tugging her jacket closer to her, she couldn't help but feel the cold wind break through the bare and worn spots it was covered in. it was the thicket jacket she had though and she could hardly walk around town with the ratty sleeping bag she was using at the moment. it wasn't cold enough to kill her but she was a little worried she might lose a finger or two. she cupped her hands around her mouth as she blew onto them, the warmth fleeting and then gone after a few seconds. she wished she was back where she'd been sleeping, she'd found a spot under the stairs in one of the university halls, tucked away from the wind and out of view unless someone was looking for something. but she'd run out of food and the canteen staff were starting to notice the food she was taking, so she needed to lay off the kitchens for a while. that left one option for her today. the farmers market, she knew that stock would be coming in about now, people would be loading it into the stalls and some of the trucks and cars would be left unattended.
it wasn't that she wanted to steal, it was needed at this point. she couldn't very well front up and ask for food with no money, she'd get laughed at and she couldn't starve to death. she needed to stay alive so she could get her brother away from her mother, that was her main focus, helping him somehow. she couldn't do that if she was dead, or in jail so she knew she needed to be really careful. she waited across the road from the markets as work got started, spending a few moments working out who was going where, what food was in what trucks and what would be easier to grab and keep hold of if she needed to make a quick break for it. she took her chance when she needed to and half ran half crept across the road, scrambling into one of the trucks that she'd seen jars of food coming out of.
It was most definitely a risk. It was a big fucking risk. But needed to eat something, something that wasn't going to hurt him. Everything so far that he'd had the fortune to eat had come back to bite him.
But now he had a chance - the food trucks. He didn't care where the food was going, but he was getting desperate. He watched the workers, watched how they came and went. He even looked for cameras, but he couldn't see any, not that it really mattered anymore.
Waiting for a break, he scurried across the open space to one of the trucks and moved inside it, heading straight for the back section, hiding behind some crates as he began looking at what was on offer.
she'd made it. she'd made it into the truck and so far no one had seen her. that meant she had a few moments of peace before she had to high tail it out of there. but she only needed a few moments. she could grab what she needed, what she could and what she knew would last more than a few hours outside of the fridge. that was one of the hazards of sleeping under some stairs at the university, there was no way she could store anything that wasn't able to just sit there. which meant living on a diet of mainly bread and things that wouldn't spoil but when she had a full stomach she didn't care what was filling it, it was saving her from too many nights from going to bed on an empty stomach. she used the flashlight she'd brought with her to look through the crates and she started going through what was there.
that was until she heard the sound of footsteps outside the truck and her eyes widened. they shouldn't be back yet, it was too soon. she ducked down quickly out of sight, tucking herself behind the crate she'd been looking for and she just remembered to click the flashlight off before someone else was entering the truck. she kept her mouth closed tight so she wouldn't make a sound breathing and she waited. they wouldn't be here long, they didn't take long in the trucks when they came back to them. so she only had to wait.
until she heard rummaging in the crate that she was hiding behind. if they moved it, she'd be caught. she could feel her heart pounding against the wall of her chest and she gripped the flashlight tight in her hand as she readied herself. running now rather than being caught was best. that way she'd have the element of surprise rather than the other way around. she took a quick quiet breath to steal herself before she leapt out from where she was hiding and she did her best to push past the person so she could get out of the truck, fully ready to wallop them in the head with the flashlight if she needed to.
Cam was content to filter through the available cans, taking his time. Even if he was caught, he had plenty of get up and go, not to mention he was not the sort to go quietly anyway. He was putting in more of a fight now.
He stopped, his street-senses beginning to kick in. He couldn't say what it was that made his warning alarms start going off, but he froze all the same and strained to listen. It felt almost too quiet as his breathing slowed. He was almost worth having around as a sentry some days as he quickly worked through the soft noises around him. Road, cars. Wind, leaves skittering. No animals, he couldn't hear any dogs on patrol.
And then he was knocked back with a thud, offering a faint grunt as he toppled back. He was stunned for a moment before he recoiled and regained his bearings, eyes wide in their sockets as he stared up in the dim light at the individual. He was so confused, a girl? He tilted his head left and right, trying to understand just was going on from his position on the ground. She was intimidating with that thing in her hand, but he looked directly at her face - puzzled and unsure, and oddly not all that hostile either.
