Though muffled, he caught his son's words: "It's open!" A sigh could not help but to escape Kasey before he opened the door to the greeting of Dog, who ecstatically greeted him with a wagging tail and leaning aggressively into his owner's legs. Kasey smiled at his companion, crouching a little to give Dog a few good pets while keeping the pizza box out of the way, "You know you should keep that door locked, right?!" He called back, knowing well that his son didn't give a rat's ass about his opinions. The man already knew some summary of a response he was going to get, 'Yeah, okay, whatever, Kasey'. Kasey. That that that Rex continued to insist to call him by his first name over Dad bothered him - granted, he knew why it was his son's choice title for him and maybe, at a time, he probably deserved it, but now?
Regardless, it was a topic pointless of arguing. They both were stubborn men and they weren't going to budge on their own opinions of the situation. That much was clear. Tally would always insist to him in private that Rex would eventually change and start calling him 'dad', he simply agreed with her to not disappoint her. Kasey moved through the small apartment now, placing the box of pizza on the small island while the Belgian Malinois remained glued to his side. Cerulean eyes glanced down at Dog now, "Where's Rex, boy?" He knew exactly where the twenty two year old was, but it was still hilarious to see his dog's eyes light up at the question and scamper away to lead him to the answer.
He followed after the dog now and as he got close to the 'studio room', he started to talk, "Hey, I brought Piz-" but his words came to a halt when he stepped into the workspace now. On canvas, there was a beige background with a perfectly painted portrait of Dog, staring right back at him. It was always fascinating to see how talented Rex really was, given that Kasey truthfully wasn't very sure where that skill came from, "That Dog?" he asked now, a stupid question really, but the man knew that his son was just as aloof as him when it came to conversational topics it seemed, "It's beautiful."

Kasey had left Dog with Rex for the day, knowing that it was going to be a long day at work with parts getting delivered and heling Heidi set the record straight as to how her maternity leave was going to work while she was out. While everyone in the garage was nice and amiably got along with out any issues, Kasey had a hard time trusting a bunch of kids, irregardless if they were over the age of twenty, to not goof off while the boss was away. Thankfully his whole demeanor alone appeared to keep people from snarking or goofing off, or at least that is what he heard on the download from Elle - who would help him tag team any shenanigan's that may breakout over the next six weeks. It was funny hearing that, mainly because being the father of two young adults taught him that they didn't give a crap about the sort of aura he admitted, well, maybe Tally, Rex not so much.
His son had managed to somehow inherited his Kasey's personality - aloof and finding very little need in the terms of small talk. In the back of his mind, the man couldn't help but to wonder if that had somehow been his fault. Kasey knew that he hadn't handled Morgan's death well at all, and it only felt like just very recently was he able to move on fourteen years later. A sigh escaped him at the thought, nothing he could do about it now but move forward and do his best. Cerulean eyes glanced at the pizza sitting on the passenger seat, wondering if the pizza would win him over at least dinner with Rex before he and Dog went on their way back home to an empty house. Knowing Rex, the boy would probably just pull the cheese and toppings off and eat nothing but the bread and sauce.
Shaking his head, he parked in the visitor parking for Rex's apartment complex, grabbed the box and headed into the lobby before taking the lift up. Thankfully, the box still felt warm to the touch despite the ten minute drive over from Pizza Express to Woodbain. Stopping outside the door, he could already hear huffing on the other side. Dog likely had sensed him the moment he stepped out of the hallway. A smile touched his lips - no one would every love him as much as that Belgian Malinois would. Shifting his weight so he could free one hand, Kasey knocked on the door to the greeting on a barking dog and waited for Rex to come and open the door.

Kasey could not help but to wince a little at the thump that had come from under the car when Dog's wet nose made contact with the young woman's leg. If that drew blood, he was certain he would never hear the end of it from Heidi. Cerulean eyes shot the Belgian Malinois a look. In typical fashion, the dog did nothing more than ignore his scolding look as he waited for Elle to emerge from underneath the car to give her a proper greeting. The male tended to watch himself around the young woman, knowing fully well that when he first came to the garage, she may have been mildly terrified of him. He was also certain that she had her fair share of history behind those blue eyes of her. He always did his best to give her space though, if she didn't want to share anything with him, that was her call.
Before long, Elle head appeared from underneath the car, rolling herself out. As soon as she was sitting up right and managing a brief smile, Dog flopped right over her legs - looking for the love that he thought he was denied by the Caufields. The move made Kasey roll his eyes before returning his gaze down towards the young woman. He offered her his usual slight smile. The antics of his dog had locked them into conversation, since he couldn't leave the dog unattended despite Elle being here. He swore to Heidi for permission of free ranging him at the garage, he'd kept watch over him all the time, "I didn't realize you were on schedule to work back here today," in fact, he was fairly certain that she had either been off or slated to do some other work at the garage per some rotations. Hedging his bets, he cut straight to the chase, "Everything okay?"

It was that time of the week where he needed his beer. Work had been more trying than usual, and he couldn't decide if it was because of Heidi's due date and Kasey's self imposed doomed sense from it or the parts taking longer to get store or the fact that the customers have been haughtier than usual about turnarounds. Home had also not been a sanctuary either, his kids bickering between themselves over something to do with a mutual acquaintance and he had to play referee more often then he wanted to this week. Usually, the time for peace meant going hiking or going to go sit on the beach, but the weather had been shittier as of lately so might as well sit inside with a beer. The man didn't like to drink at home, he didn't want to set an example for his kids, so he found himself at the Luna Lounge.
They were probably used to him by now, sulking off in a corner by himself to relax. He never paid attention to who was suppose to play or preform that night. Sometimes he enjoyed the festivities and other times, he didn't. Kasey had no favorites, considering his age, he preferred not to since he didn't know if it would be creepy otherwise and well, he was too old to be picking up women at an establishment now. He also preferred Luna over R&R just because of it's atmosphere. It was quieter and typically not about trying to have a wild night. The staff didn't seem to pay him any mind either, and by now, they typically always knew what he wanted: Obsidian Stout, if on tap. If not, whatever Stout they had. And it always came in a pint. And whatever appetizer was recommended for the evening. Cerulean eyes looked to his phone for a moment, making sure that his kids confirmed that they knew he was getting home later and acknowledged that they would take care of the dog, seeing as he left him home as home security. When the acknowledgement came, he tucked his phone away and sat back, slinking into the shadows of the sparkling place to relax and await his beer. His cerulean eyes watched the other patrons, observing as always like some sort of silent sentinel.

"I need the parts by the end of the week," he muttered darkly into the phone, eyes narrowing at the wall as the supplier tried to give him some excuse, "No, they are going to be delivered here by the end of the week or this relationship between the garage and you is over." And then, he quickly hung up before any more excuses or whining could come out of the phone. Kasey Caufield didn't have time to listen to the world's smallest violin anymore. That was the one thing he hated about being involved in a business, everybody had an excuse for delays. Hickstead was small, but it wasn't fucking remote. He didn't know how Heidi did it, considering that she ran the whole operation, he would have been grey by now if he had her job. At least he just had to bitch out people or keep them on track. Rubbing his temples, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to recenter himself and be at peace or whatever.
After a few minutes, it seemed to finally sink into him and he opened his eyes. Cerulean eyes found amber ones, and Dog was staring at him from his dog bed. Animals were funny, they always seemed to know when something was up, "I'm fine," he said gruffly. The response was just some loud tail thumps before the Belgian Malinois got up and walked to the office door to sit down once more and stare back at his human. Kasey knew that look. His gaze shifted to the clock for a moment, he supposed he could start lunch break early, "Okay." He said now, getting up, walking over to the door and opening it. Dog didn't need to be told twice before he ran out. Kasey just followed him, cutting through the lobby. The clerk and the regulars were used to it by now as they headed out and walked a few doors down to grab some food to go. They waited by their favorite cafe, who had become used to the pair also. Always had the same order: a turkey club sandwich and some rotisserie chicken to go. He'd order ahead and pay in cash, outside, so he could stay with this dog and didn't have to enter the food establishment.
With their food in hand, they walked back to the garage. Dog charging ahead and leaving Kasey behind in the dust. Cerulean eyes did catch, however, that instead of going back in through the lobby to cut back to their domain, his dog went into the garage. The male frowned, mainly because he knew the dog was going to be a distraction to whoever was working today. Like his human children, his dog didn't seem to understand that the world did not revolve around him and he did not need to stick his long nose in peoples stuff. Sighing, Kasey picked up the pace a little and managed to get to the garage now. Poking his head in, he scanned the garage to soon find the Belgian Malinois, poking someone's leg as they worked under a car. Given the fit of the work pants and the size of the feet, he immediately recognized who it was, "DOG! Leave Elle alone. She's working." To the dog's credit, he backed off from nosing the young woman's leg, but he sat down now, panting happily away and waiting for her to come out from the car. Sighing, he headed over to the pair now, "Sorry about him, Elle."

The office was quiet, even the garage was quiet. A lull in the typically busy establishment. A sound that Kasey Caufield enjoyed. DOG was laying by the door, appearing passed out by his owner knew better, the second someone walked through the door, the dog would be up on his feet to give a proper greeting. With this moment of peace, he reached over to a desk drawer and opened it, pulling out his personal calendar and flipped it open, studying the dates. He normally used it track stuff when he needed to be absolutely at disposal of his kids, but lately, they have needed him less it felt like. Kasey knew it was because they were becoming adults of their own, but hell if he didn't love them, and he would always be avaliable whenever they needed him. There was also something else he was tracking: his boss's pregnancy.
It sounded and looked a little creepy, when one gave it a first glance, but it was important to Kasey. It meant the moment that Heidi Hunter popped out a living human being, she would be off on leave and the garage would be left to him and Elle McKenzie to run. Yes, the calendar in relation to Heidi felt a little like a dooms day clock. A big fucking read circle around the suspected due date, and it seemed to get closer and closer each day. The man was certain that his boss was asking Elle to be point on watching over the place and making sure the mechanics stuck to their work. After all, the young mechanic deserved it. She had been here for a while, she ought to take a crack at a more leadership role and expand her horizons. However, Elle was also sweet, insanely sweet, the kind of sweet that people might take advantage of, which is why Kasey was certain he would be back up to Elle.
Unlike Elle, he wasn't sweet. Not on the outside at least. He was gruff, silent, lurking in the background like some gremlin or trash panda waiting to pounce on a victim. Kasey didn't allow anyone to fuck with him, and he wouldn't allow anyone, mechanics or customers, to fuck with Elle or Heidi for the matter either. Even if Heidi let him off the hook of playing overlord to the garage in her absence, he knew he would still end up stepping up to the plate. It's what he did. Pulling out some folders now, cerulean eyes poured over supplies lists, making note of what he would have to order soon. It was then that both he and Dog heard the approaching footsteps. As if man and animal were synced, Kasey glanced up now to see none other than Heidi Hunter in the door way, and Dog was up to greet her ecstatically, "What's up, Boss?"

identifying features• Standing at 5’10, Kasey is considered of average height with a decent built, and still has plenty of muscle thanks to the sometimes physical work his job requires and having a hyper dog who requires long walks. He tends to keep himself on the scruffier side, his facial hair slowly staring to show graying hairs while his dark remains dark and on the longer side. He usually cleans himself up for important events or at his daughter’s request. Kasey has a few battle scars that he usually keeps covered up and out of sight if he can help it.

He can be a loner, and often will go off to be on his own or do his own things. More introverted than extroverted. Deep down though, Casey is a rather sensitive and thoughtful guy. Casey can be pragmatic, and is quick to react in crisis, and often tries to set aside feelings for logic in order to always remain present in the situation. In addition, Casey is fiercely loyal to those he loves and cares for, and will always go out of his way to help or assist them. He can also be protective, which is also an annoying feature if you were to ask his two children.
the history

They make up of little houses and trailers scattered throughout forestry lands in the shade of the mountainous region that spreads into four other states. Born second, after his after his brother, the Caufield children grew up a life with a needy mother and an absentee father. Thumper Caufield was usually out cooking in Meth labs or pissing off some of the higher ups (drug bosses) in the area, which either way, is a dangerous game to play. With their father gone all the time, their mother turned into a needy woman starving for attention, smothering her children with her hysterics and being kind to them in one instant, and freaking out on them in the next. This lead to the children becoming more independent and eventually, go looking out for their own troubles just to escape their mother, but in the end, they always ended up coming back, or at least Casey did.
It taught him how to survive, as well as the people around him. His uncle in particular was where he learned how hunt animals out in the wild, skin, and cook. With his friends though, he picked up the nasty habit of drinking a little too often. His siblings would have their own shenanigans that they would get into. Later down the road, their father died from a meth mishap. The lab exploded while Thumper had been cooking, or so that was according to all of his dad’s friends but Casey wasn’t sure if he entirely believed them. So he went around, poking his nose into business that was not meant to be his and asking people things that shouldn’t have been asked. So the people in question retaliated. Casey got his ass handed to him that night, and he took it as a sign of being weak, but not only that, but also that he needed to get out of there for good. So come the age of eighteen, he went over to the high school where he heard there was an U.S. Army Recruiter and never looked back.
Basic training was grueling, but Casey managed to survive, push on, and then excel. He did not have any desires to return to his home, which was his main drive. After graduating basic, and being shipped off to Texas, the army soon became his way of life. While there, he butted heads with an Officer, Morgan Drake. The higher ranking officers always said she was going somewhere. Top of her class, expert driver, great leadership qualities, she had the power to go places. Casey didn’t see what the big deal was, she was difficult to get along with and they found themselves always butting heads with each other. Disagreeing, tactics, everything. Eventually, the Army separated them from their squad, and each went their separate ways. Casey to the rangers and Morgan to supply runners.
Years later, they would run into each other again. The army could be a small world sometimes. Apparently, not having to work with each other turned out to suit them better for each other’s personalities. Respect came first, then developed by friendship and complicated by romantic feelings. Despite this though, Casey knew he wanted to be with Morgan for the rest of his life and finally proposed, to which she accepted. Picture perfect wedding to follow, and then each got their deployments, thankfully this time at the same overseas base. On one mission, something went wrong, and while Casey and most of his unit managed to get out. Battered and banged up, Casey decided to honorable discharge. He went civilian and began to work mechanics on army vehicles. It would also give him more time to spend with Morgan. In addition, they decided to focus on building a family when Morgan was state side. And so they did. First a son, and then a daughter, the picturesque life continued.
As Morgan’s deployments started to ware on their family, she decided that her next deployment would be her last, and then she would go civilian like Casey did. This way, they would always remain together and while her children loved her dearly, they were questioning why she was always gone. Sadly, her deployment did end up being her last, but Morgan came home in a casket. Killed in action, doing her duty to get her supply of HUMVEES to those who needed them. Casey was distraught, and he had a hard time coping, only barely managing to keep it together for the kids. But he couldn’t stay where they were, too many memories of Morgan and he couldn’t deal with it. In fact, Casey really couldn’t deal with living in the United States. Their nomadic status thanks to the military, left him with too many thoughts and everywhere he traveled, there seemed to be a reminder of his wife.
So Casey uprooted his whole family and went to a place that neither he nor Morgan had ever been to, but she had always wanted to go, the United Kingdom. After searching for something less hetic than London, Casey settled his family just outside of Hickstead. It was enough of a town where schools and university mattered, but small and quiet enough to not drive Casey crazy. He quickly found work at a mechanic shop, and continued to raise his kids as a single dad. The Caufields have remained ever since.
