full name • axe conrad barrett. nicknames • ax. age • twenty seven. birthday • march eighteenth. occupation • police detective. gender • male. sexuality • bisexual.
the appearance
face claim• zane holtz.
identifying features• his sharp jaw, his piercing eyes and the strong way he walks are all things that earn him attention but it's his presence too. he's intimidating when he wants to be, he uses his broad shoulders to his advantage and he knows what to put onto his body to make it look good.
the personality
likes • his own company, his job, solving puzzles, riddles, proving people wrong, trusting his gut, pizza, coffee - he lives on the stuff, putting his feet up, sitting with his legs crossed, christmas, a good steak. dislikes • losing cases, seeing perps walk, letting victims down, photographs of himself, ill fitting clothes, shoes with zips, belts, sticky fingers. strengths • his jaw, his curious nature, the ability to dig deeper than most people. weaknesses • when children cry, rare meat. dreams • to keep people safe. fears • failing in his duty. overall personality • one thing about axe is that he's always seen the world in a very black and white way. wrong is wrong and right is right. there has never been much in between. what he knows as fact is settled and what's unproven is up in the air still. some might think it's a bad way to look at the world but he makes it work for him. it's helped him grow into someone who, seeing the world in a unique way, is able to form solid opinions and morals, who helps those who need it and is happy to leave those who don't to their own devices. he doesn't stick his nose in where it's not wanted and he keeps to himself because people can be tiring in a personal sense. but he's also got a dry sense of humor, a quiet way about him that still commands a room when he's in it and a smile that can charm just about the crankiest old lady whose angry at her neighbours.
the history
father • peter barrett, mechanic, 59. mother • alice barrett nee rembrall, cook, 56. siblings • none. important people • none. hometown • spilsby, uk. overall history •axe was one of those kids that parents joked about having but had never planned. his parents were happy enough being their own people, living life and being that couple that traveled the world without worrying about having to keep anyone alive but themselves. all it took was one birthday dinner that had a little too much wine, a pill skipped and all of a sudden he was on his way. of course it was a shock, and while they almost decided not to have him, they decide against giving him the axe, hence his name. his father thought it would be a funny anecdote for him to tell at parties one day. he's almost thirty and axe has never brought it up.
even though he'd been an unplanned part of their lives, luckily he managed to slip into them easily. he grew up differently than most children, there was never a time when they spent more than a year in one place until he was thirteen. they travelled around the country, his parents following the work and where life took them as they always had and axe was just along for the ride. the constant moving around made it hard to make and keep friends, but luckily it taught him to do well in his own company. he could slip in with a crowd of kids or be happy not seeing another person his age for weeks. it was how he'd grown up, he didn't know any different.
he was an only child, his parents let only let one slip through and he was happy enough being the only child in their lives. he wasn't doted on, he wasn't spoiled but he was loved, educated, fed and clothed, what else did a kid really need? apparently, a lot. well, that's what he discovered when they finally settled down in a small town just outside of nottingham. the lives the kids in his neighbourhood were so different than the one he'd had; he didn't understand it at first. the things they had, the amount of stuff they had and the attachment they had to it. he'd grown up only having what he could fit into a suitcase so imagine his surprise when he discovered there were parents that let their kids have so much more.
he did slowly get used to life in one place, made friends and even took a liking to being around the same people a lot. of course, he still liked his own company over the company of others but being social wasn't a drag. he still holds onto that to this day. he grew up eventually, waved at his parents as he left the small town and moved onto other things. it took him a few attempts, but he eventually joined the academy, became an officer of the law and within a few years he'd worked his way up through the ranks to become a detective. it meant another move, but he assured them he had one more in him and soon he was driving himself down to hickstead.
it's been a few months since he arrived and while the small town took a little getting used to, he's slowly coming to think of it as home.
