Auggie couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the should shrug and the way friend slipped out of Brandon’s lips. But he wouldn’t press the matter. Brandon was old enough to figure things out, but no matter the age – people could still be a bit oblivious. Eva felt threatened by the woman. Despite Auggie being a boisterous person, he knew when to keep quiet to observe. It’s like two of the stable hands that think no one knew they hooked up, but Auggie could read their body language when they were together. Could they be any more obvious?
“I think she’s just a young woman who may get jealous of you spending time with people outside of the pod. I don’t blame her, though. She’ll grow out of it, or at least begin to accept that you and Jessie have people outside of just the three of you.” The rain was getting worse, and Auggie picked up the pace. Thankfully, playful neighs were heard and one of the horses was prancing about, leading to a body roll into a mud puddle.
“Well, there’s one. Probably walk up as if to ignore, then see if we hook 'em?”
“No, your dear husband isn’t up to anything. I prefer to live, to be fair,” he laughed. “More of a conversation to have with you, about a gift I want to give you.” That seemed to be the best way to go about it. At least, in his own mind and words. It was better than saying the flat We need to talk. Auggie learned early on, that was never the best phrase to say to someone or be the person receiving it.
He took her hand and caressed it softly with his thumb, giving her the look of a man sickly in love. Auggie stared at her for a few more breaths. Taking in her beauty. “I did very well the past year with work. And I know you’ve been wanting to go back to Rio. So…what about a family trip? As a gift for V-Day?”
He graciously took the sugar cubes, giving Brandon some carrots. Might as well be loaded if needed. “I don’t know which one they’re in – but I know they escaped the top left. They’re probably on the left but could be in one of the closer ones. They like to romp.”
Auggie could hear the rain hitting the sturdier material of his coat. He didn’t think this was time for idle chit-chat, but he could at least humor Brandon since he was helping him out. “Izzy is doing well. She’s looking forward to the end of the year, I think. Classes were a bit more than she wanted from what I remember her telling me. Not home as much, due to work and friends. Ora is also looking forward to the end. She’s been dealing with some snippy parents, but everyone is doing well!
How about you? I hear Eva has been keeping a close on Dr. Thompson when she comes in…I didn’t think she would be interested in that, or would there be another reason for it?” Maybe that was a personal question, but Auggie knew Eva enough that her behavior of that kind was not normal.
He chuckled. “Yeah, I’m sure she’ll be leaving the first chance she gets. I don’t think we’re cool enough to be around all the time,” Auggie smiled. He knew that wasn’t true. Izzy had her own friends of course, but it school kept her busy. Same with work and horses.
“Oh, yes...I’m sure a lot of condoms were bought that day, or at least figured out. I don’t know what it is about school dances that get the hormones running up. Maybe that’s why they always had us dancing arms lengths away when I was in school.” He remembered even holding hands was a moment. Granted, he grew up in the community of marriage before sex, but Auggie never followed that spoken rule. His parents still cared for him, so that was already saying something. Though, they were a bit laxer in their beliefs versus a few other people.
Auggie let Ora’s kiss linger on him, letting his hands feel the curves of her back – and teasingly squeeze her buttocks. “We did. I moved Bean over to Helping Hooves, so she’s not stuck at the Sale yard anymore. I’m still her main rider, but the family that owns the place said she does well around kids. So that made me happy.”
He pressed his lips on her again, pushing her closer. Auggie tasted her for a moment before ending the kiss. “What do you have on your plate for today?”
“Amazing, thank you. Being on foot will be better. If other horses get involved, they will see it as more of a game.” He only knew that from pure experience. Once Auggie did that mistake, it was never repeated again. Granted, he would only tell very specific people this. Call it cruel, but Auggie couldn’t share all his secrets, could he? The younger folks needed to learn the hard way on certain things, but Auggie wasn’t about to watch someone struggle to watch a youtube video on how to tie a proper knot. There were things in life that were easier to be done without the excess of steps.
“Maybe? We could—” Well, the thunder and the sound of rain on the tin roof just nixed the idea of carrying a bucket of food out. “Alright, let's see if we can hide some treats in our pockets…The rain should slow them down. I would rather catch them rolling in mud, than running around,” he laughed. “I’m all ready to drag them in whenever you are.”
There it was the slight demand. But it was one of the quirks that Auggie love about his wife. She knew what she wanted, and always voiced it that way. It was never in a pushing way, Auggie just had to listen properly. It made the holidays easy, as Auggie always wrote down what his wife needed to be done. It was one of the reasons why they now had a magnetic knife holder, and she had a new leather key chain. You know, the small things.
Despite the need to make coffee for the house, Auggie climbed back into bed. Even though Izzy was an adult now, there was still the need to make her life comfortable – especially since she was still at home. It didn’t stop her from independence, but he still liked to care for her and his wife. Everything he did, all the extra hours – was there to help support his family to live comfortably.
“Chilled, were you?” he asked, pulling her into him, his chest greeting her cheek. “You know I have to make coffee my specific way.” It wasn’t specific, he just liked doing it. Made their mornings easier. Ora knew her way around the kitchen, but there were times he wondered if she liked drinking…sludge.
He took her scent in again, making his grip tighten around her. “Did the kiddos last night behave?” Auggie remembered that she wasn’t happy per se about chaperoning children, but if there was anyone there to keep people in line, it was Ora.
Auggie groaned when he came to work. Some idiot forgot to lock a gate properly and now he was stuck calling in two of their most stubborn, Tick and Tilly - notoriously called tweedle dee and tweedle dumb. Both smart in their own way, but together- an awful bonded pair. There was a reason they were still here, as they needed advanced people. If the weather was sunny, Auggie wouldn't be as miffed. But alas, downpour and thunder was rolling in.
He could feel the wind rustle through the windows. Not wanting to be a lone in the tackling of sole stubborn horses, he found the closest person. Which thankfully, was Brandon. "Hey Brandon, can you help me get Tilly in? Well, Tick too..but I think Tilly might be the best one to get in first," he asked, slipping into his thick jacket what wasn't really a rain coat- but the heavy, coated canvas worked just as well.
Auggie was a bit nervous. Not that he was in trouble or anything, but he had something planned for Ora, him, and Izzy. Despite Ora claiming she didn’t talk in her various nap locations, she always managed to sneak in something about Brazil. Auggie, being the loving husband who was extremely obsessed with his wife – laid out a plan. He didn’t purchase anything, mainly because Ora would run him over first. But the idea was there. His business had been booming, and Auggie had been saving a lot in his secret, travel fund.
He woke up to see the space next to him still filled with Ora’s body. Her brown hair was a mess from her moving around. She was the only woman that was allowed to accidentally elbow him in the face. It was still early, and Auggie was off for the day. He turned onto his left side and rested his hand on her hip.
Auggie nestled his face in her hair, taking in her conditioner. He always envied it, maybe because he wasn’t allowed to touch her specialty beauty supplies. At least he wasn’t a 3-in-1. Auggie moved his hand and arm to under his wife’s chest – tempted to touch more, but it was the weekend. He wasn’t about to awaken the wrath of Ora by waking her up earlier than she anticipated.
He lay awake but wasn’t the type to lay about too much. Maybe because he was used to the early mornings. Auggie placed a kiss on Ora’s head before turning over and sitting up. He ran a hand through his hair before moving to get out of bed. But his movement was cut short by a tight grip. She had awakened.
“Sorry, my love, I didn’t mean to wake you,” he whispered apologetically.
Auggie smiled at the cold air caved into his lungs. He was ready for the start of the day. He sat in his char in his tent, nursing a blazing hot coffee. His wife sat next to him, crocheting what looked like another baby blanket. Apparently, a lot of her coworkers were popping soon, so she was quite busy.
People began filtering in, some people stopping by to pick up a business card and a I’ll you later. While he was known for traveling repairs, Auggie sold some smaller pieces like wallets and key chains for things like this.
