Helena was born the middle child of David and Julia Fletcher. It was a full and wonderful family, with enough love to go around. Even when her younger siblings entered the mix, it was still just as full as before.
However as Helena grew older, she argued with her mother more often than not over her preference to play rough sports with the boys. Julia wanted her daughter to grow up a pretty young woman, which only caused Helena to rebel. Where her mother wanted flowers, bows and dresses, Helena took to mud, beanies and jeans. There was always an argument about that she wore and how she always looked too boyish. Even in school, she was hanging out with the sporty guys - football, rugby, basketball - it didn't matter, and when fights broke out she swung and hit like any other guy rather than the stupid cat-fights Helena saw other girls get into.
Her grades were poor in school, constant across everything that wasn't sports or creative, and rather than admitting her struggles, Helena just threw everything back at her parents - certain that they didn't actually care. The rebel of the family continued to be a hazard on the day to day, and eventually the fights ceased because her parents stopped acknowledging her. She continued to do poorly in school, even repeating a high school year because she fell so far behind in class. But even so, she took out trophies and medals in sports, even joining a band with her best friends after discovering the drums. She was good at it too, and her voice though up trained helped.
She dropped out of college, half way through her sports stint to pursue the band she'd joined, but they dumped her when a slightly better player joined in. Shut out of all she enjoyed, Helena took to roaming the streets at all hours, keeping to herself. She was seventeen when a large dog escaped its yard after she moved by its fence, savaging her arms as she attempted to get out of the situation and it was only by chance that a young off duty paramedic was walking by. He managed to get the dog off and shouted for assistance, holding onto the scruff of the vicious dog though Helena felt bad for the animal.
Over eighty stitches later across both arms, Helena was released from the hospital, picked up by her father who immediately berated her for being selfish and foolish. Of course she shouted back at him for it, not willing to just lay down and allow him to walk all over her. Julia likewise went nuts, but Helena told her in simple terms that she wouldn't have to worry about her for much longer. And she made good on her promise at the end of the week - packing up her bag and leaving the family home without another word.
She couch surfed for a while before her friends gave her the middle finger or their parents said it was best she left and didn't come back. And she did. She got herself out of town, kept on the move for the next two years - moving from shelter to shelter, stealing cars or some how catching a ride away in trailers and caravans.
At the age of twenty, Helena met Marshall. She found herself falling for his silly jokes and charming personality, even going as far as to seek him out and forget about moving around. She liked him a lot and found herself wanting to be with him in a romantic sense. But she was blind to what he was doing - getting her hooked on drugs. It was little bits at first, something she was sure she could quit at any time, but the amount she was taking began to increase to a point that most of her rationality ran out the window.
At twenty-six, she discovered she was pregnant to Marshall, and the world had a sudden, sharp perspective change. However, her attempts were at first, futile as Marshall laid into her with so much fury Helena was knocked out cold a few times. When she did finally escape and she ran into the nearest police station, Marshall was charged but his last words were that he would get her for what she'd done. Afraid, she begged to be taken anywhere, to get help and after some phone calls a registered nurse - Betty Sutton - welcomed her into her home with open arms. And eight months latter, little Adeleigh was born a little premature, but strong.
It was a rough road to recovery, and the withdrawals were hard on Helena as well as on her newborn child, going through a roller coaster of emotions and sickness but Betty was there by her side no matter what condition she was in and was more than happy to help out with her baby.. She took care of Helena, listening to her, understanding her, and figured out several long running conditions that her own family weren't even aware of. Helena still reaches out to Betty even now, considering the woman to be the closest person she knows to be like an actual mother, and Adeleigh considers Betty to be her 'grandmother'.
On her feet, Helena moved out of Betty's apartment to Hickstead hoping that it would be the last place Marshall would look for her, and allow her the chance to remain steady with her young daughter, hopeful that life would look up. She lives in a flat with her daughter and two rescue dogs - a pair of female Bull Mastiffs called Lavender and Sage.
