Whitney had told herself she must sleep in today. She couldn’t help but be a night owl, tracking the critters of the dark. Nathan always teased her about it, since their lifestyle choices were starkly different. But they were still very much engaged, so obviously something was working.
Unfortunately, the ruckus of the kitchen made Whitney’s eyes shoot open. What was Nathan up to now? She let out a yawn and allowed herself to shuffle out of bed. Hands went and dramatically opened the curtains in the bedroom, her body flashing the morning sun. The rays kissed her skin as Whitney slipped into her pajamas that lay on a chair next to the window.
She made her way downstairs to see her fiancé making or attempting to make something. To make her presence known, she blurted out “Straight up” as Paula Abdul’s voice graced the playlist.
full name • Whitney Heather Otero nicknames • Whit, Bat Girl, Dr. Otero age • 43 birthday • June 26, 1980 occupation • University Bio Teacher, Chiropterologist gender • female sexuality • bisexual
the appearance
face claim• Aubrey Plaza
identifying features• Whitney stands at an average pf 5'-6" with a fit build. She has a thick head of dark brown hair, often in thick waves or pulled up out of her face. Being half Puerto Rican, Whitney is a nice shade of tan - and will often get a few shades darker when she's out in the field. Her style is all over the place. She can read as the outdoorsy, always in hiking gear but can do professional wear when needed. For the most part, she loves her outdoor clothing, as Whitney finds herself on long walks or digging through dirt more often than not. Her eyes are her most expressive feature, almost like big orbs searching for information. Whitney can often come across as deadpan, despite her words sounding more expressive than her face.
the personality
likes • bats, nocturnal species, dusk, seeing the stars and moon, black licorice, strawberry milk, home-cooked meals, camping, research, conservation efforts dislikes • people who hold her back, unsolicited advice, going to bed early, the smell of cigarettes strengths • knowing her worth, not afraid to apologize, data entry, baking and cooking weaknesses • Nathan when he's around animals (makes her heart melt), dark chocolate, horse riding (is still learning), baby bats dreams • helping the local bat population thrive, inspire her students, educate people on conservation efforts, expand Nathan's business fears • animals dying in her care, not being there enough for her parents overall personality • Whitney is a curious mix of sarcasm and care. She can read off as a deadpan kind of person, but she does actually care about her peers and students. While she loves her job and the work she does, she isn't one to overwork herself. It's something that balances out her and Nate. He drives her, but she can get him to slow down and relax. Mainly from the fact that their jobs require two different kinds of personality. Her family is her world, so there are times she has to call her parents and siblings three times a week. As she isn't able to travel back home more than three times a year. A bit of a carefree person, Whitney isn't one to get annoyed with Nate's past. While some people would find it odd that he's working with an ex, Whitney views it that he's coming home to her. A bit of a goofy teacher, she will partake in some of her students' shenanigans. The amount of TikToks and Instagram posts is more than most. Mainly because she knows if she can intertwine science and their interests, it keeps them engaged. But she knows when hard work is needed, and is a fair professor.
the history
father • Robert Otero, 63 - runs animal sanctuary mother • Melinda Otero, 62 - runs animal sanctuary siblings • Peter, 45 Francesca, 38 important people • NATHAN KENDALL DRUMMOND , fiancé Isaac, ex-fiancé hometown • Malta, Montana overall history • Whitney was born as the middle child of the Otero family clan, in the back of the family truck on the way to the hospital. She grew up eating mud pies, counting tumbleweeds, and learning quickly how not to approach any kind of animal. It was almost a joke, that the children were almost feral – just how in tune with nature Whitney and her siblings grew up.
It was as if Whitney was destined to enter a field with animals, as she was always the one kid who constantly volunteered with anything pertaining to the animals that her parents rescued. But her parents quickly learned that Whitney was more drawn to things that animals regurgitated or how they communicated versus how to treat a broken leg on a horse. Mainly from the fact Whitney had decided to squirrel a hidden stash of owl pellets in one of the drawers of her mother’s fine China display when she was seven. And on occasion poking around the cow patties with a stick. Thankfully, her curiosity never caused too much damage. Other than the time her dad caught her attempting to get on the roof of the barn to peek at a new nest that was forming.
She challenged her teachers, especially her science teachers. It was the only class that Whitney ever truly managed to pay attention to. Whitney couldn’t really challenge herself until she started high school, where Mrs. Hoffman was able to nail Whitney down. The older teacher was able to feed Whitney’s potential, often spending a lot of time with Whitney outside of school to answer most of the questions given. She’s also the woman who introduced Whitney to the study of the local bat population – through a volunteer program. Something that would completely shape Whitney’s field of study.
With her diligence in her studies, Whitney received a full ride to the University of Montana, for their Terrestrial Wildlife Biology Program. It was during her sophomore year; did she met Nathan Drummond. A nerdy, goofy pre-med student whom Whitney befriended as they both suffered through Organic Chemistry. They bonded over their similar lives of being raised around animals, as well as their interest in finding the most constellations at one time. It didn’t take long for Whitney to develop a crush on Nate but attempting to date never worked out due to him meeting Beth Wilkins in junior year. So, the two remained friends and kept in touch when they went their separate ways for their respective PhD programs.
Whitney attended Colorado State University for her PhD in Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. It’s where she met Isaac Connors, the person Whitney believed she could see getting old with. The two hit it off quite well, dating for the 4 years of Whitney’s program. Isaac proposed with an origami ring after Whitney walked across the stage to receive her degree.
They stayed in Colorado, Isaac working for a chemistry company – and Whitney working with the local conservation efforts. But the relationship turned sour when Whitney was offered to become an associate professor, as well as assist a former professor in England to help track the local bat population. Isaac didn’t want to move, and Whitney, realizing that Isaac wasn’t going to budge – opted to move back to Montana to clear her thoughts.
After a lot of conversation with her family, Whitney realized that both parties were never going to budge. And Isaac, in their six years together, never truly compromised – or allowed Whitney to be selfish for jobs or dreams. It was always about making sure he was comfortable and set. Plus, she had never truly received the engagement ring she wanted – where two heirloom pieces were combined.
With the help of her father and brother, Whitney returned to Colorado where she ended her engagement to Isaac. It went well, as it appeared to be a mutual feeling. So she moved all her belongings and crossed the pond when she was shy of thirty-five.
She began teaching at Hickstead University the following year but had inserted herself in the local bat-tracking community. Whitney was enjoying herself, but she did desire more in her life. She was ready to put herself out there again. So, with the urging of her younger sister – Whitney agreed to go on a blind date. A friend in her conservation circle decided to play matchmaker with a friend of her husband’s, leading Whitney to find herself on a kayak trip.
Lo and behold, Whitney was met by the face of Nate Drummond, a man she hadn’t seen in person since her engagement party. He was still as handsome as ever, albeit a bit more muscular. It didn’t take long for the two to enter their antics and humor. After a year of beating around the bush, the two finally admitted their feelings – new and old.
Whitney moved in with Nate and bought the parcel of land next to his – creating her own little slice of heaven. Meaning a bat rescue facility – as well as a place to teach her students and the public about bat conservation. Since then, the couple have welcomed a few more animals to their home – filling the void that Whitney had.
After being granted full professor status at the University, Whitney came home to a lovely surprise. Nate had created a scavenger hunt that ended when it turned dark. He had created the outline of their shared constellation of Cancer on the side of the barn in Christmas lights. After dropping the ring box, and a few more frantic moments of searching – Whitney was presented with a custom ring that contained the gems of two heirloom pieces. A red natural Spinel from her mother’s side, and diamonds from her father’s side. Her wishes and dreams were finally becoming reality at the age of forty-three.
