Piper was so, so excited! Even though she knew what kind of possible scares were coming up, as she helped with the costumes and makeup – she didn’t know when it would happen though. She stepped onto the trailer after everyone else in her group got on.
It took a minute for her to adjust the skirt of her dress so it wouldn’t get too in the way. When everyone was sitting, the driver of the tractor turned around. He was dressed in a haunted scarecrow costume, hay sticking out everywhere, and patchwork makeup.
“Good evening goblins and ghouls! Are you ready for some scares?” he boomed. And after giving them some time to react, he began his spiel. “A few rules for this spooky ride! Please no touching of the acts, and they are not allowed to touch you either. If there’s an emergency – please ring the bell hard. Do not jump off the trailer! Are there any questions before we start?”
Fifteen year old Brooklyn Hazelton could not believe her ill luck in this hayride drawing. Not only did she not get to sit with Ronan Slade, who would be two hayrides behind her, she was also sharing the same air as one Piper Ledor-Kita. If circumstances were different, say like the older girl was not the object of affection of Brooklyn's crush, she might have felt differently about Piper, but alas, that was not the case. It was silly, the fifteen year old even know how silly it was, and yet, her feelings could not be helped.
Part of this was probably also compounded by the fact that she was with a bunch of strangers on this hayride, her friends - Emma Young and Boyd Reid - were on different hayrides. She had officially been split up, and as noted in every Scooby Doo episode, that was never a good sign. But wallowing had never been Brooklyn's strong suit, and she was always up for a challenge. So when the tractor driver was booming all of the rules and asking the four teenagers if they were ready to go, she only had one response, "Aye aye, Captain!" Brooklyn called out, fist pumping the air, "This Haunted Hay Ride is ready to go!" Plus, the sooner it was done, the faster she could get back to her friends and shenanigan's.
Landon finished chatting with the others, getting the signal that they were to split up for their haunted hayrides. It was slightly sad that the didn't get the same carriage as Jaana but he would see her again after. As they were separated into their groups, he recognized Brooklyn from the barn. She was someone who spent more time there than he did - but he was trying to make an effort to ride Mary more often.
"Can you explain to us how this is going to work exactly? When you mention emergencies it makes me just slightly worried." He assumed that it had to do with being scared by staff members - but he was someone who wanted to be prepared with the scares. Some people enjoyed jump scaring people and he wasn't the biggest fan of it. He shuffled over to Brooklyn, wondering who else would be joining them on their hay ride. "Hi Brooklyn, long time no see. How have you been?" He gave her a smile and fixed his long sleeve white t-shirt, making sure that his costume was looking okay before he sat down on the bench.
Piper couldn’t help but hold a small snort in when Landon had to get all antsy. “He means if one of us falls off, or if someone has a panic attack.” She hoped it didn’t come off as sarcastic, as she was aware she could become that way around Halloween. “We drive around and have things scare us!” Piper wasn’t exactly the best person to explain it. But Landon seemed to be okay enough to scooch his but onto the hay bale. He wasn’t about to jump off or anything.
Thankfully, the driver announced that anyone who didn’t want to take the ride could get off. There would be no judgment since everyone wanted to have a safe and fun time.
It was kinda funny to hear Landon Collins pipe up upon needing further explanation to exactly what 'emergencies' meant and how the hayrides worked. Brooklyn supposed that she shouldn't be surprised, given that it didn't that England specialized in such Halloween activities. But everyone had to get their feet wet somehow when it came to the spirit of Halloween, and clearly, the Ledor-Kita Bash was the way to do it. Brown eyes watched as Piper mulled over how to explain what she meant before settling on a rather matter-o-fact answer before her explanation on the point of it all, "Why am I not remotely surprised that you appear excited to be scared, Piper?" Granted, Brooklyn was looking forward to this too, but she wanted to poke the older girl.
Besides her though, Landon piped up now in a friendly manner, one that the fifteen year old could not ignore, "Hey, Landon! I'm doing well enough, adjusting to secondary school year as been...interesting." Like, even just calling it secondary school. But she wouldn't get into the nitty, gritty details. Truth be told, the only sort of student activities that Brooklyn excelled in was at the barn, an actual school, well, lets just say the fifteen year old wasn't a star pupil, "I take it you've been busy with school? I feel like I see Mikayla riding Mary more often as of lately." She felt the lurch of they tractor, and the trailer beneath her. Looks like there might not be much time soon for small talk as Brooklyn already felt herself bracing for the scares of the evening with no crushes to cling onto.
Being scared wasn't something he was used to dealing with. He was happy enough dressing up, but his family wasn't huge into the holiday. Clearly, the Ledor-Kita family was. "Just making sure we don't get a lawsuit." He joked, shrugging it off with a laugh. "I'll be fine, there can't be any ax murderers running around, right?" Helping Hooves tended to draw a variety of people - including families with young children.
He nodded at the explanation, always being one to make sure he understood what was going on before it happened. "Alright, let's get started." His mind began to wander off - wondering how Jaana was going to do on her hay ride. It was something new for the both of them. "I knew you and your sister enjoyed Halloween but not this much!" As soon as he had arrived, he wondered how much work was put into making the party happen. It was more extreme than any one he had attended - even back home in Chicago.
Landon turned to face Brooklyn as the younger teen began to talk. "Interesting? I hope it's just the regular school drama and nothing too intense." Even in University there was always something going on. He himself happily avoided it - especially Shiloh and her gang of goonies. He nodded at her comment - school was starting to take up his life again. "Yes, unfortunately. The new semester started a few weeks ago now. It why you've seen her around the barn more. My family is pretty good at looking after Mary if I'm too busy. I did get to ride her basically all summer though." It was the whole point of buying the mare in the first place - she was calm and well minded enough for the four Drew family members to share. "How's your horse doing?" As soon as he finished talking, he felt the tractor lurch forward towards the unknown frights ahead.
Piper rolled her eyes when Landon got all technical. She didn’t blame him, but she found law stuff boring. There was a need, of course -but it was Halloween! The reality was already scary enough.
Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the trailer to start its bell and lurch forward. There was a hint of gas in the air as more screams were heard. Excellent. Horses whinnied in the backdrop, the glow-in-the-dark skeletal paint gracing the darkness.
The eerie silence was broken by the sound of maniacal laughter. A pair of similar-height people dressed in symmetrical clown uniforms came lurching over a wooden fence, their features highlighted by the dim light of the tractor lights. Even though Piper knew who the people were, she still jumped from the jump scare.
