He managed to get to the barn, despite all the lights. If anything, the eeriness of the faux ghosts added to the atmosphere for keeping quiet. There was loud music coming from the barn, which helped mask the sound of his shoes squelching on the dewy grass. Regan had no idea what time it was, but the smell of fresh food made time go away for a split second.
There was a window where he was tall enough to investigate. Regan wiped away some of the fog from his breath and couldn’t believe his eyes. A line of crockpots filled with pot roast, soup, and queso. Regan could feel his mouth drool, as he pressed closer to the window. He was so enamored by it all, it took him a minute to hear voices rounding the corner.
Regan quickly ducked down and lay still until the voices trailed off. He needed that food and needed some now. There was another window closer to the food table, right above some bundt cakes and other sweet snacks. It wasn’t the meat, but it was better than a granola bar.
The young man crawled along the barn edge. He peaked and there wasn’t anyone that was near. With the lighting and the music, he would be hidden. He didn’t need to jostle anything, since there was an extension cord keeping the small panel open. What luck.
Regan gingerly reached his hand in – and he could feel the soft touch of a bundt cake on his fingertips. “C'mon….” he whispered to himself.
Justin's curiosity got the best of him. He hadn't eaten all day and the smell of food was overwhelming. The teen finished greeting the other guests before sneaking off into the food area. He honestly wasn't going to steal food - just curious to see what they had cooked. It wouldn't be that long before everyone else ate.
His nose led the way, ending up glancing into the crockpots as he made his way through. The dessert table seemed to be in the back corner, which is where it all allowed him to end up. The cakes and brownies looked delicious, but something was out of place. There were fingers reaching towards a slice of bunt cake. At first he thought it was all part of the decorations but a second glance made him realize it was real.
"Hey! Why are you trying to steal food? You could just wait until everyone else eats." The comment was slightly hypocritical as he was also debating stealing a slice or two himself. "I do give you full marks for effort though. If Sabrina catches you, you're in big trouble. Trust me, I'm telling you from experience." The owner's daughter had recently caught him in the barn, thankfully though he was only petting the curious horse.
Regan cursed under his breath as he heard the vocal scolding. He drew his hand back and peeked over the edge of the window. “So? Not like they won’t be missing any kind of food,” he hissed back. He was caught now and grabbed the piece of cake, shoving it into his mouth.
“Clearly, it isn’t a problem if you’re still around,” Regan scoffed - after swallowing the bite of cake. Dang, it was a top-notch piece of dessert. It was homemade. He was sure of it. While it wasn't anything like Sweet Magnolia's, it was still tasty.
His eyes caught the pile of mini pies and grabbed one. He was already caught, and the guy wasn't exactly calling him out or yelling at someone to get rid of him.
Justin let out a soft sigh, he didn't want to rat another hungry human out. He hardly was someone who would tattle - especially to Sabrina. "If you were invited to the Halloween event then there's no need to sneak around here." He didn't recognize the other teen - though he hardly knew anyone that attended.
"You really think someone like me would go tell on the owners? I'm hungry just like you." He entered the room and joined the stranger - serving himself a slice of cake and picking up a fork in a container nearby. "How'd you find out about this place anyway?" He himself stumbled upon the barn a few months ago, wanting to meet some of the horses - in remembrance of his sister. Sabrina surprisingly didn't throw him out - or call the police on him.
The teen took a bite of the cake, the taste of it reminded him of birthday cake - something that he hadn't had since his family got broken up by the police. "Hm, don't think I've had cake in awhile. Are you enjoying it?"
