She didn't like having to take a dog to the vets. Beth prided herself and her Kennels on their animal management, and her expertise. It was a rare occurrence, generally the dogs were healthy and Beth and Logan were careful to ensure the dogs didn't suffer any injuries or illnesses. Not only because this was her business and livelihood, but also because she loves animals, particularly dogs, and respected them. She was a good trainer, and she had a decent base knowledge of ailments. She never mixed dogs without supervision, she was careful depending on the dog's temperments who mixed with who. They rarely had any fights or similar, naturally it happened occasionally - a dog correcting another - but she had an excellent reputation for a reason.
Today, she'd brought one of the longer term boarders in to get checked out. She'd taken young Dash on a walk yesterday and everything fine, and then again this morning as per her routine, and the pup had begun limping quite soon into it. She'd picked him up and carried him home, no matter the two year old Lab was getting heavier by the day as he filled out. Once back, she'd used her grooming table to sit him down and check through his fur and his paws for any obvious reason for the pain. Nothing she could see but he yelped twice, and with nothing obvious, she worried he might have done something serious. So she found herself sat in the vets with Dash sprawled on her lap, his big eyes looking a little sorry for himself as she waited to see who would be available to help her today.
Ila yawned and sat up in her bed, giving her three legged baby a loving scratch. “Better get the day started before I’m late.” She smiled at Sparrow and headed into the bathroom to get ready to head into the office. With her hair braided and a pair of scrubs on she grabbed her tennis shoes and headed out the door. The coffee pot was already brewing her coffee, she headed to the back door and let Sparrow out, pouring the coffee in her travel mug she packed her lunch and Sparrows breakfast, letting the dog in she grabbed the bagel that was on the counter and her keys. Grabbing Sparrows leash she opened the door to the garage and loaded the dog and everything into her truck before taking a bit of her breakfast and shutting and locking the door to the house. A short drive later and she was pulling up to the clinic, clipping the leash to Sparrow she grabbed her bag and coffee and headed in. Sparrow went right under Ilas desk and laid down in her bed, Ila opened the container with the dogs fresh dog food and set it down so she could eat. “be good little one I have to go and see my first patient.” Patting the dogs head Ila grabbed the file and headed out. She saw a younger lab on the women’s lap and gave a friendly smile. “hello I’m Ila and you must be Beth and this here must be mister Dash.” She spoke, looking at the dog on the women’s lap, “is he able to stand so we can get a weight on him?” She questioned.
She continued to entertain the young pup with head scratches, being sure to get her nails in behind the ears as the animal liked most of all. She gave a soft chuckle as he let out a low growl of enjoyment and tilted his head to offer Beth a better access. "Well, at least you seem less sorry for yourself now." She murmured, allowing herself a little smile to see him looking better. She loved the dogs, every single one of them, whether they came in for five minutes or five weeks, and it was always a worry when something happened or something wasn't right for them. It wasn't even the fact that they weren't hers, it was just that she cared. Dogs had been her life for as long as she could remember, one of the many constants, and they were her sanctuary.
Beth glanced up at the sign of movement, seeing a file in one hand and assuming that this woman must be the vet. A quick look to the clock showed that it had been a pretty quick turn around time since she'd walked in to being seen, which was always nice. “hello I’m Ila and you must be Beth and this here must be mister Dash.” She automatically smiled in response, taking an instant liking to the woman. "Yes it is, nice to meet you," She said, confirming both questions there even though they weren't exactly that. “is he able to stand so we can get a weight on him?” Beth gave a nod, "Yeah, should be okay to do that - he suddenly started limping on our walk and was unhappy to put weight on the paw. I did take a good look but couldn't find anything obvious," she explained as she carefully - and somewhat awkwardly - lifted the pup from her lap. Dash looked a tad put out, glancing around with those big, baleful eyes as he was taking from the warm and safe place and placed gently on the floor. He stood, a gangle of long limbs, for a moment and then shuffled, lifting his sore paw after a few moments of placing weight on it.
Ila watched as she put the dog down he stood on all fours before lifting the one. Hmm she thought, “alrighty then let’s get a weight, I’m glad to hear that you didn’t see anything to obvious and just taking a glance at him standing then lifting the paw I don’t see anything to obvious yet either.” Ila wrote the dogs weight down and brought them back into a room. She listened to his heart, chest, checked his temp and then took a feel of his body all the way down to the paw of question. She squeezed it and felt but nothing felt broken, standing she looked to the women. “ Well nothing feels broken so I would say he has sprained it and may have also bruised the tissue, so a deep bruise that we can’t see, I would still like to take an xray to see how bad it is.” She told the women, “either way he will be going home with some pain medication , a splint and strict instructions for rest for the next few weeks, he shouldn’t be playing or jumping and leashed walked until he is starting to use it more.” She gave a smile and wrote some more things down in the dogs chart, “ alright kiddo should we go get an xray of that leg for mom? My techs are really nice.” She spoke to the dog.
Beth watched the vet for her reaction to the animal, knowing well that you could judge how things were looking based on the reactions another person had. People's thoughts were very often on their face, even if it wasn't very loud. At least the vet wasn't giving the 'this is something really bad' look, with Beth couldn't help but feel relief about even though they still weren't sure on the issue yet. “alrighty then let’s get a weight, I’m glad to hear that you didn’t see anything to obvious and just taking a glance at him standing then lifting the paw I don’t see anything to obvious yet either.” Beth nodded in reply, scratching the animal gently behind the ears to try and keep him calm as the vet spoke.
Once the weigh in was done, she helped the animal back into the examination room, watching quietly as the vet continued her work. The dog gave a little whimper at the squeeze of his paw, but it wasn't much of a reaction and Beth frowned slightly. “ Well nothing feels broken so I would say he has sprained it and may have also bruised the tissue, so a deep bruise that we can’t see, I would still like to take an xray to see how bad it is. either way he will be going home with some pain medication , a splint and strict instructions for rest for the next few weeks, he shouldn’t be playing or jumping and leashed walked until he is starting to use it more.” Beth nodded as she listened, taking it all in. "Okay, well I guess that's good news at least." Hopefully if it wasn't broken then it wasn't anything too awful and a few days of rest would help. "It'll just be keeping the boy calm for a few days that'll be the hard part, he loved to play." But if it was for his own good, she would figure out a way.
“alright kiddo should we go get an xray of that leg for mom? My techs are really nice.” She smiled, at least the vet was nice and had a way with dogs. She had expected more dramatics but so far things had been pretty relaxed which was the best situation. "Thank you, shall I wait here or ...?" She asked, unsure if she was to come with them or go back to the waiting room or what.
