The office was quiet, even the garage was quiet. A lull in the typically busy establishment. A sound that Kasey Caufield enjoyed. DOG was laying by the door, appearing passed out by his owner knew better, the second someone walked through the door, the dog would be up on his feet to give a proper greeting. With this moment of peace, he reached over to a desk drawer and opened it, pulling out his personal calendar and flipped it open, studying the dates. He normally used it track stuff when he needed to be absolutely at disposal of his kids, but lately, they have needed him less it felt like. Kasey knew it was because they were becoming adults of their own, but hell if he didn't love them, and he would always be avaliable whenever they needed him. There was also something else he was tracking: his boss's pregnancy.
It sounded and looked a little creepy, when one gave it a first glance, but it was important to Kasey. It meant the moment that Heidi Hunter popped out a living human being, she would be off on leave and the garage would be left to him and Elle McKenzie to run. Yes, the calendar in relation to Heidi felt a little like a dooms day clock. A big fucking read circle around the suspected due date, and it seemed to get closer and closer each day. The man was certain that his boss was asking Elle to be point on watching over the place and making sure the mechanics stuck to their work. After all, the young mechanic deserved it. She had been here for a while, she ought to take a crack at a more leadership role and expand her horizons. However, Elle was also sweet, insanely sweet, the kind of sweet that people might take advantage of, which is why Kasey was certain he would be back up to Elle.
Unlike Elle, he wasn't sweet. Not on the outside at least. He was gruff, silent, lurking in the background like some gremlin or trash panda waiting to pounce on a victim. Kasey didn't allow anyone to fuck with him, and he wouldn't allow anyone, mechanics or customers, to fuck with Elle or Heidi for the matter either. Even if Heidi let him off the hook of playing overlord to the garage in her absence, he knew he would still end up stepping up to the plate. It's what he did. Pulling out some folders now, cerulean eyes poured over supplies lists, making note of what he would have to order soon. It was then that both he and Dog heard the approaching footsteps. As if man and animal were synced, Kasey glanced up now to see none other than Heidi Hunter in the door way, and Dog was up to greet her ecstatically, "What's up, Boss?"
was she dreading maternity leave? not really. she knew that the garage was in safe hands with the staff she had. she knew she could trust them, they were a good crew. even the young ones that people had tried to warn her against hiring, they did their work and they didn't cause trouble. what else could she ask for? she'd asked elle to be in charge while she was gone but she could only do that because she knew that kasey would be there for her the way that he was for her. she didn't need him to do her job, she could do her job as well as any mechanic in the country. but when she'd started this small garage people had been skeptical, men had overlooked her because she'd been a woman and were surprised when she'd done the work on their cars, some had even flat out refused to let her look at them until she'd shown them she knew what she was talking about.
as much as she was capable as the next woman, having kasey and even the young boys there was just an added sense of security when closing in the dark of the nights in winter, in the early mornings and when customers got mad that something couldn't be fixed, that they knew better or when they just didn't want to pay. she refused to be a damsel but she could appreciate a bit of muscle flexing when it was appropriate, how could she not when she was dating the man she was. she wasn't scheduled to work today but she was sticking her head in anyway, she'd just dropped her daughter off at school and the garage had been on her way home. as much as she was supposed to be taking it easy, she'd never been good at that.
she parked her car outside and climbed from the car, pausing a little to smile at a customer as they drove away, hopefully happily. grabbing her bag she headed inside, waving to the mechanic on duty and she walked towards the office. what was the harm in doing an hour or two of paperwork? she stopped when she reached the door though, because it seemed like she'd been beaten to the punch. her smile, wide when she saw kasey, widened when she saw dog coming to greet her. she'd always been an animal person, much preferring them to people most of the time. she bent down as best she could to ruffle his ears. "hi buddy, how's my boy? hey?" she said softly as she rubbed her hands over him. she lifted her gaze to kasey and kept the smile on her face. "i'm here to take over the paperwork."

The second that Heidi decided to greet the Belgian Malinois, Kasey became certain that the dog's tail started going some ninety miles per an hour in wagging speed. A sigh escaped him, "I swear, that dog acts like I never give him a lick of attention when someone enters this office." Granted, he was like this way when they roamed the garage also. That was the one thing about being a dog owner that both humored and annoyed the man, dogs were always man's best friend until a new person entered the room and suddenly you were a day's old chopped liver. He shouldn't complain though, Dog is...well, a great dog, and Kasey knew he should count his blessings that his boss was willing to allow him to bring Dog into work - probably helped that he could qualify as added 'muscle' if needed on the intimidation factor.
Ceruelan eyes watched as Dog tried his best to nestle his face into Heidi's thigh as she ruffled his fur and touched scratched his ears before her dark brown eyes met his, "I'm here to take over the paperwork." Kasey couldn't help but to arch an eyebrow at that statement, "You willingly want to do paperwork?" He asked her now, almost incredulously. He shouldn't be surprised, Heidi was a hard worker and she made sure to be the best in the business given that she was at the disadvantage of being, well, a woman. It was a shitty thought, but Kasey knew that Heidi's gender meant that people thought that they could be dicks to her. He didn't mind watching when stupid customers or parts sellers tried to pick a bone with her, mainly because it was fucking hilarious when she dished back. The man leaned back in his chair, and raised his hands, as if washing himself clean of said paperwork, "Go at it. I'm not going to stop you," he commented gruffly now, before wryly adding, "Jason drive you up the wall today? Because I cannot understand why you would want to be doing the paperwork right now."
