he really needed to get a gym set up in his own place. the gym wasn't somewhere he loved working out because it always felt so over exposed. call it habit from his days of working undercover and needing to keep his eyes on everyone around him, but the gym was one of the worst places for that. but until he got off his ass and actually turned his spare room into a place he could work out, he was stuck coming here at least twice a week to keep up the routine he'd fallen into since he'd moved back to town to recuperate after the 'car accident' his family believed he'd been in. while he was recovered and almost back to full fitness the routine was hard to break. it was almost strange though, he'd never been one for routine and structure and being in one place for too long but this time it was a little different and he was struggling to understand why.
he walked through the gym, doing his best to ignore the people that were in there so he could focus on what he needed to do, finish and then get out of there but one person caught his eye. he wondered briefly if ben should even be in here but he wouldn't voice that to his nephew, there were plenty of people in ben's life that could tell him what to do and max wouldn't be one of them. he'd always thought of himself as the fun, if not always absent uncle. it had been awful to hear about what had happened though, knowing that he'd been just down the street in his office at the back of the pizza place and hadn't known what was happening until sirens had blared past. then it had been a waiting game to hear the news they were praying for, which was that ben was going to be okay and pull through.
he deviated off the path and made his way to the treadmill that his nephew was currently on and he came to lean his elbow casually on one of the handles and he looked at ben. "bit of a slow pace there bud." he teased lightly. he didn't think that ben would be allowed to work out so soon but again, fun uncle max was who he was, not over bearing almost parental uncle max. "it's almost like you're not trying." there was no seriousness in his voice, it was just something to break the ice and he had never been the 'hello' kind of person.
max had stopped by to check on his horses, though he knew that if anything had happened in the last few days the staff and his brother would have called him. he'd taken a spur of the moment trip out of town, deciding to hop on a plane and chasing somewhere that was hot and sandy. it would cure the itch he felt in his feet for the next few weeks at least. he'd never been one for settling into one place, but he had to admit it was nice to have a place to call home again. he'd spent so many years going from place to place, being so remote sometimes there wasn't anyone else but him and his team for weeks. since he'd come home to recuperate, he'd enjoyed spending time with his family. he'd come home periodically over the years but now he felt like he was really getting to know them, better than he had in years and plus his parents weren't getting any younger. the last place he wanted to be if something happened was days of travel away from them.
he rubbed his hand over narcs nose lightly as he fed him a piece of carrot. "that's enough." he said with a chuckle as the horse tossed his head. as the footsteps echoed down the aisle, he knew who it was before the voice spoke. he turned his head to look at his older brother and he couldn't help but roll his eyes slightly. "you're just salty i grew taller than you did." he smirked slightly as he straightened up from leaning on the stall door. "i glanced through the window as i walked past, you seemed to be having so much fun with the paperwork i didn't want to disturb you."
there were times when max found himself thinking, why am i still in this town? it wasn't like him to stay in one spot to long without getting itchy feet. he'd been here since he'd had to recover from being injured in the field and while he was healed now, there was no sign that he was up and leaving town like his family had all expected him to do. he hadn't said it out loud but there was some things that were keeping him in town longer this time, and he was currently driving towards two of them. they hadn't been in his life all that long but they'd become a big part of it, namely because of their, quirks? quirks wasn't the right word max thought, absolutely bonkers was a better description of them.
one was evil incarnate to some people, but to max hades was just picky about who he wanted in his life, around his stall and walking the surface of the earth. making small children cry and picking on max's other horse seemed to be two of the main ways that hades passed his time. speaking of narc, that was one of the strangest horses he'd ever come across, which was what had made him to intriguing to max. he liked challenges and these two came with so many of them. he pulled his ute into one of the empty spots at his brother's barn and he jumped out nimbly, reaching into the back seat to grab the bag of treats he always used to bribe hades into doing what he wanted.
it was almost bedlam the moment his feet landed on the ground. he could hear narc from outside, the frantic screams coming from the horse echoing out of the open barn doors and he found himself taking off into a jog towards them. he crossed the threshold of the barn just in time to watch the rump of one of his horses walking down the barn, away from the stall he should have been safely locked in and he stopped for just a second. "for fucks .." he said as he let out an exasperated sigh and he shook the bag of treats, hoping to grab his attention. "oi, god of the world under, get your ass back here." he called as he shook the bag of treats while walking to investigate what had happened to narc.
he saw it the second he reached the stall and he would have burst out laughing if that would have made the situation any better. he quickly ducked into the empty stall his horse should have been in and he reached down to grab the teddy. "you're okay narc." he said as he left the stall to walk to the door of the distraught horses stall. "here you go." he held the teddy over the door and wiggled it a little, knowing that he'd settle slightly once the animal was back in his mouth. "hades, you better be walking your ass back this way!" he called back over his shoulder, shaking the treats once again. one might think that the horse on the loose was the bigger problem in that moment, but max was worried that narc was about to drop dead of a heart attack.

hometown • hickstead, uk. overall history • so max was 100% an accident. on his good days, he was a happy surprise. on his bad days, well he was still a happy accident according to his parents. born seven years after they'd decided to stick to two children, the age gap didn't put much of a dent in the bond the brothers have. max has vague memories of being tossed out windows, but his mother swears up and down that never happened. he's not sure if she's in denial and has sworn his brothers to secret or whether he's imagined it but either way, the memory is there. being nine years younger never stopped him from trying to keep up with his brothers, to one up them and to out prank them. he wasn't always successful but his ingenuity in using his speed and wits against them when he was out sized and out strengthed sometimes amazed his parents.
he knew from a young age that he didn't want to be a farmer. he did the work because he had to and he did it without complaint, but he never liked it. his parents could see it and beyond helping out with chores they didn't try to make him do any more than that. school didn't really interest him either. he did the work because he had to but he made no real effort to do better than average, he was too busy goofing with his friends and being something of a class clown. there was many a parent teacher meeting had about it but even so, his teachers could never say a bad word about his demeanor or his manners, he was a good kid, he was just that bored he liked causing mischief in class.
there was some saving grace for his parents though when he was old enough to really get into team sports. he played just about everything he could at one point or another, but he settled on basketball. he doesn't really have a reason for it, it just seemed to be the one he stuck with. there were also scouts, he was heavily involved with his local scout group, and it was his involvement in that that led to him joining the army when he turned eighteen. he didn't tell his parents until he'd signed up, he told them the day before he went to do the fitness test and once, he passed that the rest was history. he did his basic training and then deployed, quickly moving up through the ranks and sent to the far lying reaches of the british army. he gave six years to the army before he got another offer. people had taken notice and an offer came up to work for the not so discreet MI6 and he jumped at the chance. he was facing a desk job in the army after his next promotion, so he knew the timing was right. his parents were thrilled when it brought him back to the uk, though he was based in london, he was closer to home. though they didn't know what his job actually was, as far as his family were aware he was working for the foreign services office among the different embassy's in london. little did they know his job was far more exciting.
he worked for them full time for 5 & 1/2 years before he had to stop. an injury to his right hip took him out of the field and he wasn't suited for a desk job. the story he told his family was a car accident so there were no questions asked and he came home to recover and recuperate. after being gone from home for so long, he found himself actually enjoying being back and he decided to stay for a while. he even surprised his family when he purchased two horses for himself, because that was as good as putting roots down and then when he purchased the pizza place in town, they almost died of shock. he's made no promises to stay, but he's told them he's not going anywhere for a while. he'll just take enough holidays to curb his itchy feet. he's got the sense that all's not going smoothly with his family, and he wants to be around for them, after all he's spent enough time away from them.
