"Kindness never killed a man, so I like to think," Eli blinked, thinking it was a lovely thing to say and he nodded, tucking the words away to remind himself another day. He sipped his tea and took another biscuit, dunking it straight into the liquid whilst it was still hot. There was something relaxing about tea and biscuits, it was very British but he had embraced it by moving from the brutal North of Scotland.
"No, nothing all that interesting, just the same as always," he smiled and nodded slightly. "Nothing wrong with routine, nobody really wants to deal with drama." it was stressful and unnecessary. Simple and straightforward was the way to go with life.
"You've raised a good son Eli, and so you should be proud of him making a hard go of work and aiming to make something of himself. It is very good to hear, so few good stories these days reach my ears." Eli blushed faintly, unable to help the flush pink that coloured his cheeks at the compliment and praise. "Thank you, you are too kind. He really is doing his best and I am so proud of him for the way he has made his life work even with his challenges." he could have shirked his responsibilities to his son, especially being so young. But even without Eli forcing him, he had always wanted to do what was right. Eli cleared his throat and took another sip of his tea, hesitating. He had come for advice really and he was unsure how to go about it. "Speaking of challenges, I have somewhat recently come to find one of my own ..."
"Think nothing of it, Life can get messy and in the way." Eli's smile was easier as Caleb responded, "You are too kind, Caleb," The man had more patience than a lot of people Eli knew, and though the older you got, the more you understood that people were not as available as when they were kids, some friends were much less understanding than others. Caleb was one that was always there, and never seemed to mind how long it had been since they'd last spoke - though Eli did try his best not to neglect his friendships.
His eyes watched the dog who watched him right back, taking a bite of his biscuit. "She's a little trouble maker some days," Eli grinned, dogs and kids were much for muchness really - just as much trouble as each other. "As for myself, I can't say much has changed. I still do all the same things, meet the same people each day for tea or coffee, lend my ear to their plights. And work has been a little slower, but it's to be expected - can't have me in a stable yard constantly, too expensive. So all in all, there is nothing to report as amiss." He nodded, finishing his treat and taking a sip of tea as he listened. "So nothing particularly exciting? I'm glad all is well though," He nodded, he always felt guilty if things had been going on with his friends that he had missed.
"And yourself? How are you? Your son is doing well I hope? I take it you've been keeping busy?" Another nod, and another sip of his tea before he rested the mug against his thigh. "Yes, he's keeping himself busy with work, and so I've have Cole quite a bit recently, but I'm glad for him working so hard, he's trying to make something of himself and I can't deny that." He would do anything for his son, but even more so when he was really putting in the effort - he wanted things to work out for him.
Eli followed Cal into his kitchen, slipping his shoes off on the way and tucking them aside to be polite - he didn't want to be rude and tread any dirt inside. "No, but thank you for the offer. Take a seat, get comfy - relax, and tell me what has been going on since we last spoke. It's been so long... I can't even remember where we left off." He nodded and headed into the lounge to get himself settled - he knew better than to ask if Caleb was sure he didn't want help. He if needed it, he would ask for it. "I know, I've been terrible." He admitted, not on purpose but he'd been doing a lot of child minding, and then he'd actually been socialising a bit - unusual for him of course.
He sat himself down on one of the sofas, peering around as he always did at the place. As his friend returned with a plate of biscuits as well as the tea, he grinned. "Help yourself Eli," He nodded, going to select one of them - he did like to dunk with his tea. "Thanks," He added. "And you madam, don't you try sneaking a biscuit again, you hear? I caught you stealing one when we were last out and about, I haven't forgotten." Eli chucked at that and watched the dog look innocent. "Oh dear, but look at that face... how could you resist?" He teased, taking hold of the tea and dunking the biscuit into his tea. "So, how have you been? We could do with some catching up."
Eli had a rare afternoon off from babysitting - either his own teenager or his grandchild - and he felt somewhat at a loss. He had asked Caleb if he was up for a coffee or something similar, needing to get out of the house for a little bit whilst he had the freedom. He had almost messaged Memphis to see if he was available, but it had been too long since he'd seen Caleb and he could do some words of wisdom considering recent events - both that had transpired and what had been going on in Eli's mind recently. He needed someone wise to talk to who might be able to help him figure shit out.
He was running to time, if anything a little early as his son had kicked him out and told him to go have fun - whatever that entailed for an old man. Little bugger. "Perfect timing Eli, come in, make yourself comfortable." Eli smiled easily and headed inside after him, shutting the door and immediately crouching down to give the dogs some love. "Hello you two," He laughed, trying to share the head scratches out evenly so neither felt left out. He straightened up after a moment and headed further inside to the kitchen as Caleb asked, "Tea? Coffee? Something else?" Perhaps he would need a Scotch or something for this kind of conversation but instead he said, "Tea would be great, thanks." Not in the mood for coffee right now. "Want a hand with anything?"
Had Eli known about it in advance, he might have volunteered to help for the day. Following his stint in the army and his life of fixing things, mechanics and handy man knowledge, he figured he could have quite easily picked up a tent with general fix it things or something similar. The grandson hanging excitedly off his arm would have enjoyed helping too, but unfortunately he had only found out about it the other day, and instead had promised his son he would take Cole out to see the sights instead. Joe was due to come and find them in around half an hour, having requested to finish shift early so he could spend time with his son and father. He'd been working hard this month, taking on extra work, and Eli was both proud and concerned - he didn't want him to burn out.
"Wants ice cream!" Cole's little finger pointed excitedly toward an ice cream van, churning them out as fast as he could whilst the queue just kept coming. Eli smiled slightly, having been eyeing up the burgers himself, but if his grandson was placated by a mess of sugar, it might mean he got to eat his own lunch without sharing too much. "Alright then," He agreed, gently leading him over by the hand to join the queue, Cole's smaller legs toddling alongside his. "With sprinkles?" He asked, smile widened as the kid started nodding so fast he looked like an impression of a bobble head. Eli laughed, "Okay you got it."
HEY THERE! my name is clips/admin lily and i'm twenty-three omg years old. i'm a wiminz and i've been roleplaying for many millions of years. i was referred here by myself... but enough about me, here's my character. =]
: elijah evan acres
nicknames: eli
age: thirty-seven, 9th july
religion: christian
sexuality: bi-curious
marital status: single pringle ready to mingle
occupation: ex-naval commander mechanic - aircraft and auto part time handyman of sorts (works in construction/plumping when jobs arise)
brief history: eli had a pretty simple, apple pie kind of childhood. his sister was already six years old by the time he came into the world, but unlike some kids when they realise they now have to share their parents affections, she was all for it. his father was a naval officer, and he was quick to notice that he only got to see him during leave, trying to make the most of his time with his father whilst he had his attention, and trying not to get upset when his father left again. he was taught from a young age that crying and whining was not accepted as a young man. as an officer of the navy, and a high ranking one at that, cameron instilled strict rules upon his kids, particularly his son, who he expected to grow up with impeccable manners and the correct attitude. his mother was softer, but likewise took no nonsense, and both the children learnt where the line lay and not to cross it almost as soon as they could walk and talk.
His grades were fairely average. he worked hard, studied and completed his homework on time - not one for tardiness - but he just didn't have the brains for anything great. eli didn't know what he wanted from life, and it remained that way until he met a young woman by the name of Alana. he was only fifteen at the time, and they had exams, but boy did he fall head over heels. he'd never really shown much interest in girls, or even guys for that matter, but suddenly his brain exited his head and all he could think about was alana. luckily for him, she returned his affections. they dated shortly but were official within a couple of weeks, went to prom together, said the whole 'i love you thing' and went off to college together. eli studied a range of subjects at college. he already knew he wouldn't be going to uni, so he went into mechanics, of both the automobile and aircraft sort, woodwork (carving and crafting and all manner of making things), among other things. he figured he'd get a job right off the bat after he was done at college, wanting to save money as quickly as possible so that him and alana could move in together. unfortunately, that didn't wholly go to plan. at the age of nineteen, he got alana pregnant. he'd finished college and was into his first year as an apprentice at a garage when she announced the news. needless to say neither of their parents were too thrilled. alana was studying to be a doctor, and only in her first year of uni, and eli wasn't exactly rolling in money with his life all planned out. disappointed in his son's lack of discipline and control, eli's father took him out of his job, despite the fact that eli was old enough to decide for himself, and shipped him off to join the navy.
at first, eli despised it. he'd been told what to do by his father all his life, and if he had a choice he would be back home bringing in as much money as he could for his girlfriend and unborn child. moping about things wouldn't change the situation - his mother refused to go against his fathers wishes, and his sister had no way of persuading either parent otherwise. it didn't take long for him to realise the only thing he could do was get his head down and pull his weight. any paycheck he received along the way, he sent home for alana, who grew bigger by the day. the first opportunity he got to return home for two weeks and see her, he scraped together what little he had left over and proposed to her, eager to make things right by marrying the girl he loved and raising his soon to be expected twins. things didn't go to plan. whilst away at the base, alana went into early labor. out of the two children that were expected, only one survived. the other unfortunately was born with downs syndrome and just didn't make the early birth. the news was not received well by eli, who was upset that he didn't just miss the birth of his son, but that he had lost a daughter and was unable to be there for alana.
the next few years were difficult, but alana and eli stuck through it as best they could. eli came home every chance he got, but he found that he was enjoying his work on the ship, and the money was good enough to support his fiancee and young boy back home. he hated having turned into his father in the respect that he missed out on certain aspects of his sons life, but the navy had become somewhere he belonged, and he wasn't ready to leave it behind. ten years passed since his son was born until anything changed. he was almost thirty years old when his world got turned upside down again. may 15th, at 8:05pm, a drunk driver drove through a red light and collided with the drivers side of a black audi, killing the driver, and severely injuring the young passenger. eli's wife and child. he immediately left the navy and returned home, unable to do so for almost a week after the incident; it was the worst week he had ever endured. alana's family held the funeral in order for him to be able to attend. he had no words, he could hardly believe it was real. alana had always been sweet and thoughtful, careful... she would never harm a soul, and yet someone else's stupidly and misjudgment had wiped out her life in a heartbeat. eli's son - joe - remained in hospital with several breaks and fractures, and a punctured lung, during which time eli moved his life back home, fully withdrawing from the navy he took up a job in construction close to home, resorted his life, and spent as much time as he could at his son's hospital bedside until he was well enough to return home. it was the only thing he thanked god for - that his son was saved.
it was hard going, naturally. eli had been reasonably absent from joe's life, and they had to work to learn how to live with each other, alongside the fact that both of them were grieving. eli frequently got it wrong, and cursed himself for it, but he kept at it, and over time things began to work. his job picked up, he got to know his son and things just...clicked. things changed a little again when eli moved himself and joe down south to hickstead, england, when his son was fifteen. eli's father had a heart attack one afternoon on his way home from the post office, and died on the way to the hospital. he's been having heart problems for a little while, but the shock of his death still rocked eli and his family to the core. when a job opportunity arose to work with aircraft machinery down south he took it. joe put up a bit of a fight, but accept that the fresh start would be nice - alana's spirit hung over them both, and it was hard seeing places they both used to go with her every day. and when his father was gone, the feeling of being haunted became worse. the move was pretty easy, and the job was good pay. things have mostly been settled aside from the little issue of joe falling into his father's footsteps. much to eli's dismay, his son fell in love with a young woman, much as eli had done, and within a year of moving to hickstead...he, likewise, had knocked her up. stern words with his son were given, but it wasn't going to change matters. the child was born - a little boy named cole - and despite the fact that, like joe's twin sister, he has downs syndrome, he's the happiest, most loved little boy in the damn country.
[/ul]
: - his two year old grandson, cole - his son, joe - hands on jobs - keeping busy - rising early - horror movies (finds them funny) - being active - black coffe (can't stand anything that has fancy stuff in it) - people who pull their weight - a beer after work - keeping to himself - cooking
dislikes: - sweets - slushy romance films (finds them awkward) - ignorance - laziness - not having the solution to a problem - indecisiveness - movies you have to read (i.e subtitled films) - being in the limelight - people who whine - bullies - indian food (can't handle the spice) - paper cuts (they hurt!)
strengths: - anything to do with machines (he's got a wealth of mechanical knowledge) - not squeamish - 20/20 vision - good at reading people - good sense of figuring out if people are lying to him/something is wrong/observant - physically powerful
weaknesses: - over protective - his grandson, he struggles to say no - pancakes (always softens him up a little) - not very academically intelligent (struggles especially with maths and english) - crying girls (tugs his damn heart strings) - can't switch off sometimes (ends up overdoing it)
secrets: - sometimes struggles to make sure it's only one beer after work and not more.. - feels like he's drowning sometimes/feeling his way through the dark when trying to look after his son. he's terrified he's doing a crap job without alana. - no longer has any real interest in women anymore, but doesn't want to be alone forever.
fears: - never finding someone he will feel comfortable with like he did with alana. - his son/grandson dying . - being unable to provide for his family.
habits: - rubs the back of his neck when he's feeling awkward/unsure - whistles when he's in a good mood - will throw himself into his work if upset over something
overall personality: eli is not a very complex man, but you would probably nudge him toward the strong and silent stereotype. he'll keep to himself out and about, he's not interested in being in anybody's limelight. he's happy to just keep going his own way, get his head down and work hard. he has a good work ethic, which has always been praised by his bosses, most of which comes from the discipline his father instilled in him. he's got good control over himself, which sometimes he feels in the only way he managed to avoid slipping off the edge when alana died. sometimes it's almost too much, he doesn't let himself really feel, apart from when he's with his son and grandson, thats probably the first time you'll get a proper smile. he's got a big softie side that you won't immediately see. he can be quite gentle and sweet, and damn it he'll take good care of anybody that he loves. he's loyal to the core, modest and humble, with an easy going kind of nature that makes him very easy to get on with. he doesn't hold grudges, and he doesn't pussyfoot around - he's not rude but he won't bother beating around the bush if something isn't working. he's basically a good guy, but he's just a little bit lost at times, unsure where he stands now that alana is long gone, and he's unable to feel settled with another woman. he can lay on the charm when he wants to, and if he compliments you then he means it, he's not one to lie in general let alone into someone's bed, but he's more of a commitment guy that a one-nighter. brief history: the acre's family has had money for generations. it's old money, passed from father to son to father to son along with the great company they'd owned throughout the decades. evan was born the second child to grayson and jessica, who had already taken time out of busy schedules in order to have first roman, then evan. growing up he never saw much of his parents, raised mostly by a string of nannies who barely stayed more than a year at best, and his hyper-active little shit of a brother, who was the reason they never stayed long enough for evan to remember them properly. roman was always going to be the black sheep of the family, with his short, black hair and blue eyes he was an angel in disguise, who went about causing trouble, evan always traipsing after him trying to persuade him not to. their parents tried to tell him off, but they had very little influence over their eldest son when they worked long hours and were often over-seas more than there were at home.
unlike his brother, evan grew up with a sensible head on his shoulders. with the constant flux of nannies he had to teach himself a few things rather than be babied and have them done for him. he had to learn to keep himself entertained, because whilst him and his brother got on well, there were always times roman stormed off and wanted to be left alone, and so evan had to learn to keep himself happy and drive away boredom. reading was one way, and he sank into his books. he was sent away to private school once he was of age, where he was surrounded by people who knew his family and wanted to be his friend. it was because of his money, and even the young evan was disgusted by this. instead, he picked out his own friend from the lot, a smaller boy who didn't have the money to be here, that was obvious from his scruffy second-hand look, however he had obviously earned his place there and he picked him. because he didn't care about money. he became evan's best friend.
he made only one other close friend, a few months later, a boy named declan who was loud, forward, over-confident, latched on and the three became good friends. they made it through the years together, declan needed pushing though, always one mark from being pushed out of school considering the private school pushed students to average B's or else, well...evan was always having to keep him going, and thus began his ability to lead the three. occasionally his elder brother, who had dropped out of school at sixteen and gone into mechanics and the occasional not-so-legal street fight, would hang out with them, but generally evan sailed through the years on a grade A average and passed his classes, choosing now to enter university alongside both best friends and the occasional visit from his brother who enjoys taking up his floor from time to time.

overall personality: mature for someone of eighteen you'd expect them to make a lot of smart-mouthed comments and go out drinking all the time, but evan's not really like that. he's incredibly mature and grown-up for his age, almost as though he's middle aged already. he's not stupid in the slightest and he'll think before he acts, taking things into consideration and not one to risk other peoples safety for one of his adventures. quick thinking he's got a way with words and he's very quick thinking, knowing the right thing to say at the right time, he can get people out of anything. it helps that he's a rich bastard but even so, there's more to it than that. sometimes he can offend people without meaning to, his words are weapons without an instruction manual and so whilst sometimes he can use them to his advantage, occasionally he says the wrong thing and offends people without meaning to do so. a leader it's clear that out of his friends he's the one in charge - not to the extent that he's arrogant or an asshole, but more that his friends would follow him anywhere, and it's always usually him that gathers them together and directs them places, as well as clearing up after them when things go wrong. he keeps them together. intelligent he's a very smart cookie, though his excitement lies in law, history and physics rather than maths and english. he has a way with words that can't be denied, and he could be writer but he's more interested in the mysteries of the past and uses his smarts to discover and solve them instead. an old soul he's a bit of an old soul, loving history and the mysteries presented, he's got something wise in him, something much older than his eighteen years. loyal he's a brilliant friend, and would do anything for his mates no matter the cost of it. his friends are everything to him and he sticks by them through everything. he picks friends because of who they are inside not because of their money or their parents, and he'll do anything for them. intuitive he's got a good eye for a liar, and he can often sense if someone is keeping something from him or up to no good. he dislikes being lied to and dishonesty, and finds it one of the worst traits somebody can have. he's an honest guy himself and so if you prove yourself a trustworthy person he'll often pick you as a friend over any other flaw you may have. parent-like he's often a little father-like to his friend, chastising them when they do something idiotic, or something wrong, encouraging them to do the right thing, to behave even at times and though he's a good mate to have he's often picking up their pieces and sorting out their messes. adventurer he's a stickler for mysteries and myths and legends. part of the reason he enjoys history so much is that he adores the things that were left undiscovered, the hidden treasures and the parts of history that were never discovered. he loves all that mystery stuff and delves often into things long forgotten.
