His shift was over for the day, having clocked off at little after one from the station once his replacement came on. With some soft civil banter exchanged, he decided that he would take Tobi and Cap out for a few hours. He'd had a feeling that he would go for a ride after work, so it was a good thing that he'd packed spare clothes for the barn in the trunk of his car.
It didn't take him long to get changed from his work uniform and get Captain saddled, it was like a well-oiled, well-timed machine. The bay gelding was a sweet heart as much as he was a stubborn bugger to deal with, but Shannon loved him all the same. Calling Tobi to follow, they started out for the trails, deciding that the flat meadows were what he wanted to traverse for the afternoon.
Whilst the other trails were fun, they weren't suitable for relaxing - in his mind. He had to be very aware of where they were stepping and what was before them. The meadows however were made for whatever you felt at the time, and for him, it was just a gentle mosey along the flat land so he could reconnect with his horse outside of active work.
Tobi for his part stayed at a respectful distance from the horse, yet was never out of Shannon's line of sight. He trusted his canine companion just as much as he trusted in Cap to keep his footing in a chaotic place like the city. It was even more trust than he'd ever had in his old Quarter Horse back home - how River had loved to chuck a fit when he didn't feel like working. But somehow that sour palomino gelding had mellowed out with a young lady who was interested in him for western pleasure classes. But to each their own.
He let Cap have his head, the reins loose against his neck as he cropped grasses in passing, being a lazy plodder for the time being. Shannon almost wanted to see the gelding open up, see how fast he could cover the ground, but there was a risk he'd hurt himself long before Shannon could prevent it, so he skipped over it. Maybe another day.

the history
father • Henry Callum Reese, 47, Military Officer [Active Duty] mother • Liliane Iris Reese (Kens) , 46, University Teacher siblings • Chandler - 28 [Twin Brother], Jennifer - 26 [Younger Sister] important people • Matthew & David Kens 50 [Uncles] hometown • Austin Texas, USA overall history • Shannon and Chandler were born in their Austin home three weeks early to first time mother Liliane who had mistaken key signs as passing pains. Although early, both boys were perfectly healthy if slightly small. Liliane was slightly overwhelmed having been expecting a single child only to be blessed with twin boys. After Henry arrived to the hospital to meet his son, he too was given the shock of twins and said they were blessed.
They were allowed to leave after a few days to which there was much celebration between both sides of the family. The home was filled with love and care for the young children, even as Henry began his training for the military which caused some stress on Liliane who begged for him not to go. But they made it work.
As the boys grew, they grew up with a loving pair of parents, even if they didn't see their father all that often. Both sides of the family were active in their lives, and somewhere in between they were graced with a baby sister whom the twins were immediately protective over. However things began to sour within the family for unknown reasons which made the house tense. At times they were sent to spend weekends with their uncles. Matthew and his husband David were always a highlight for the kids, they were fun and honest and open, taking them to the part, playing games and let them pick movies on their movie nights. It was these nights that the three kids loved the most.
School was normal enough, all of them having fairly decent grades for the most part. Shannon was more of an active, sports driven kid where his siblings were more book smart, but his parents were fine with it. They were not crazy strict, as long as they were trying their hardest. His home life became more of a rodeo when his other uncle - Benjamin - came to the house. Shannon never understood the shouting that went on in the kitchen, he simply would usher his siblings upstairs, put on some music and play games with them until they went to bed. Often times after the fighting, Shannon would go down and find his mother crying and he would attempt to cheer his mother up as best he could, but it never really worked. With his father away, Shannon had to grow up fast and start taking charge of his siblings and running the house in between his sports.
Fourteen and helping his mother out by going to the shops for her or paying the bills for her as she was rushing out the door to lectures. He watched his mother develop into a workaholic, rarely home for more than a few hours at a time. His uncle would turn up at random times and Shannon would have to stop him from just barging into the house, even having to call the cops a handful of times before his uncle simply stopped coming. He went to school, made sure his siblings were good, and rode bulls and broncs on weekends for his entertainment. The harsh sport saw him often hurt - mostly bruised and jarred, but he broke a few bones when the bulls were particularly unforgiving, but he always went back for the thrill of the ride.
At eighteen, he was so used to not seeing either of his parents in the house that the divorce caught him off guard. He tried to reason with them both, but after a heated argument with his father that highlighted his mother's affair which had given them Jennifer, Shannon's world was rattled. The fact that his mother had had an affair with his father's older brother maade so much sense as to why Benjamin had been coming to the house so often in a rage. The new split the household up despite Shannon's best efforts to try keep things together. Chandler moved out immediately, furious that Shannon would even try to defend their mother, and Jennifer went to live with her biological father. Henry went back to the military and left himself and his mother without a home as he took the house out from under the them.
They both stayed with Matthew and David for a time so that they could get back on their feet before they decided to make the move to England. It pained Shannon to let go of his rodeo career as he'd been so close to going up the ranks to professional riding, but for the sake of his mother he went with her. So by twenty they'd gone from Texas to England, leaving behind all of his family and his siblings. Finally settling into Hickstead. The second they were in town, Shannon wasted no time in finding himself a job. He signed up to the British army, knowing the chances of passing his father were near zero, to become a reservist which upset his mother greatly. He also signed up the police academy, finding that it was probably the best thing he could do. Keeping busy and using both outlets for structure, Shannon excelled. He even joined side courses so he could work with the K9 Unit as well as those of the Mounted Unit. He graduated from the police academy at 26 years old and has been assigned to different surrounding towns which led to him moving out of home with his mother.
And now at the age of 28, he's settled back into a small city apartment and lives there with his dog, Tobi, a black German Shepherd who stays with him always. He also keeps a part-time job as a stable groom for Blue Acres where he boards his Thoroughbred mix gelding - Cap.
