it wasn't to often anymore that he lit up the cigarettes he still kept in the back of his cars glove box, just there in case he needed them. tonight was one of those nights. he was sitting out on the back steps of the house he now called home while the people who lived there with him slept within it. where his family were safe, the kids he could call his own were deep within the safety of their own dreams and the man he loved, so much it hurt to think about at times, was hopefully sleeping without a care. that's what he hoped anyway, he could only hope for so much as he sat outside in the cold, the bitterness of it welcome on his bare arms as he blew the smoke into the darkness before him. the kitchen light that shone behind him lit up the garden just enough that he could see to where one of the kids had left a ball and beyond that there was nothing but dark, nothing but quiet and that's what he needed at that moment.
he'd gotten home just a few minutes before, walked through the house and dumped his stuff quietly at the back door, walked outside and sat down to light up. to decompress and to try and deal with the shit that had happened over the last ten hours of his life. the last call had been the killer, the one that had shattered whatever hope he'd had of ending the shift on a high note and he knew it would yield images he'd never be able to forget. there had been a sense of the unknown when they'd been driving to the call and while it was easy to say he prepared for the worst, he never really could. what they'd walked into had been more than he'd ever been able to imagine it could have been.
he had no idea how long he'd been sitting there, the open door of the kitchen behind him, when suddenly there was a large shadow approaching. he saw it but didn't have the presence of mind to turn, just took another drag of the cigarette as leo's giant of a dog came to sit himself down beside ranger on the steps. normally he'd have ruffled the dogs ears, greeted him a lot better than he could tonight but it didn't seem to matter to the giant fluffball. ranger heard him lay down with a soft thud and a sigh and then there was a heavy head resting on his lap. his mouth twitched just slightly in the corner as he brought his free hand down to rest on the dog's neck, working his fingers into his coat lightly as they sat their together in the cool of the night.

someone had just left their child? ranger couldn't understand how. no matter how often he saw the after effects of a parent not coping, it never ceased to amaze him that it could still happen. of course if it didn't, he and logan wouldn't have had chance come into their lives, but it was still hard to think about a parent just walking away. he could never do that with chance, no matter what happened. he lifted his eyes to match logan's gaze and he was almost sure he was thinking the same thing he was. he reached his hand out to rest it against logan's forearm gently and then he looked over at flynn.
he knew how busy the nurses were, how hard they worked and how while they probably thought the baby was adorable, they didn't really have the time to try and settle a baby, even though he knew they'd be doing an amazing job at trying. "if you want, bring him in here. we'll keep an eye on him and try and get him to settle." he said as he looked back at logan, hoping he wouldn't mind the impromptu offer but it felt like the least he could offer. he might have been useless to do much else at the moment but this, this he could do. he didn't think there would be an issue with policy, he and logan had been approved foster parents of chance before they'd adopted him so legally they could look after him.

aw damon, showing your innocence aren't you :'D we love them, we really really do. logan doesn't talk loud enough to clip his voicebox, but i can see it working for leo and lily.

he couldn't help but laugh as both logan and lexi admonished him for his words about leo but he wasn't worried, it was all in jest. he settled into the chair next to logan and shifted thatcher so he was against his shoulder rather than laid across his arms, this way he could drink a beer if he could convince anyone to get him one now he was settled with thatch. "he'd never risk snapping his nephew." he was sure of that, as rough and tumble as leo could be and as hands on as he could be too, he'd never risk hurting one of the kids. that he was certain about. these kids were the center of the white family's world and it was comforting to know that they'd grow up in that environment.
it was also comforting to know that if anything happened to him on the job, that logan would have the support he needed to help chance and thatcher grow into decent adults. he looked across at damon and couldn't help but laugh again as he asked how he'd gotten sick. he shook his head and raised a hand to point at the horde of children who were still running around chasing each other. "i caught some flu off one of that lot." he said to assure the fellow white by relationship. "it wasn't luke's cooking." hopefully that reassured him. he hadn't been here for the tuna bake saga but it was a well known fact in the house that luke didn't cook.
he grinned as chance joined them and teased his uncle too. he knew that would mean a lot to logan, they had both worried for a long time whether chance would relax into the family. it had taken time and a lot of patience and so much support from logan, but he was getting there. he watched as tae settled next to him and he smiled a bit more before he shifted his attention back to the adults in the group. there was something happening between ashley and damon and it seemed like they were teasing telling the family. if they thought they could drop that tidbit and not explain, he'd like to see the whites let that go. he doubted they could.
he relaxed a little as logan squeezed his hand and agreed they'd talk about it when they were both back at home later. he knew it should be easier for him to get rid of the apartment, it wasn't like he had any doubts about committing to logan, they already had a son together and he couldn't imagine not being part of his life but he just didn't know how to start letting go of the space that had been his escape when a call had been too much, when they hadn't managed to get someone out of a car or out of a house before tragedy struck. he knew he could bring it back to logan and talk it out with him or just fall into his arms and hold him until the what ifs stopped but he hated the thought of bringing it back to the house. it was a good place, it was a great place and while he knew that logan and his siblings had been through a lot, the house was a safe space for them and their kids. bringing horror stories home was something he didn't know how to start doing. although he knew luke did, he took them home but he didn't know how he did it. he knew he'd have to explain this to logan when they talked about it, but he had some time to think of how to word it right.
he squeezed logan's hand softly to reassure him that it wasn't a problem with him. he wouldn't lie to him while he was right in front of him, and he was lying in a hospital bed. plus, he was sure that logan would bury him if he did it again, well maybe bury was a bit strong, but he'd be pretty unhappy with him. when he said it was about the baby, he saw logan relax a lot more and he nodded slightly. it was a heartbreaking cry to need to listen to and he wanted nothing more than to let the baby know that life was okay. he looked at the door as a nurse came in. she looked familiar but he couldn't place her name. "hi flynn." he said with something of a smile as he watched her come across the room to the bed. "yeah everything is fine." he said, knowing that she'd be checking his chart anyway. "we're just wondering, is the baby okay?" he asked, trying not to sound like anything but someone who was worried about the child, because that's all it was. he knew that too the wrong person it might sound like they were questioning the nurses but that wasn't it at all.

he smiled a little at logan's comment and he shrugged slightly. there wasn't a lot they didn't share but he was certain if pressed there would be at least one or two things. he hadn't grown up to be a big sharer really, he had four siblings and if you wanted something you had to fight for it or the younger kids pulled puppy dog eyes on his parents and more times than not they were believed. he'd grown out of that habit when he'd been a teenager and he'd eventually learned sharing was sometimes a good thing. especially when it was with someone you loved, like he did logan. the longer he saw with logan and the longer he talked with him the guiltier he was feeling about keeping this so hidden from him. he'd really thought he'd been doing the right thing but he'd seen the worry, see the fear and he couldn't deny it was eating him up a little inside to know he'd done that.
he smiled a bit more when he finally got a chuckle out of logan and had he been feeling better than he was he might have fist bumped the air but just because he was feeling better didn't mean he was 100% yet. every muscle in his body was aching from what he'd been through in the last few days and it was going to take a few days to go away. "i thought we shared everything?" he teased as logan leaned down to kiss his forehead. he closed his eyes at that and couldn't help but sigh with content. the person he'd wanted there more than anything was there and it just instantly made the situation feel so much better. the room didn't feel as empty as it had and it didn't feel as cold once logan was in it.
he felt logan's hand some to rest over his and he turned his hand over gently, linking his fingers between logan's so he could hold onto his hand gently. he knew they'd need to talk about the apartment but it was just always something that had been there. he did like having it there to go to when he worked late but he did know that he'd need to make a choice about it really soon. they had chance now and he was so settled at the family home. he could suggest that he and logan live in the apartment but he'd never ask him to think about it. not because he thought logan wouldn't but because he thought he might and that meant he'd be away from his siblings and the barn and knowing logan the way he did, he'd be unhappy if he did. "i do always try to message." he knew that wasn't the point though. "i get it though, promise to talk what to do about it over with you when i'm better?" he offered as a solution to now.
as soon as he pressed the button he felt the shift in the room and he saw logan's worry as his hands shifted. "it's okay, i'm fine." he promised, reaching to grab one of his hands again so he could reassure him. he just wanted to know that the kid was okay. there was nothing worse than knowing that a baby was alone and in distress and while he knew that nurses were busy, there should still be someone trying to comfort it. quinn must have finished her shift because there was no way that she'd have let that go on as long as it was. "i just want to make sure the baby is okay." he said as he glanced at the door. if he knew logan as well as he was certain he did, he'd be just as worried about the little tyke as he was. if the nurse that came to him didn't know, he'd see if logan could take a little walk and try and find out.

the sound of the babies cries echoing through the halls toward them were sad enough that it hurt to listen to. he'd spent enough time around his nieces and nephews that he was certain he could tell the difference between a cry for a reason and a crocodile tears and there was nothing fake about this one. they'd talked about babies and more children between them but it had been a little while ago now and they did have chance who was just about as perfect as any kid could be, though ranger knew that had come at a great cost to chance and he and logan were working hard to make sure he felt he was allowed to mess up now and again, that he could have fun and not get in trouble for it. he was getting there but it was slow progress. he brought his attention back to logan and he glanced down at the drip and he grinned a little, looking back up at logan. "nah, these are just my drugs. all mine." he said with a bit of a smile.
"but you never know, if you kiss me you might just get a taste." he teased him a little as he felt himself relaxing a little as logan did. he knew that it would take a little while for logan to really forgive him for today but it had made the most sense to ranger at the time. then he brought up his apartment and he couldn't help but notice the frown that crossed logan's face again. they'd talked about him giving it up a few times but ranger hadn't really wanted to do that. he would admit that it sucked paying rent for it when he didn't use it much but it did have some use still, even if it wasn't very often. he shifted a little and reached to rest his hand on logan's thigh softly. "because i don't like waking you up when i get home at 2, 3 or 4 in the morning. you get up early and i always feel like an ass when i stumble in tired and have to get ready for bed and you stir." he said as he rubbed his thumb against logan's jeans lightly, trying to reassure him.
he frowned a little as he heard the cries again float into the room and he shook his head a little. he couldn't sit there and listen to it for much longer. it was pulling at every heartstring he had and he just wanted to know that the poor kid was okay. his profession was helping people and when he heard someone in distress it just made it all the harder for him to focus. he reached his free hand to grab the nurse call button and he pressed it, hearing it buzz and the light on the bed behind him lit up. "i'm just going to ask about them.."

he'd gotten him there, he knew that. maybe he shouldn't have but it had been a logical point. the people you loved were supposed to drive you a little crazy sometimes. though he would try and hold fast to his promise to no joke about it too much anymore. it was easy to see how worried logan had been when he'd walked into the room and he knew that was his fault. it had made so much sense to him when he'd been telling quinn not to let logan know but now he was sane, medicated and feeling a lot better he could see her point.
he felt logan sit down on the bed next to him and he shifted across so he'd have more room to sit comfortably. when his fingers touched logan's cheek he did feel himself relax just a little. him being there certainly made ranger feel a hell of a lot better. if someone had told him he'd been so settled and happy in a relationship at this point in his life when he'd been a teenager he'd have laughed his head off. he wasn't going to settle down, he'd been one for fun and risk and lots of reward but then he'd met logan and that had flown out of the window because he couldn't look at anyone else now without comparing them to the man before him right now.
"alright, true," he said with a smile as he let his hand fall from logan's cheek down to rest on his leg gently. "might not be the best choice of words." and there was no way he wanted to tempt fate to take him away from the life he had now. it wasn't what he'd dreamed of when he'd been a kid but it was the only one he wanted now. he kept finding himself tuning out to listen down the hall to listen to the baby cry. it was almost heartbreaking to listen to and that was strange to ranger. normally he could ignore crying children if they were nothing to do with him because logic dictated that there would be someone there to care for them but it didn't seem like anyone could settle this kid. "poor kid." he mumbled softly as he brought his attention back to logan.
"well i wouldn't complain if they did spike it, but i promise i don't have those floaty out of this world feelings right now." he said with a slight grin. morphine was usually the only thing that did that to him and he certainly hadn't had any of that today. well that wasn't a great scale. he'd only forgotten once in the house and he'd never forgotten again, it was normally luke that coped that face. "well maybe we should go back to my place till he forgets about it." he was only half joking at that. he still had his own place even though he spent most of his nights at logans with him and chance but some nights when he finished early in the am he just went back to his place to avoid waking anyone at the other house. not that he thought leo would really hold today against him, they all liked to rib him but there wasn't a person you'd rather have on your side and even ranger knew it.

logan glanced out the window as he headed up the stairs to the bedrooms. he could see the kids sneaking around the backyard, all desperate to try and not get hit with the water from the pistols but so keen to drown someone else. he shook his head a little and chuckled as he took the stairs two at a time till he reached his and logan's room. it had been hard adjusting to a newborn, he'd watched logan's family do it time and time again with their children but it was still a steep learning curve. he wouldn't change it for the world though. he walked across to where thatcher was stirring and he leaned down to lift the baby into his arms. "good nap?" he said as he grabbed an extra blanket to wrap around his son as he brought him back downstairs to join in the chaos that was now his family.
as he walked outside he saw they'd been joined by damon, ashley and by the sounds of the kids josh too. he shifted thatch in his arms as he walked back into the fray, dodging children, avoiding dogs as he made ihs way over to where most of the family was sitting and talking. "he doesn't have the attention span to be a chef." he grinned a little as he walked past lexi to sit down in the chair next to logan. "a child sure, but not a chef." he joked as he tucked the blanket closer around thatcher. "though i'm not itching to end up in hospital again, so i wouldn't mind if leo took over the BBQ." he said with a grin as he looked over at the kids to check on them.
ranger smile a little as he took logan's hand and he held onto it a little tighter than he normally would as he watched him sit down on the bed next to him. "if i frustrate you, guess that means i fit in with the family." he really couldn't help himself. "last one, i promise." he said as he shifted a little to make sure there was enough room for logan on the bed next to him. he kept hold of logan's hand as he sat there, his fingers threading through the one person he really needed in the moment. he might have tried to keep it from him to keep him from worrying but he'd felt better the second he'd walked through the door. from the moment he'd met him, he'd wanted logan to be there. there was something about being in his presence that was just calming and gave ranger a sense that everything would be okay.
"oh yeah." ranger said as he finally let go of logan's hand and he raised it to rest his hand against logan's chest. "all you need is an axe slung over your shoulder." he glanced at the drip that still hung from the bed and he shook his head a little. "no drugs, just water." he said with a slight grin. "so if i'm crazy it's all me." he nodded slightly and then he brought his hand up to cross his fingers over his heart lightly. "cross my heart and hope to die." he was momentarily distracted by the sound of a baby crying coming from the hall but he did his best to ignore it, after all it's parents were probably with it and the nurses would almost certainly be fawning over it. "so on a scale of one to leo, how mad was he that he needed to go instead of you?"

he knew he'd worried him, he could see it on his face and he hated the fact that he'd put that look on his face. he didn't like worrying him and this had done just that. but it had also been the reason he hadn't wanted to tell him, because there was nothing really to worry about. at least to him. he knew than if the roles were reversed he'd be just as upset at logan but without falling victim to logic, it was different in his mind. "i call this .. better than before?" he offered but he knew he really should just keep his mouth shut. it was usually how he dealt, covering things up with jokes and trying to make light of situations that might not be so great but he could tell logan wasn't having it and he didn't want to push it too far.
he felt logan take his hand and wrapped his fingers around his, holding onto it tightly as he looked up at him. "you know making light of it is what i do best." he said as he squeezed logan's hand softly. he did get where he was coming from, it wasn't very hard to see his point of view when he'd laid it out so clearly for him and he couldn't argue with it. "i'm sorry. i am." he said as he tugged on logan's hand lightly, trying to get him to sit on the edge of the bed. he shifted over a little to make room on the slightly narrow bed but there wasn't really anywhere to go. it was the worst thing about the hospital beds. "i promise, next time i'll let you know sooner and i'll let you be my knight in shining armour, though i really am digging the lumberjack look." he said, being as honest as he could while not able to help himself with trying to make a little light of it. "but on the plus side, once this drips done you'll be able to take me home."

there was something very uncomfortable about hospital beds. he had always wondered why they didn't make them more comfortable. people often had to spend days at a time in them so why should they be hard as rocks? that's what he was thinking as he laid there staring at the ceiling while he waited for drip in his arm to finish so he could get the hell out of this place and back to his own bed, the familiar chaos that was the place he called home and the person he slept next to as often as he could. he wanted to roll onto his side but the tube in his arm kept him laying on his back and he was getting just a little frustrated with it.
he couldn't deny that he felt 100% better now than he did when he'd pretty much crawled into the waiting room that morning. he was still tired as anything and his body ached and he didn't think he could stomach a steak dinner but toast and water were manageable now and that in itself was more than he'd had in the last day or two. he rubbed his fingers into his eyes as he thought about how he was going to get home. his car was outside but he doubted he'd be in a fine enough state to drive it home on his own, considering he didn't really remember the drive in this morning, he didn't think he should risk it again.
it was then he heard the sound of heavy boots on the floor. it couldn't be, could it? he'd told them he didn't want anyone called. that he'd be fine to get himself home somehow, even if he had to call a taxi or take a bus. there would be some way that didn't involve pulling someone from what they were doing, especially when he wasn't really seriously ill, at least not in his mind. he thought about pulling the iv and taking a dive out the window, luckily it was only a one story window, the perks of being in a small hospital. he didn't have time to make the choice though because the door was suddenly pushed open and there was logan, in all his yard gear glory and had ranger been feeling better, he'd have leapt out of bed to pull logan down onto the bed with him.
instead he fixed him with something of what he hopped was an innocent look and he shrugged a little, trying to sit up a little. "because how else would i get to see you bust in here all rugged, handsome and worried looking?" he tried to lighten the mood a little but he knew that it probably wouldn't fly. he knew how logan worried and he just hadn't wanted to worry him, he'd been handling it. "because i was fine." he said as he let his head fall back against the pillow, giving up on trying to sit up and resigning himself to the fact he couldn't talk his way out of this. "i'm fine. i wasn't dying, some fluids and i'm all good now." he said as he raised his hand a little.
