Ama was nervous, but also happy. Danny was coming home. She had known her cousin had been gone for a while now, and she was a bit intrigued when he reached out to her to plan a surprise for Molly. Ama didn’t know how to feel, being the first one to know he was coming back. But there was something about surprising someone, in a good way, of course. She would obviously take this request seriously.
She sat in her home office, knowing full well that everyone else would be out. Also knowing, Molly hadn’t been to her home in ages – and was also busy with whatever she was doing nowadays. Boys? Work? Hopefully, not trusting too much. Ama had a feeling that would get the young woman in trouble in one way or another.
Ama had instructed Danny to come through the back from the back entrance of the garden, mainly because her office faced that way. So when she saw him approaching – she ran, but gracefully, down the hall a bit to let him through the kitchen. When he was in, she smiled. “Welcome home, Danny,” Ama greeted. “Are you okay with hugs?”
He'd finally bitten the bullet, so to say, reaching out to Ama for her help. It had taken him far too long to try and reach out, and now that he had, there was no turning back. Getting to Ama's was a short trial - he had to really concentrate on finding the right house and the right back gate that was not under threat of a guard-dog, but he found it and let himself in, walking up the path to the back door.
He looked up as the door opened and Ama stood there.
“Welcome home, Danny,” Ama greeted. “Are you okay with hugs?”
For a moment Danny wasn't sure if his brain was keeping up with him, if it was still stuck loading the fact he was back home and talking to his cousin. Then everything caught up.
"Thank you Ama," he said gently, offering a small smile, "Yeah. Yeah, I think I am ok with hugs."
He didn't even realize he was moving forward when he found himself sweeping her up into a giant hug. Mentally he kicked himself and loosened the hug, making sure he wasn't crushing her too much.
Ama was about to give the initiative, but Danny beat her. It took her by surprise, but it was evident that he was looking forward to hugging someone again. She didn’t blame him. It was a hard thing to deal with, being away. Ama heard of the small things that Christian missed, especially being around his family. There were times that the triplets reminded him of what he had lost, but they were also a reminder of growth and healing.
“It’s so good to see you too! Are you hungry or anything?” she asked, beckoning him into the kitchen. She was a bit famished herself, and it was nearing lunch now. There were leftovers that she would happily allow Danny to get dibs on. While she had the means and the wealth, it didn’t stop her from enjoying a fried bologna sandwich on two slices of white bread with a thing of fake cheese.
There was some part of him that never wanted to break the hug - how long had he been away from family, from that familiar warmth? He missed his family greatly, and there was something unreal about the fact that he was able to reach out and hold them again. He hadn't thought he would get the chance to again. But even so, he released Ama.
“It’s so good to see you too! Are you hungry or anything?”
At that, he gently shook his hand, "It's been a while. But no thank you, I'm still readjusting to normal food and eating habit. Besides, I think it rude to eat in another person's home."
It was a weird tick he had, but he tended to refuse eating in anyone else's home and he didn't know where it stemmed from or why, it just happened to be a thing he did. It annoyed his parents something fierce, but he couldn't break the strange habit.
“Of course, no problem,” she smiled. “If you need any water or anything, you can find it. Tap’s fine here.” This didn’t prevent Ama from filling up a glass of ice and pouring some cold brew into the glass. The sound of cracking ice was always welcomed.
“So, what made you want to surprise, Molly?” Ama asked, taking a sip of her cod brew, finally admitting it needed some creamer. It was the bottom of the barrel – so the strength was heavier than freshly poured. “What did you come up with so far?”
