brief history: Colby and Emma Rocha had enough money to be happy, but they couldn't be classed as being "rich". They had been married for three years before Emma fell pregnant. While the pregnancy went smoothly enough, the birth wasn't as easy; after being in labour for three days, she gave birth to a girl and the doctors struggled to stop the bleeding. All ended well though as both mother and baby survived - it was just one of those freak things that happen sometimes with childbirth.
To add salt to the wound, the Rocha family spent the first three years of their daughter's life in and out of hospital as the baby always seemed to be sick with one thing or another, though as soon as she turned three everything seemed to turn a corner and Lani's health picked up. However, they still had to keep an eye on her when she was sick as she suffered from febrile convulsions if her temperature went up too much.
The start of school went smoothly, though up until that point she'd always been with her mother, not attending preschool or anything like that, but she took on school with the same confidence she took on everything else.
It was when she hit ten that her reckless streak really began to come out. This is when she started to work outside the box that she felt the teachers were trying to fit them into, she started pressing against boundaries, pushing the rules, anything she could find that would add a little spice to the lives of those around her. There were times that her reckless impulsiveness tended to put her in deep water though - climbing out the bedroom window of their two-story house and scaling down the side of the house to meet friends, climbing water towers. There were a couple of times that she could have possibly put herself at risk, but nothing that broke the law.
Christmas of 2009, they were heading home from her grandparents in the mountains and, while Colby was a careful driver, they hit a patch of black ice as they rounded a shady corner and lost control of the car. The car finally came to a stop against a tree, writing it off, but parents and child survived the crash; Lani broke her collarbone and split her forehead open, Colby broke ribs from hitting the steering wheel and his wrists when the airbag released, Emma suffered whiplash. All were treated, kept overnight for observations and released from hospital the next day.
While Lani kept good grades, she seemed to be on the bad-side of every teacher, and no matter how often they threw her out of their classes, nothing changed the fact that she wanted to do things his own way.
After their third meeting with the principal, Colby spoke to the owner of a harness racing barn not too far away, hoping keep his daughter's impulsive spirit in order, and Lani found herself skipping out stalls, grooming and caring for horses, introducing Lani to her love of horses. The family had a couple of riding horses so every once and awhile, Lani would be "paid" by being able to ride - though she never had any lessons.
It was when she graduated junior high that Colby threatened to send the girl to military school to "straighten her out", as the high school had already expressed that they weren't looking forward to the arrival. After a rather eventful year at highschool, Colby and Emma were at a loss of what to do, and decided that a new start for Lani would be the best decision and after a discussion with Emma’s parents, who lived in London, it was decided that the girl would spend her last two years of high school in London.
However, Lani had other ideas, and as soon as she was through customs at Heathrow, she blended in with another family who were leaving. After a quick cab ride, she was at the bus station. Being new to the area, and with nothing more than the two bags she had for carry-on, one held her laptop and the money she had saved over the last couple of years, she boarded a bus to Hickstead, the place sounded cool enough, and she was ready for a new start. She looked out the bus window, knowing that this could probably be marked down as her most reckless venture yet.

People who take drugs to get high (it’s just so easy to get that feeling without damaging your insides)
People dismissing her as weak because she’s a girl
strengths: Thinking outside the box
Hard worker, will keep at something until the job is done
Being able to capture the perfect photo without really trying
weaknesses: Weak immune system (not that she’d tell anyone)
Doesn’t quite know the meaning of the word boundaries
Takes risks she probably shouldn’t (some would say has no moral compass)
Doesn’t often take time to think before she speaks
secrets: She’s a runaway
Her age
fears: Closed spaces
Being trapped under water
habits: Taps her fingers when she has to remain still for too long
Sings random songs when working, even if the radio is playing something else
overall personality: Lani comes off as your typical girl-next-door; she's friendly and very much an extrovert, being able to fit into all cliques and not seem out of place in any of them.
Though, when you get past the first impression, she's impatient, judgmental, recklessly impulsive, and not one for following rules (she likes making her own). She won't intentionally break rules, but she will push them to almost breaking point, and then she'll keep pushing until she knows exactly what she can get away with.
While she holds this bad-girl persona (for those who know her), she has above average grades, though if she finds an easier way of doing something in class, she will do it her own way - which has led to her being at loggerheads with teachers - though her answers will always be the correct ones, so she can't work out what the problem is.
Her biggest problem is that she's a bit of an adrenalin junkie, and is always on the lookout for some new to do to get her blood pumping (and we're not talking drugs here), so she'll be the one climbing that tree everyone says is impossible to climb, scaling down a slope to get to the river. Now, how old do you have to be to base jump..? [/ul][/font]
