Emelia looked up when. Then sun's path was broken. A smile crossed her lips as she stood up. “Not long at all!” She wrapped her arms around him, giving him a small kiss. It was a bit more shy in nature, as her affections with Kasey were stronger in private. Emelia wasn't against PDA, but she still felt like a school girl with her first relationship. Plus, she liked having certain things just for the two of them. Letting people guess or talk about.
She released him. “Let's start with some coffee and then maybe the leather store?” The store didn't carry a lot that Em would use herself, but the sheaths and other small goods would be great gifts for her staff. As a thank you for all their hard work.
Emelia was impressed that she had made it downtown without any issues. Driving was always a hard task to think about, mainly because she had to be so super aware. If anything, she had always gone into town while running errands with someone who had all senses. But today was different. She and Kasey had decided to treat themselves to some time to shop for loved ones before the massive crowds came through.
She had texted him that she would meet him in front of Sweet Magnolia’s. They had chatted about eating there first but opted that eating before shopping would make them a bit more sluggish, mainly from the heavy foods. But since the restaurant was a decent middle point for the two in the sense of downtown, it was a good spot.
Em found a bench to sit on and began scrolling through her phone – looking at the list of everything she had to purchase. She also had to think of a way to present Kasey’s gift to him, as well.
Sure, I’ll get you water. Emelia, had plenty to give, and the water here was crisp and refreshing. I have maps of both, so I can bring you both. Emelia walked off to the kitchen to grab the young woman her water. Once it was delivered, Emelia walked to the office where she found the maps. After grabbing a pen and a highlighter, she walked back out to the table where she had left Emelie.
Okay, she started, grabbing the map of the campground first. You walked in through here. Emelia marked the entrance where the young woman came in through with an x with the pen. You came in off the Cotton tail loop. Emelia took a highlighter and highlighted the trail on the camp map since it was on the border. She also took the highlighter and used it on the trail map as well.
The Cottontail loop comes off the meadow loop called Foxglove. Does this all make sense so far?
Emelia nodded in agreement. Sometimes you just must find the right people, she responded. She knew all too well the importance of the right people. It was one of the reasons she was able to escape the person she did. Her family never left her, they never judged her. They were there, holding her – helping her. The professional ice world probably could care less, but that was behind her now. Emelia was happy, albeit still a bit jumpy, but could anyone blame her?
Nice to meet you, Emelie, I’m Emelia. Thank you, it’s been a labor of love – but it is well-visited. Hopefully, you can come and explore when you get your bearings, Emelia smiled. Can I get you anything to eat or drink? It may take me a moment to get the map situated.
Emelia took note of what the young woman was giving her. She was headed south then, but then turned west onto her property. Despite not being someone who had been around too long, Emelia still had a decent sense of direction. The skill was needed for what her lifestyle was.
A soft smile crossed her lips. Okay, I know exactly where you came from then. It shouldn’t be difficult to get you back where you’re needed. She would happily give a map out since she liked having them accessible.
Do you like it? Working at the barn, I mean? she asked, a bit curious. Emelia hadn’t really interacted with horses that much but liked the animals enough. Being near the trails, Emelia knew the correct order and way to handle riders. Nothing to spook, and to let them pass. Her dogs had been quite good as well.
Emelia shook her head. No, no it’s fine! I was almost done, anyway. She really didn’t allow the young woman to disagree with her any further, a signal to just follow her. Emelia turned and began walking towards the outdoor kitchen. Despite the butchering, it was clean. The carcass of the pheasant was in the sink and partially cut up. But the finishing work could wait.
Emelia carefully placed the bird into a large pot and slid it into the large fridge. So you work for the barn? Emelia asked, after taking off her apron and washing her hands. She took a seat on one of the benches. You’re not too far off from the main trail. Looks like you took a left turn if I remember correctly since you showed up on the west side. I do try my best to label my line so people don’t get lost. But I guess I should do a perimeter check! In all honesty, Emelia didn’t mind too much when people got lost. It was just when they got defensive and refused help. Do you remember what kind of landmarks you noticed while you were out?
She watched as the woman dismounted and settled for a moment. She signed back, making Emelia feel a wave of relief. It made things a lot easier. Emelia nodded. Oh, of course. No, nothing massive. I was just butchering a pheasant. Maybe that was a bit too much info, but she could at least explain why she looked the way she did.
Most of my patrons are out for the afternoon until dinner, so there won't be a lot of traffic to spook your friend there. If you give me a moment to finish what I’m doing, I can help you find your way. Do you need anything to eat? Emelia could at least offer some type of food. Traveling always made her famished.
The winter air circled around Emelia as she began working on the campground. She had a lot of people that were coming in, despite the chill and light flurries. Many of them were families, something Emelia loved. Seeing children enjoying the outdoors was always welcomed. Plus, with a small lake nearby – it meant some great ice skating and fishing.
As she was undressing a pheasant, her ears picked up her dogs barking at movement. It wasn’t the friendly, greeting bark they had. Almost as a warning. A frown crossed her mouth. After a quick wash of her hands, keeping the bloody and feathered apron on – Emelia followed her dogs.
She found them, Tommy and Lola -standing their ground at a woman on a horse. Emelia whistled and her dogs sat. Her face was calm, wondering why a rider was into her property line. Emelia was used to hearing horses trail by, but many often avoided the grounds. Maybe she was a newcomer or a tourist? Or the signs Emelia put up couldn't be seen or ignored.
“Hello,” she greeted, in both voice and sign. It was rare that Emelia ever talked, but she didn’t know if this person was hearing or not. “Are you lost?” Emelia hoped that was the case, though being covered in bird guts didn’t make her look any better than a stranger on a beast.

She was born to two hearing parents, making her the oddity of the three Bordeaux children. Growing up, she was seen as odd by her peers and neighbors, as the community of one thousand people was superstitious. While no one was very outspoken about it, Emelia could tell people wanted to avoid her.
The young girl found comfort at home, watching her mother and grandmother prep daddy’s catch and hunt. Her siblings had friends, while she had the great riverway that they lived on. Despite not being able to hear, Emelia found love in following her dad on his gator hunts and noodling excursions. Cory always said that she was the perfect child as she could never repeat the curse words that dropped from his lips when a gator escaped.
Emelia’s life kind of changed when a community center opened an ice rink. To kind of bring the aspect of ice hockey to the parish. Off to see this newfangled thing, the Bordeaux’s went over. Her siblings struggled, but Emelia appeared to be a complete natural. Her momma claimed it was the balance of standing on the family rackety schooner. Emelia’s natural ability caught the eye of a local coach, curious to see what the young girl could muster.
It was a trial, and difficult situation – as Emelia had a hard time understanding and paying attention. While she was a solid visual learner, the lack of hearing music made her off-beat – frustrating her. Anna, her grandma mentioned getting cochlear implants. Her friend Greta had received some later in life, convinced it was a gift from God the ability to hear again. Naturally, the implants were expensive – Emelia had to wait five more years to receive them through a grant.
Once they were in, Emelia’s ice-skating career skyrocketed. No one could believe a Creole girl from the Bayous of Louisiana would make it so far, so quick.
NIGHTMARES BEGIN
At the age of twenty – Emelia met Lawrence, a fellow ice skater. The two hit it off and were married two years later. Everything was sunshine and roses before tragedy struck. While away during a show, Hurricane Katrina struck havoc on the Louisiana coastline. The small-town Emelia loved was lost. All the memories and the people she loved, were gone.
Her siblings survived as they were far from the area, but both her parents and her grandmother were returned to mother nature. The tragedy flipped a switch in Lawrence. It was as if the man was playing nice, knowing his in-laws were fully capable of knocking him out. Now that they were gone, he had Emelia in his talons.
Their marriage became loveless, and it was now about all appearances. The scores had to be high. The money had to keep flowing in. Emelia became exhausted but couldn’t run. Lawrence had a noose around her neck, which she didn’t know if she could wriggle free.
Things became worse when Emelia learned she could not have children, due to a late diagnosis of PCOS and Endometriosis. Enraged, Lawrence became physical. Emelia’s siblings had no idea how bad her situation was until there was news coverage about the great Emelia Bordeaux having her home raided and being found barely breathing.
FREEDOM
At age forty, Emelia was able to escape. The divorce was finalized, but not without consequences. She lost her home and her career. But she had her freedom and her family. Emelia followed her siblings to England, where they had both moved for their careers. One was in Brighton, and the other in Hickstead.
It took her a moment to settle, a bit wary of people finding out who she was. But after a year, Emelia was ready to make a life change. Wanting to make nature accessible to all people, she opened Fox Meadow’s campground. It was a place where people could cabin, yurt, or tent camp. A labor of love that filled her heart and kept her busy. She was also able to get a half hysterectomy, to help ease the pains of Endo. While she can’t carry a child, Emelia gives all her love to her nieces and nephews.
She still fears Lawrence will find her and try to rope her back into his darkness. But for now, she’s ready to relax and maybe feel settled and happy.
