overall personality • Carmen is cold and harsh on the outside for the world to see, bearing his tattoos and scars as trophies. He's not someone who likes to bother with the little bits of bullshit, always looking to the next fight, the next score. But underneath it all, Carmen is actually quite kind and gentle. He has learnt to compress his feelings and ignore them, though it can turn ugly at times when he hits breaking point. He's hard to read in public, tricky to pin down, almost impossible when it comes to commitment and labels. The second someone tries to shackle him, he's off in the other direction.

overall history • Carmen's life has always been one hell of a shit show. Born second into the Salvadore family, life was not always simple and straight forward. He was a mildly troublesome baby, waking with colic in the night and having terrible teething problems. His father was not an easy man to love, but he found it easier to relate and love his mother. He was a momma's boy from the get go. Things got harder when his newest brother was brought home, and whilst he was ok with a new sibling - excited even - he still sought out his mother. He doesn't remember much about that moment, though he would be taught it in later years.
At four years old, he got a belting of a life time when he asked about his mother. It was the first time he truly felt his father's wrath, and it would not be the last. Even when he tried to interact with his little brother, his father was quick to separate them. He never understood why he was not allowed to play with him, why it got him in trouble and asking why only served to get him into trouble.
All the way until six, he tried to engage with his younger sibling, but it was met with fists and being sent to his room. When Deimos got beaten the first time, he watched it unfold. It seemed so much worse than he'd ever felt, so when he asked his dad nicely not to do it again, he was given a front row stage to fear. From that point on, Carmen withdrew into himself. He tried to reach out to his younger brother, tried to be there for him, but his father always ruined it for them. Eventually out of fear, he stopped though he sorely wanted to know his younger sibling.
When his step-mother came into the picture, he hated her. It didn't seem fitting for someone else to walk on into the family, and even more wrong when more siblings. He could never fully understand his step siblings or mother, nor did he want to accept them either. He clashed with his older brother more often than he got along with him and picked on his step siblings like crazy. It got him into trouble more often than not, but Carmen didn't care.
As time went by, he learnt to remove himself from conflict, to protect himself against what was going on in the house around him. The way his father reacted towards Deimos, to himself and his other siblings. He found it easier to detach himself from the world around him. When he got in trouble he accepted it and rarely fought back, and when he did, it was never nice to witness. His father was the Devil as far as he considered things, but he stayed his tongue. He knew speaking up would achieve nothing and make things worse. He was distant with his family as much as he wanted to break up the fighting, the want to put himself between his father and brother. He wanted to, but never found the strength to do it.
He hid his enjoyment of dance and gymnastics in school, making sure those things remained far out of the reach of hell. He wanted nothing more than to keep his interests his own. He ad good grades despite rarely even studying or bothering with a lot of his classes, maintaining that aloof and distant attitude, even when he was offered help by brushing things off in a smart-assed manner. He moved out of the house when he was eighteen, landing himself a bus-boy job that scrapped him through, unable to sit by and watch. He just barely scraped by his home to make sure no one was dead, but his visits were fleeting lest he get roped into bullshit.
He was 20 when the phone call came through that his father had died from some self induced over dose. He wasn't all that surprised and despite his brother's protests, he reached to Deimos and told him the news. He knew Deimos probably didn't want him bothering him, but he tried to make an effort. He didn't bother turning up to his father's funeral, he had try outs to attend. However, in the midst of trying out for dance academies, he also found himself wrapped up in a gang. Violence was nothing new and it was a way of keeping himself busy. However, it was not the most satisfying being on the low rungs of the gang, and with the threat of cops hanging around, Carmen saw a chance to cause chaos.
The gang was all too sure of themselves, boasting about their next hit and Carmen took that as he chance to get off scott-free and cause hell. He handed over names, hideouts, stashes, what they had in their kits, everything in return for complete freedom, even turning a deal that would see him hand over any gang he entered. He was fine with that, but there was only so far he could take it. Going informant brought him a lot of pain and suffering, but he endured. He had nothing to lose. He danced of a day, fought of a night, limped home to do it all again. He earned his nickname Grimm for how ruthless he proved to be, near killing a fellow gang member over choice words he would never dare repeat.
Between all the fun and peace, things would have to catch up and one gang he fell in step with was one that knew he was a rat. They really screwed him over, leaving him with lasting injuries that would alter his career path. His desire to go professional dancer was shattered when his left foot was partially crushed and some of his muscles were torn. When medical professionals got to see to the damage, they told him that they could repair it as best they could and fuse several bones back together, squashing his professional dance wishes.
Now after considerable time, he has gone back to education to be a nurse. Not what he originally wanted, but he could understand the importance of them and it would still be a way to move things forward. He was still prepared to do the illegal fights and tell on them, but he made sure that his studies came first.
