He grew up mostly only ever knowing the quaint English town with a penchant for horses. He grew up mostly knowing his mom's side of the family, given that they were local to Hickstead while being easily shielded from his father's family back in Mobile, Alabama. While William did his best to try and make Elliot understand that they had different beliefs and that's why they didn't visit them, though the bitterness was hard to keep out and Elliot could catch it. Growing up, he followed in his parent's footsteps in having a mind more suited to creation rather than numbers crunching or science. Being partially raised around a hardware store and watching his parents always on the move to fix, update, or even create new spaces in their house had rubbed off on him. At five, he was already drawing his little ideas made up on paper with crayons and both William and Phoebe worked hard to nature that growth. Hickstead's love for horses soon rubbed off on him as well - not in the crazy horse sense, but in the casual sense that he liked to hang out around them and go for a hack verses spend all of this time perfecting what was needed in the arena or for a judge. On top of it, the horses lead to more exposure of the outdoors that sometimes were untravellable even by human standards. He got an exposure expectantly to his father's side of the family at thirteen when his cousin, Temperance Scott, showed up on their doorstep from America at age 15 and pregnant. She was odd to Elliot, wild but in a different way, and broken. He didn't understand her and her needs. Wasn't that what family was for? And didn't she have her own? Why was she stealing his. But his father had to remind him that Tempe came from a different place, a place very much like William had left because they wanted to deny him the love that he had with Phoebe, so he should try and be understanding. It proved to be a difficult challenge for Elliot, especially after there was a screaming baby introduced to the house, and Tempe was a mixed bag of emotions who ended up needing to go to rehab. It wasn't until he matured and she was out of rehab did he really start to understand what she had been through, and did he grow to see her not as a invader but a family member, both her and her son. Despite the chaos at home and his lack of love for standard schooling, Elliot made it through secondary school and opted for a specialty trade school outside of Hickstead rather than settle for Hickstead University, certain that it wouldn't meet his needs. He sunk his teeth into trade for carpentry, and his trade school had an agreement with a local university to help their students pursue a side degree in architecture if it fit their trade. And while he hated the nuisances of real school work, architecture ended up being different. It fascinated him - mapping, structural integrity, design flaws, and how to avoid them. He didn't always agree with his teachers when it came to creativity, but they passed him nonetheless. Upon completing his degrees and getting his certs, Elliot returned home to work with his parents. He kept himself busy all of those years at Scott's Hardware, learning everything he could about running the store and how to help people - even when he thought they were stupid. But his mind sometimes felt like the work was too dull, and given the amount of horse land in Hickstead, he started his own venture in designing beautiful horse properties for people who didn't board at either of the two major stables in Hickstead. They were smaller, scale, but beautiful and charming nonetheless. And his work did spread, not enough to go out on his own, but it was good pay for him when he did get an offer and sometimes he would sell off his designs to companies to grow his savings. While William and Phoebe didn't mind this, and wanted him to continue to grow, they secretly did hope that it wouldn't cause Elliot to leave permanently and not take over the store when it was time. the role player alias • forever age • n/a other characters • the herd |
