Emma got off work at the local Hickstead Farmers’ Market. It was almost dinner time, but the air was warm and felt nice when a breeze blew across her way. Emma had always enjoyed the outdoors. Unfortunately, she wasn’t extremely familiar with the area just yet and hadn’t picked up lessons at any stables or barns. Therefore, her choices for an evening of outdoor enjoyment was limited, at best.
Emma had taken the time - several times - to look up Hickstead online using the various map apps available. She had noticed a park on the map and had made a mental note many times to go check it out. It might be a nice place to hang out with a friend, to take a dog for a walk - if she adopted a dog - or even just a nice place to sit and read or reflect on life.
Emma parked her truck and hopped out. Gosh it’s beautiful outside, she thought to herself. She slipped on her backpack full of goodies and started making her way to the park. She had noticed a pond listed on the map and chose to go there first. She saw the sun reflecting on the water and lots of ducks swimming around. She smiled softly and found a bench nearby. Emma took out her picnic blanket and outdoor cushion and pillow she’d drug with her, setting herself up for a few hours of calm enjoyment…

Emmett needed a break from the office. His case load was finally winding down - so much so that he could actually start leaving the office for his lunch break. Renee had packed him a homemade lunch and it smelled delicious by the waft he got while getting ready that morning for work.
As the Pond was within walking distance, Emmett took advantage of the beautiful Spring day and headed outside, saying goodbye to his employees before he left the office. He had his eyes on an empty bench - the ducks would be welcome background noise compared to the silence of the office. The older man noticed a young woman close by - he sat down on the bench by himself and opened his bag - pulling out the pasta salad his wife had made.
"Nice day for a picnic if I do say so myself. Do you do things like this often?" He didn't mind being outdoors - though going on a hike or swimming in a lake wasn't really his thing. Emmett pulled out his cutlery and chose the fork, starting to eat the creamy pasta salad while he began watching the ducks and their ducklings.
Emma was in love with the weather today. She had chosen a few books to bring today that were now sprawled out on her blanket: Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and Emma (her favorite, of course), a rancher romance novel, a book about touristy things to do in England on a budget, and good ole Charlotte’s Web. She wasn’t sure what she was in the mood for, so she’d brought a variety.
Emma had gotten distracted, as usual, and was looking up at the clouds moving slowly, the book Emma laying lazily off to the side, open, as its pages waved gently back and forth each time a breeze blew by. Emma definitely didn’t hear the man walk nearby or settle into the bench, so it was no shock she gave a small squeak of surprise when the man spoke. Emma glanced over at the man sitting on the bench next to her, eating what looked to be a nice lunch.
Emma breathed a sigh of relief and giggled to herself as she believed the man to be of no harm to her. Emma happily twirled herself so she was facing the man, but refused to move from her spot on the blanket. She spoke in a happy, bouncy tone, her Tennessee twang shining through as she babbled on… “Oh, absolutely, sir, I believe in getting as much fresh air as possible. Momma and Daddy always said fresh air was the best thing for the body and soul. To be honest, we didn’t have a whole lot of “indoor’ toys growing up. Not for lack of money or anything, just because we were encouraged to ‘go outside and play’ quite a lot, and we did. My favorite things to play with growing up were my siblings, my cousins, my animals… not my dolls or my cars or anything like that. What about you?”
