It felt odd for Tenaya to be away from the Ranch. She decided to take her afternoon off and head to the outdoor pool. The woman packed a bag with a towel, coverup, water bottle and a snack - heading into the pool area. She paid for her entrance and headed into the change room - changing into her light blue swim suit and locked up her bag with her clothes and shoes in a free locker. The woman took a deep breath and headed to the pool deck. She set her bag down and pulled out her water bottle, taking a sip before setting it down next to a free deck chair.
She brought out her towel and laid it across the back before heading into the pool, dipping her toes in first to test the temperature. It seemed like there were a lot of people at the pool - enjoying the last few days of summer. After a few moments, she kept going in - the nice cool water feeling nice after a hard morning of helping with barn chores.
It was hard to believe that summer had come and gone - the long days would be coming to an end along with the warm weather, traded in for the typical Hickstead Fall. Roisin Malloy didn't mind the incoming weather, but she would miss the summer time, if only for the chance to show off. Fall was also the busiest time of year for the Malloy Family due to the apples. Apple Picking. Apple Canning. Apple everything. The farm store got crowded as well, which meant more work for her and less time to hang around with her university friends or downtown. Perhaps that's what annoyed the young woman the most.
There was nothing that she would be able to do about it though - until she graduated and went out on her own dreams, Roisin was stuck working with her family. Some days she didn't mind, given they were her family and despite their differences, she loved them, but most of the time, Roisin didn't want to be there. She just didn't have the genes, it skipped her, maybe because genetics knew she was the end of the line. If there was one thing the young woman was good at though, it was shrugging off her responsibilities. So, she was off to the pool with a big travel bag stuffed with her towel, a huge water bottle, some snacks, and a new book to enjoy for the time being.
Liam wouldn't give her the truck, so she had nagged and annoyed him until he caved in to at least give her a ride to the pool. Getting out of the car, she said her good byes and walked off. The smell of chlorine hit her, along with sunny skies to warm her body. Roisin couldn't wait to strip down to her bathing suit. Blue eyes were taking in the empty lounge chairs, when she caught a familiar face who had just left her stuff and dipped into the pool now: Tenaya Holland. Roisin wasn't friends with the ranch hand per say, but she knew her well enough from the bulk apple buys for treats for the horses and cows, "Tenaya!" She called out now, stepping up to the edge of the pool, "Guess I wasn't the only one who wanted to enjoy the last of summer. Didn't know that the ranch let you people escape the boundaries."
Tenaya wasn't expecting to run into anyone she knew. She tended to be too much of a workaholic to make friends outside of the people she worked with. The woman continued into the water, stopping as the water hit about knee height.
She heard her name called by a familiar voice, which made her turn around. Placing her hand on her forehead to shield the sun from her eyes, she recognized it as Roisin. "Hey! Long time no see. I ended up finishing my ranch work earlier than I thought today so I thought I should show myself in public for once." She began heading towards the other woman, stopping as she reached the edge of the pool again.
"What did you say to your family to get out of working today? Or is it because you start school again soon?" She didn't know the Malloy family well enough, though they all seemed nice. Tenaya tended to buy her share of apples and carrots for the ranch horses, but mostly for her own. "How have you been?" Of course she started a conversation about work first, it was something the woman needed to work on when it came to talking to people in town.
She must have caught the other girl by surprise, given her awkward turn in the water and then shielding her eyes from the sun. Roisin seemed to be doing that a lot lately, but at the end of the day, it never hurt anyone. As the recognition on Tenaya's face became apparent, the young woman beamed her a smile, "Well, the town is honored to see you outside the confines of the ranch!" The ranch hands always felt like unicorns out in the wild, it felt like it wasn't often that Roisin spotted one. She got it though, they had everything they needed at the ranch, so why leave? At least this time, it was outside of buying a ton of apples.
Laughter bubbled up in her when Tenaya asked her how she managed to get out of work this time, guess her reputation followed her around. Whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, Roisin couldn't decide. But she knew well enough that Tenaya Holland didn't mean anything by it, "I got up at the crack of dawn to help out in the orchards, so I figured after a few hours, I could barter my way out of it." She probably had whined a bit too much, so her parents set her free for the day, but hey, Roisin knew she had put in some good, hard labor on their account. The least they could do was let her soak and sunbathe at the pool.
She placed her stuff on one of the pool lounge chairs now, shedding herself of her wrap before returning to the edge of the pool now and lowering herself onto the edge, allowing her feet to dangle into the cool water. It already felt wonderful in this horrendous heat. Blue eyes looked to the older woman now and smiled, "I'm doing well! I know the orchards will be busy soon because of the picking season. Thankfully, my parents are still allowing me to take two classes at the University though. So I'll have quite the balancing act soon." Still, it was a challenge that she relished, "What about you?" The young woman had no doubt that Tenaya would just talk about work, that was the basis of every single conversation she seemed to have, but Roisin figured she'd ask politely before needling around.
