She found solace in the clouds and being outside. The rain lulled her asleep, and thunderstorms hid the shouts of her father. She didn’t know what caused the switch, but Elaene never dared ask. As the children grew, things changed. Her brothers became more warped in their views, and Elaene became more distant. Religion was becoming more important, almost forced. If she wasn’t ready for church in time, punishment was given. Elaene learned to lie and remember verses for her safety. When she was fifteen, Elaene met a boy from church – another teen who liked to party hard due to the control his parents had over him. A few bad decisions later, Elaene fell pregnant. Something she only knew when she became best friends with the bathroom. She had aimed to keep the pregnancy a secret, but Rhyne had found the test in the trash. If World War three was a thing, it’s what the household became. Forget eggshells, it was like stepping on glass. Elaene didn’t have a plan, but all she knew was she needed to be out. Like Shaun, Elaene left as quickly as she could. She found shelter with a friend from school, the family helping her through her pregnancy and birth. She was forced to grow up but found a great enough support system to help raise Fionn and continue schooling. An attempted relationship was tried until Elaene started her second year of university. In 2016, the two officially married - after six years of being together and blending their families. Patricia and Elaene remained in Youghal, giving Elaene the stability she needed. She had a medical scare when she was 40, getting a staph infection after falling walking along the shoreline. At first, it appeared manageable - but the infection unfortunately spread and damaged a valve. It quickly prompted an emergency open heart surgery to fix the damage. It was a wake-up call to the Murphy family, prompting Patricia to leave the news station to help Elaene through her recovery.
