Hudson was a whirlwind at work. With Spring around the corner, people were inquiring about selling their homes. There were also people asking about properties for sale, even some wanting to move to town.
He finally had a chance to sit down, making himself a cup of coffee. His mind was racing, thinking about how to get his clients the properties they want. After a quick check of his watch, he had about an hour left before he had a showing with a client. They were interested in moving into Oldaker Avenue, one of the most prestigious areas in town. Which is why on this particular day, he was wearing his best suit.
The dark haired man sat in his office chair, leaning back as he sipped his coffee. He couldn't sit still though, deciding to get up after only a few minutes - pouring the rest of his coffee into a to-go cup. Hudson placed a lid on it before throwing his wool coat over his shoulders. With a few quick steps down the stairs, he was back outside on the sidewalk. The ping of his cellphone distracted him - pulling it out of his jacket pocket. As he read the text message and walked towards where his car was parked, he ran into someone causing his coffee to fall to the concrete.
"Hey, watch where you are going." He did some maneuvering with his hands to make sure his phone didn't also crash to the ground.
Penny didn’t have any major excuse as to why she was out and about today. Maybe it was to avoid crinkle face sister or something. She had caught wind of her sister’s arrival and had managed to stow away in her section of the mansion. Perks of being there first, she claimed some of the best rooms. But her body was saying more outside time, and so it was. Despite keeping her pale nature, Penny did like a solid walk and bike ride. It was still a bit icy out for a bike, so walking it was.
Her heart took her back to High Street, maybe to spend money on more lovely art. The room where her father had all those ugly portraits, had been redone in an emerald green and gold leaf wallpaper. Something that Penny loved doing. And it had now become her personal collection of artworks she had done and had purchased.
She had stopped in front of a store to window shop but saw they were closed until the evening. Bummed, Penny turned to walk down the street, only to be met with a fleshy collision. Penny heard the sound of a coffee cup hitting the ground, but thankfully nothing wet on her.
The person who bumped into her had an annoyed tone. She rolled her eyes. “Uh, I was just fucking standing here. I don’t know, maybe not look at your phone all the time? Jesus, dude…” Penny replied, in an equally annoyed tone.
With the cellphone securely in his hands, he didn't have enough time to pick up his coffee cup. It fell to the ground, the hot liquid tipping towards him and spilling all over his dress shoes.
He looked up to see who he ran into. Hudson didn't recognize the woman, even though he had lived in Hickstead since he was born. "Wow, I thought people in this town were nice and friendly." He wanted to roll his eyes, though his father would have scolded him for it if he found out. After shoving his phone in the pocket of his suit jacket, he shook his head.
"I do apologize for my attitude. Did any of the coffee spill on you?" Hudson quickly glanced at the woman's shoes, seeing that they were still the same sparkling white color. "Can I get you a coffee or something as an apology? This isn't the first time it's happened." It was the least he could do after literally running into the stranger. Hudson checked his watch, realizing he had more time than he thought before he went to the showing. He took a step back from the coffee puddle, carefully bending down to pick up the Styrofoam cup off of the ground, throwing it into a nearby can. The dark haired relator shuddered, hating germs but quickly pulling out his hand sanitizer and putting some in his palm.
Penny looked at him, wanting to send daggers through this guy. At least he was smart enough to offer to get her a new coffee. Thought, when he had mentioned that this wasn’t the first, she wanted to smack him across the face. Maybe it was because he was lacking so much special awareness.
“Yes, a coffee would be perfect,” Penny responded. She felt a bit evil, contemplating if she should change her order to something extremely expensive. But he at least apologized, so she couldn’t be too mad, right? “So you’ve spilled a stranger’s coffee more than once? You have a record or something?” she asked., adjusting her scarf and purse. He had brought it up, which meant Penny could tease him about it. Well, that felt like an equal trade to her.
Hudson could feel the glare, clearly he had picked the wrong day to cause an accident with the strange woman. He understood her anger, though there had to be a bit of empathy. "Starbucks or Parker's? Who has better coffee anyway?" He had to find a way to lighten the situation, maybe even make the woman laugh and forget the coffee incident. Hudson flashed her a smile as he picked up the fallen coffee cup and lid from the ground.
"No actually, you'd be the first one. I usually pay attention while I'm walking, but a client was asking me a question about a property." He learned quickly that if someone was interested in a property to jump on his phone and answer their questions. After throwing the garbage in a nearby garbage can, he turned and headed towards the coffee shops. "This your first time getting bumped into with hot coffee?" He took a quick glance at the woman to make sure her clothes weren't ruined or that she didn't get hot coffee on her skin.
"I'm Hudson. Were you heading anywhere specific this morning?" He continued walking, making sure the woman was walking beside him. The question was maybe a bit personal, but the conversation had to start somewhere.
"The more expensive option," she smirked. "And really? I see. I imagine your life would be over if your phone ever broke. And nope. You're the first." Penny would've added another sassy comment to it but decided to hold her tongue as she walked next to him. Guiding him to Parkers. While not necessarily more expensive, she decided his money would go towards the small business. Because fuck major Corp capitalism, right?
"Cool, nice to meet you, Hudson. I'm Penny. I was just keeping myself busy. You?" From her first impression, it was evident he was working But also, she had no idea. There were people who were complete workaholics after all. Or just needing to know everything at every second.
Hudson caught the smirk and raised his eyebrow. "Is this because I'm paying or because you have expensive taste?" He hadn't expected that comment coming from a complete stranger. If the woman was attempting to flirt with him, he had no idea. His parents often joked he was married to his work. "It would be actually. All my work gets done on there." There were sometimes he wished he could bubble wrap his phone. Thankfully, he tended to not be accident prone. "Is your phone okay?" He couldn't be the only one attached to his phone.
It took him a few moments to realize that they were heading to Parkers. "I thought we'd be going to Starbucks, but I do enjoy Parker's every once and awhile." The smaller, local bake shop was where he stayed if he needed somewhere quiet to work. "Nice to meet you too. I was just closing a deal. A client bought a house so I sent the sellers the deal." Hudson turned the corner and opened the door to Parker's, letting Penelope enter before him.
"Is this somewhere you've been before?" He didn't know how new to the city she was. Hickstead was home for him and had been since he was born.
