriented and loved the idea of living a child-free life. They married on July 16, 2010, on the Amalfi Coast – a place the two often took a holiday to.
Despite Emmett saying Renée didn’t need to work, she continued to work in London until Emmett opted to open a new firm in Willow Bridge City. Renée was a bit heartbroken to leave London, but they kept their London flat for the times they wanted to go back – renting it out when they were away.
In December 2016, the move to Willow Bridge was completed. Emmett’s law firm was becoming a known entity. Renée remained unemployed, focusing on her hobbies. But she got bored, being a stay-at-home wife – and decided she wanted to incorporate her love for cats into something to keep her busy. Renée remembered her friend mentioning how there were cat cafes in Tokyo, and that gave Renée the idea of opening affoGATO.
The business was slow at first, but gained a lot of traction in 2018, becoming a hotspot for all animal lovers. Since the opening, Renée has had over 500 cat adoptions with her partner shelter. But not a woman to keep in place for too long – Renée opened a traveling cat grooming service, in early 2020. Most of her clientele is in the city, but happily travels to Hickstead twice a week to take clients there.
Renée currently is loving her life with her husband and their three cats. She’s found at work, hosting dinner parties, or spoiling her nieces and nephews.
