Winter brought a lot of last-minute tree removal. The storms often brought out which trees were the worst to hang around the house, and he was out quite a bit to figure out which trees were the worst. More of a top-down to figure out which ones needed to go first or not.
He was brought out to the Oldaker neighborhood, an area he wasn’t new to. His cousin also lived here, so Lindsay knew the area bit. The house he was called to be a new one. An older couple it sounded, but it was their daughter that called.
After finding the right house, Lindsay pulled up his truck and parked. He grabbed his bag and clipboard to write down all their questions and create a list of what the client wanted him to work on. Lindsay lifted his hand and knocked on the door before stepping back a bit so he wasn’t so up on the client’s face.
She had been quick to usher her parents out of the house along with Sasha - they said something about going out for an afternoon tea. They were also fretting about being home for something, what Diana didn't really catch, because she had been incredibly fast and efficient at herding all three humans out of the door and into the 4WD SVU that only her father's retirement lawyer money could buy and sent them on their way. Nevermind the thawing snow, since they knew how to handle it. Diana had watched them leave, wondering to herself what they could have been fretting over being at the house for, before shrugging it off and returning to the warm in doors. The house was her's now.
A sigh of relief escaped her as she began to close the shades in the living room. She then lit plenty of candles, some incense, and was quick to sit down on her yoga mat, settling in as her phone began to play her meditation. The woman wasn't certain how much time had passed as she worked on her breathing, ignoring the outside forces of the world, and only concentrating on the now of life as some ancient man rattled off: When you realize nothing is lacking, the whole world belongs to you. She repeated the saying, muttering it to herself, when a sharp knock came at the door. Her eyes open, an annoyance playing across her features that her zen and self finding was getting disrupted.
Scrambling up, Diana matched over to front door and flung it open with a force to be reckoned with, "Look, the Vestski's are not-" Her blue eyes fell on the man before her. In fact, she had to look up at him. All six foot two of him with a muscles frame - oh yeah, she could tell how that carhart jacket tightly fit across his body, almost begging to be set free. He had a sharp - and handsome - face, completed with pulled back hair and a beard. Holy fuck. She had nearly been stupid enough to sent him away. Damnit, what were her parents fretting over again? What house appointment? Casually, she leaned against the frame, eyeing him, "Sorry. I'm Diana. Are you here to do work on the house?" Fingers crossed it was something physical.

The voice was a sharp one, almost angry. But all Lindsay did was lift his eyebrows up. The woman that greeted him had a bit of a scowl on her face, kind of cute – but that was just him. But her features softened as she took all of Lindsay in. He used it but it always made him laugh when it did happen. Lindsay knew he looked good, as he worked hard for his physical appearance. His face? He was just lucky for good genes somewhere in the family.
“Good afternoon, I’m Lindsay, with Maple Creek Trees. I got a call to look at some bushes and trees around the property. I guess…kind of a checkup,” he laughed. It was obviously louder than most, one could say rivaling Zeus’ lighting strike. But nevertheless, Lindsay was outdoors so it didn’t matter what level it was – right?
“I believe a…” Lindsay held up his clipboard. “Ms. Diana called to make the appointment.”
She could not help but to watch him. It was hard not to, she just wanted to continuously drink in his face with her eyes. It was a good thing that Sasha was not around, because no doubt, her seventeen year old daughter would have called her out on it and would not have bothered to hide her mortifying tone. But Sasha was not here, which meant that Diana could behave and say whatever she wanted. Mr. Sexy Man Bun soon interrupted her thoughts by speaking again, “Good afternoon, I’m Lindsay, with Maple Creek Trees. I got a call to look at some bushes and trees around the property. I guess…kind of a checkup.” Damn, even his laughter was attractive. It was like a god damn hunk of a unicorn just crossed her path, “I believe a…” Lindsay held up his clipboard. “Ms. Diana called to make the appointment.”
Diana arched an eyebrow at that one. She did? More likely her mother made the call and left her name down since they would be out. Figures. Granted, the woman supposed that for this one time, she would not be angry over this unexpected house appointment. There was some serious snackage here, "Ah yes, that's me," Diana started now, recovering, "I believe the snow storm from a day or two ago split one of the old trees somehow." Maybe it was dead, she wasn't sure. Either way, it was a tree she could see from her deck, "Hold on, I'll show you." The woman side stepped to stick her feet into some Uggs and grabbed a jacket right off of the hook to shove herself into before stepping back out and shutting the unlocked door behind her.
Gesturing for him to follow her, she lead the way now, "So, Lindsay," she couldn't help but to say his name with emphasis, committing it to her memory, "Has the end of the winter storm kept you busy? I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen you in town."

Lindsay quirked an eyebrow but followed her lead anyway. “Yes, there’s quite a bit of dead trees that decide to topple over. My team and I do try our best to get trees looked at before winter comes. Granted, we can get terrible weather any time of the year. But the weight of snow and ice tends to make winter a bit more dangerous.”
He smiled at her last comment. “I find that hard to believe,” he joked. Mainly because Lindsay stuck out. A lot. He was tall, burly, and truly hard to miss. “But I guess we just kept missing each other. Though, I do tend to prefer to be up higher than on the ground.”
It didn’t take long for them to get to the split tree in question. Lindsay could tell it was an English Oak. Old as Diana had mentioned. And it was indeed split, some of it barely holding on by a thread. So he stopped short, noticing some teetering of some questionable branches. “I won’t be able to inspect as close as I’d like, but I can tell we won’t be able to safely remove anything until the whole crew is out. Has this tree been here as long as the house or somewhat younger?”
She listened to the younger man talk as they made their way out to the tree now. Diana truthfully was only half listening to his stance on how the winter has been and how that makes it difficult and dangerous for the trees. The woman was too busy admiring him to fully absorb his words, and her mind kept on dancing around how rusty she had gotten in her flirting skills. Granted, she had been married since her early twenties, so Diana supposed that she could not be too hard on herself.
His playful joke about his height did not go unnoticed by her, and she smiled, "Ah well, perhaps that was my problem. I wasn't looking for a superman like being up in the sky. I'll keep that in mind for the future though whenever I am in town." And the woman was in town a lot, but no need to sell herself out as a detective quite just yet, or that often in town for the matter. At least she knew now to take a better look at the trees and shrubbery though that dotted Main Street.
It wasn't long before they were at the tree, their tracks left in the snow. Blue eyes stared at the oak, it was a little sad to see in this state, "It's fine. I wouldn't want you to get hurt because of this tree," Diana replied now. Although, she was a little begrudged that she wouldn't get to witness Lindsay truly work. Something told her that he might have to reschedule given the tree's state. She just might have to make sure it was another day that she was at the house alone, "It's as old as the house, if not older. I'm sorta sad to see it go." Diana glanced over at him now, trying to figure out how to find a way in conversation beyond the stupid tree.
Funny how she could get a suspect to spill their guts and yet being met with a strapping man was throwing her for a loop, "So, were trees always your passion?" She supposed he kinda looked the part, but Diana can't quite imagine how one gets into tree care and shrubbery. Diana had nothing against it, and bless those people who found passion in it, but the woman could never find herself looking at a tree and going 'huh - i want to make that grow and live forever'.

“Ah is it a childhood tree?” he asked. Most people who were upset about trees falling were ones that had a sentimental value to the tree. But like all living things, the return to earth was always a calling no one could escape. “If you and your household want to save some of the wood for anything, we can do that for you. If the wood is healthy, that is.” There were a few carpenters and artisans around that Lindsay was sure a sign or something meaningful could be made.
“I grew up with it. Dad was in the business for years. I liked trees and learning about them when I was younger. Didn’t get serious about it until a few years ago. I think it’s more of the adrenaline rush I can get from it,” he laughed. “It’s hard work and can take a lot from you physically and mentally. But what person says that they climb trees for work?”
His question oddly prompted a wave of emotion, "Uh, yeah, it is actually." Diana replied now, staring at it. Funny enough, she hadn't even given the tree any thought until Lindsay had brought it up, and all of the memories came flooding back. That tree had always been a constant on the property, and now, it would be gone. The woman wondered how her parents might feel about it, but knowing them, she never thought of them of being the sentimental type, just the practical. Diana's mind must have wandered since she almost didn't register that the handsome man brought up saving the wood, "Oh? If you can, I wouldn't mind that. Just a few pieces for one of those epoxy wood tables that seem to have flooded the internet." While she knew her parents wouldn't want it, Diana wouldn't mind having a table created for her new home, whereever that might be, when she and Josie would move out.
Blue eyes watched Lindsay as he talked now, launching into how he had gotten into the business and growing up. She found herself utterly mesmerized, but not by his story, but simply by him. While Diana knew utterly well that today wouldn't turn into anything, she vowed to herself that she would get a one on one night with this man. A smile graced her lips now, "I suppose not many people can say that, but I'm sure its always a good conversational topic," she said now, "You said you only got into it a few years ago? Does this mean you were doing other things?" Diana knew she was getting into prying territory, but it was hard not to do so when she had the property to herself, although, perhaps he had other appointments as well, "Sorry. I suppose that's none of my business. I should let you get to work." Her gaze went back to the tree one last time, "Do you think you'll be doing most of the work today? Or will you need to come back with your crew?" And Diana could not but hope it would be the latter, for they could exchange numbers.
