Kegan looked at her watch as she sat at her desk. The weather was sunny but quickly turned cloudy. Her father, the ever-super fan of the weather, had told her that a thunderstorm was rolling. For once, maybe the news was right. Or was it her knees? She didn't quite know anymore. Kegan was used to understanding Texas weather. England was still on a learning curve, but at least the animal care was the same as always.
Deciding she was over with the paperwork, for today at least - Kegan grabbed her raincoat. She didn't think she would need it right away, but it was better to have it.
As she stepped outside, the clouds seemed to sense her presence. Her action offended them, making the clouds turn a darker color. Any ounce of light was pretty much gone, and a whistle of a strong wind could be heard through the trees.
Well, shit, Kegan thought. So much for getting her horse groomed. If anything, tomorrow would be a solid grooming day for almost everyone.
Kegan scurried as fast as she could to the offices. She cursed herself for making such a reasonable-sized parking area. As she was about to open the door, Kegan heard the sounds of wet tires. Thankfully, the vehicle didn't have those awful blue LED headlights. But her curiosity kept her at the door - under the protection of the awning. Rain hit the metal roof as Kegan waited to see who this mysterious person was that pulled up. They had a good enough reason to be let past the gate.
Bode Donahue should have realized something was up when the airport presented him with his rental car. It wasn't from this year. In fact, it wasn't last year's model either. It looked as if it was five years old, and when he had questioned the gps inside said rental car, the kid assured him it was up to date. What a sucker he had been. After all, this series of events lead him out to the middle of fucking no where, which quite frankly, he thought only existed in central Florida or Texas. No, it also existed in fucking Hickstead, UK as well. It also didn't help that his phone didn't have signal either.
This is what he got for saying that he would swing by Helping Hooves on his way to Hickstead proper. Bode remembered Yui saying over the phone that their barn was in rural Hickstead, snuggly inbetween the airport and downtown. Yet somehow, the man had been lead astray. Naturally, there were now fucking rain clouds and thunder cracking overhead. His jetlag threatened him, his venti americano loosing its power as these fucking non-LED lights lead the way to no where, "Holy hell. I am going to die out in the middle of no where before Cayenne even clears customs and quarantine." But then, he slowed down to a four way stop, the gps telling him to take a left, and as he did, Bode Donahue thought he might have saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
A fence line that is. With a barn in the distance. Holy shit. The car didn't betray him after all. Bode turned and stepped on the gas now, the little car moving its way through the road which soon turned to dirt. The wind was really howling now, trying to bat the tiny tin can, but it held on. He could hear big rain drops start to hit the roof as he passed by the main gates, not clocking the sign of the establishment. Bode stopped the car, killing the engine now. He couldn't believe he was home free. Pushing the door open, the man got out, nearly cracking his head on the mini coop as he stood. Brown eyes locked in on a red headed woman now, well, between her hair and that bright yellow rain jacket, she would have been hard to miss anyways.
As cute as she was, the sight of her made Bode frown, "You're not Lenore," he started now, "And you're certainly not Yui." A certain amount of dread began to creep up in him, matching the building rain storm that he was stupidly standing in. A crack of lighting woke him from his stupor, as he scurried to join the woman, invading her space underneath the awning of the building, "Sorry. I'm Bode...Bode Donahue...please tell me this is Helping Hooves Horse Sanctuary and Stables."
She was not expecting the handsome Asian man to somewhat barrel towards her. Though to bear, Kegan wasn’t expecting any kind of person to barrel up to her with such determination. The rain was indeed the cause.
He began rattling off names and Kegan couldn’t help but squint at him for a moment with a head tilt. But the names did eventually click in her brain after her reactions were finally catching up to her brain. “Ah yes, I am very much not those two very talented women,” Kegan smiled, evident that the statement was not a lie.
“Nice to meet you Bode. I will have to break your heart and tell you that it is not the place you are looking for. Unfortunately, I believe the rain will hinder your signal a bit. I guess you’ll have to stay and get a cup of coffee or tea as you wait.” Her words came off as a slight demand than a suggestion. Even though Kegan was a well seasoned country road traveler, rain wasn’t the best thing to get caught on. Especially with people who didn’t know the route.
“I’m Kegan Diesel. You’ve stumbled onto Diesel Ranch,” Kegan added, grabbing the knob of the door and opening it to allow Bode in first.
