Goddammit why did his cousin have to have a birthday on Christmas? Lindsay couldn’t fault Aofie for when she was born, but it made gift-picking extremely difficult. She had a lot of books, and she had a lot of things that pertained to writing and stationery. He felt like a broken record at this point. Her dogs were easy. All Lindsay had to do was just get them toys and that was that.
Eyes looked over the map of some open studios for the weekend. He had a few weeks, sure – but it wasn’t like he had all the time in the world. Lindsay found one booth that intrigued him. Was it a bookstore? Yes. But the name of it looked familiar. Aofie did frequent a few stores and cafés and he had thought about a gift card, but was that personal enough?
He stopped in front of the storefront and saw a typewriter out in front. It looked like it had been tested which was nice, but did she have one already? Lindsay pursed his lips. “Hey,” he started, to the person next to him. “Do you have any writers or book lovers in your life? Struggling for a gift idea…” he finished, with a bit of defeat.
Jack had the vaguest of ideas for Aofie's birthday and he wanted it to be special. He really did. It mattered to him and as much as he had money to splash, it wasn't like she was interested in the material things like some women. It would've been easy if she had of been into jewelry - not that he hadn't gone that route anyway - but something all the more special. And she was a book lover! He didn't know anything about books. He was an art man!
“Hey,” he started, to the person next to him. “Do you have any writers or book lovers in your life? Struggling for a gift idea…” he finished, with a bit of defeat.
Jack turned his head and nodded, "Yeah, yeah... I do, trust me, I'm struggling over this too. I am not good with literature, I don't know her taste all that great and I have no idea what is in her collection... Maybe a customized journal? Get a nice journal and have it leather bound with their name on it?"
He sighed and shook his head, "Why have they got to be so hard to pick for?"
Lindsay smiled with a laugh. “Yeah? I’m shopping for my cousin. She’s a librarian and an author, so it’s hard to pinpoint her. She also doesn’t like to burden anyone, though she likes the spoil us when she can.” He mulled over the ideas that the other male gave him. Aofie liked to write and doodle so maybe a blank-page journal? His parents were better at this, that’s for sure.
He chuckled, finally making the move to poke at the typewriter. “And they say we’re complicated...do you mind if I ask who you’re shopping for? Sister? Girlfriend? Wife?” Okay, maybe wife was a bit of a stretch – but that still fit in the realm, maybe? But the way his tone was going, it sounded like someone he wanted to impress. Lindsay understood that. Knowing Aofie, she probably was making him a quilt of some sort. He knew what the wedding gift was to her brother and sister-in-law. Lindsay couldn’t beat that.
