Janie was lingering in the front yard of the Macintosh abode. Well, not lingering per se. But standing there awkwardly was the real image, mainly because it felt like forever. She didn’t know why she was nervous, as she and Molly had hung out plenty of times together. They had their late nights and all that. No sleepovers though. But still plenty of one-on-one times. Maybe it was the intimacy of baking? It was Molly’s thing but Janie was determined to learn something today.
As instructed, Janie had bought all the ingredients for Monster cookies. And the first Star Wars movies. Even though Molly never seemed to pay attention to it, Janie figured she was allowing the Sci-Fi to enter her home due to it being Janie’s birthday.
Janie was tempted to ring the doorbell again, but Mrs. Macintosh thankfully spared her that moment. “Sorry for the wait Janie. Please, come on in.”
“It’s all good, Mama M. Thanks for allowing me over!” Molly’s parents were used to Janie and Oliver being over, running amuck. But it was never without permission. They would often phone over to make sure it was okay. Once they were inside the home, the fridge and snack cabinet were fair game.
Janie stepped into the foyer and slipped off her shoes, before slipping into her designated pair of house slippers. Fluffy monstrosities that were Chewbacca-themed. “Molly should be down any minute, feel free to roam. Oh, and Happy Birthday!”
“Thanks, Mama M!” Janie walked to the kitchen and placed the bagged items on the counter. She took a seat on the island and began unpacking – waiting for Molly to make her grand appearance.
Clothes were strum everywhere - the bed, the floor, draped over chairs and a desk, as Molly Mac'Intosh finally stepped into an outfit that she felt was appropriate for baking this afternoon with her best friend, Janie O'Hara. She looked cute, sporty even with her shorts, silk bomber jacket, and t-shirt, and it was an outfit that she didn't care about getting dirty. Yet, Molly felt certain that there was something missing. After a moment, her hands reached for the shirt and bunched it up, tying it in a knot to expose her mid drift. Dark brown eyes looked herself over in the mirror, posing and twisting, "Perfect."
And not a moment's too soon, for she heard her mother yelling up at her in that dangerous Scottish brogue that her friend was here and she better not keep her waiting. Molly was undecided about her hair, but given she really had to head downstairs now, she opted for leaving it down and grabbing a silk scrunchie from her desk on her way out. The teenager pounded down stairs now, skipping the last three in dramatic fashion as she landed on the ground. Goodness, how Molly had forgotten how much fun it had been to live at home compared to living at Willow Brooke during the school year.
Given Janie was not in the hallway, she figured that meant that she was already in the kitchen. Molly headed to her now, her socks barely masking her footsteps as she slid in, arms striking a pose, "Why hello there, Birthday Girl!" Well, apparently she had missed the star wars memo, but in her defense, she was more of a trekkie. With that, she walked right up to Janie and threw her arms around her, pulling her into a hug.
