Okay, so it had taken a little bit longer than a month for her to convince Ms. Naomi Clarke on the idea for her to have a hayloft sleepover than she had thought. After her first rejection, the teenager had to go about it like a business proposal and class presentation in order to get her way. Perhaps it helped that technically the person on this sleepover was Maeve O'Doyle, a college aged girl that the Blue Arces Owner actually trusted more than a sixteen year old girl. Thankfully, it seemed to do the trick since Naomi finally relented, that and maybe she got tired of seeing Molly every time she walked into her office. The second she got the yes, she had gleefully texted Maeve the details and to get prepared for a night of fun.
The days leading up to that Saturday night seemed to drag on forever, but it was finally upon them. Molly had done her research on Ghost Horse and other haunted tales of the United Kingdom for the evening. She rearranged the small kitchenette area in order to melt marshmallows and chocolate to make smores. Yes, she went all out for this evening of giggles and ghost stories. She had even convince one of the stable hands to help her with rearranging the hayloft in order to fit two air mattresses up there with all the blankets and sleeping bags that one could physically need on a chilly night - along with a heavy duty flash light and a battery powered lantern.
Molly stood triumphantly over her makeover of the hayloft - if it hadn't been for the obvious walls of the barn and stacks of hay, one might have thought they were out in the woods or something without any fire hazards. She checked her phone - Maeve would soon get here and their festivities would kick off. The horses were all snuggly away in the stalls below them. The teenager couldn't help but to peer over and steal a glance at them dozing off from above before returning to the nest of blankets. A slight laugh escaped her as she let herself flop into them with a soft thud, a grin sitting on her lips. Absolutely nothing was going to ruin this night.

If she was going to be truly honest with herself, Maeve didn't think Naomi would actually give them the go-ahead to have a sleepover. Before the fire, the woman would have been easy to talk into some teenaged fun. Now though? This place was protected like Fort Knox, and Naomi's sense of humour had been locked up with it - not that she would ever blame the woman for it, she almost lost everything when the barn had gone up in flames. However, with two persistent teenagers asking her the same thing, and having Cara offer to check in on them while she was working the horses, the owner had finally consented, though Maeve had a notebook full of rules that they had to abide by, the top of the list no matches, which was totally understandable!
Standing in her dorm, Maeve checked her bag for what felt like the millionth time (I've told you a million times, do not exaggerate!). She had a change of clothes for the morning, a t-shirt and yoga pants to sleep in, her creative writing folder and text book, so she could finish her homework, as well as a handful of books she'd found in the library. Zipping up the bag, she lifted it over her shoulder, reminded the RA that she was going out for the night, headed out to her blue breeze Kia Picanto and drove toward Blue Acres, stopping off in town on the way to grab some snacky things.
Arriving at the barn, she headed inside, said hello to Inka as she made her way to the tack room. Cara had left her a message, saying that she had left a box of things that they might find useful in there. Looking into the box, she grinned when she saw half a dozen LED hurricane lanterns in a variety of colours, as well as a container of S'more Brownies. She laughed as she picked the box up and headed up the stairs to the hayloft, a place that had been a second home to her when she had first started riding here. "Wow!" She gasped with a laugh. "Looks like someone's been busy up here. Um... Cara left us some... things."
Molly had been so impressed with her work, and possibly admiring it a little too much, that she hadn't even heard the arrival of her company until Maeve piped up behind her, "Wow!" The teenager turned to look and see her friend there now, a grin popping up on her face, "Looks like someone's been busy up here. Um... Cara left us some... things." Laughter bubbled from Molly as her dark eyes took another sweep of the hayloft, "Do you think it's too much?" Maybe it was, but she could not help but to think her set up was perfectly instagram worthy with a dash of magical. Also, maybe she should help Maeve out with her stuff rather then just stand there like a preening peacock over a room.
"Here," she said now, moving to her friend now, "Let me help you with that box. That was super nice of Cara to lend us these! In my opinion, one can never have enough lanterns and smores for Ghost Tales." And with that, she let loose her best witchy and manically laughter that she could without disturbing the horses below. Getting the box into a nice place, she quickly took out the contents now to add to their surroundings, "I still can't get over how we managed to convince Naomi to let us have this sleepover." Which naturally meant that nothing could go wrong. That statement sort of hung in the air as Molly thought it over for a second because nothing would go wrong. Both she and Maeve were highly mature young girls. They could be trusted. That was what they sold Naomi on, wasn't it?
Dark brown eyes looked back to Maeve now, figuring there was no way she could have just packed that lightly with just her clothes on, "Do you need me to help you grab stuff from your car?" She asked now, eagerly willing to help, "I figure once we get ourselves settled in, we can mircowave us some smores and then get to some story telling. I've certainly been researching."

"Do you think it's too much?" Maeve grinned as she looked around and shook her head quicky. "No way!" She declared. "I've never done the whole camping thing before, so this is going to be awesome!"
She laughed and shook her head at Molly's enthusiasm, though it was beginning to rub off on her. "I still can't get over how we managed to convince Naomi to let us have this sleepover." She laughed again. "Because we're going to have babysitters all night?" She offered with a shrug. Naomi had never said as much, but Maeve had been at BA for long enough to know how things worked here, and she knew that the place always had people in it, especially since the fire.
"Do you need me to help you grab stuff from your car?" She shook her head. "I left my bags in the tack room, so I could have both hands to bring the box up." She was worried that she had under-packed now, wondering if she should have just brought everything she had decided not to bring. "Oh! I've been doing some research, and found quite a few goodies. Nothing really, local, but still creepy." She wiggled her eyebrows. "I'll be right back!" With a grin, she headed back down the stairs to grab the bags she'd dumped when she found the box.
Molly couldn't help but to let loose a sigh of release when Maeve commented that everything look great. Maybe she had cared more about pulling off this 'camping' sleep over than she thought with the college girl. After all, the teenager had been talking a big game for quite a while. At least, imagery wise, she had delivered. Now just another twelve hours to go, "Truth be told, I haven't camped either," Molly said with a bashful grin, "I was just copying off everything I've seen on my teen soap operas with a little help from Pintrest. But thank you!"
She nearly made a face at the idea of them needing babysitters during this sleepover. They were practically adults! But given the trying times that Blue Arces had in the past, that barn fire still fresh in everyone's minds, Molly supposed she couldn't blame Naomi for being cautious even if they weren't wielding any flames. You could be prepared for everything and still somehow miss something. Stuff happens, after all, "Let me guess. Mik, Nat, and Shecanna might be making surprise cameos all night?" And naturally, Molly thought all three of them were beyond serious. Maybe her second mission of the night would be to try and get one of them to laugh for fun.
The teenager wasn't surprised that Maeve insisted on grabbing her bags herself without any help, but before she left, she did offer one tease to Molly, "Oh! I've been doing some research, and found quite a few goodies. Nothing really, local, but still creepy." Now that was exciting, and she could not help but to squeal, "Girl, don't leave me hanging!" But it was too late, Maeve had disappeared beneath the hayloft now, leaving Molly to only guess what was in store for them when it came down to the ghost stories. At least both of them had issues finding stuff locally, maybe they'd try and make up their own legend from that.
Quickly, she finished setting up the remaining of the new supplies that older girl had brought with her. Aligning all the lamps in a circle to mimic a circle and testing the fairylights one more time to make sure they would not fail her once the overhead lights turned off, Molly then began setting up the SMORES BAR and just in time too, since Maeve reappeared. Molly dramatically pointed out the bar now, presenting it to Maeve now like she had just won the biggest grand prize in the world, "I hope you brought yourself the biggest sweet tooth in the world - because I, Molly Mac'Intosh, declare that this barn sleepover has officially started."

Maeve grinned as she looked around. "Well, it looks like like the pictures I've seen online and in movies, so you've done really well." It made her feel better, and less like she'd missed out, when the other girl had admitted to not having been camping either. Though she guessed camping-out was probably more of an American coming of age thing.
"Let me guess. Mik, Nat, and Shecanna might be making surprise cameos all night?" She laughed and shrugged. "Well, I know the gate gets locked at night, and not too many people have keys to get in, so we'll probably have Mik watching us till he clocks out for the night and then Cara." She knew that the latter didn't sleep, and she knew that if she'd been through half of what the older woman had been through, she would be the same. There were some nights that her memories were enough to wake her from nightmares. "Mik eats like a horse though, so we'd better hide the sweet stuff from him."
She set her things to the side of the loft, keeping them out of the way until they were needed. "I hope you brought yourself the biggest sweet tooth in the world - because I, Molly Mac'Intosh, declare that this barn sleepover has officially started." She ducked her head a little, her cheeks heating up. "Truth be told, I don't have much of a sweet tooth." She confessed with a shrug. "I grew up being told to watch what I eat, and kind of always have." She rolled her eyes at herself as she crossed her ankles and sat down on the floor. "Okay, my... well, research, led me to looking at ley lines. While there aren't any that are anywhere near us. In fact Sussex is a tad on the boring side when it comes to things like stone circles or other ancient sites, though there are a number of haunted places. Sorry, I digress, back to ley lines. British Latitudinal Ley Line is the closest one to us, and is the longest line that ends in the middle of the Isle of May. While running through the ancient sites that a ley line has to run through to be called a ley line, it also runs through a number of buildings that people claim to be haunted. Are they haunted, or is it just the energy of the lines? Our next closest line St Micheal's is really cool too! It goes from Ireland to Israel, and along it are seven places with the name Micheal in them."
Molly could not help but to beam and clap her hands together, "Excellent." Now that everything was set though, she was happy to get everything started, "Then my work here is done." Maybe it would blow Cara, Mik, and Shecanna's minds too if they were to make surprise appearances. Her less than enthusiastic response to the probability of them showing up clearly amused Maeve, who could not hide her giggles. The teenager supposed she couldn't blame her friend. It was the sort of antics that may lead to eventual trouble because she thought herself too much of an adult to need any sort of babysitting, "Well, I know the gate gets locked at night, and not too many people have keys to get in, so we'll probably have Mik watching us till he clocks out for the night and then Cara," Maeve commented, before adding on, "Mik eats like a horse though, so we'd better hide the sweet stuff from him."
Dark brown eyes looked towards her array of smores ingredients now, "You don't say," she mused out loud, an almost devilish thought entering her brain, "I mean...if he says we're barn sleep over saints, I don't see the harm in letting him have some." This might have been the first time in Molly's life where she thought that bribery may be the key answer to something, "Wait, I don't know what I am saying. Since we're pulling off the perfect barn sleep over, we don't need any help. Or sharing!" Well, maybe if Cara wanted something, that was different, but the teenager considered the young woman a friend, unlike Mik and Shecanna who were supervising adults and potential fun killers.
She was a little surprised to hear that her friend didn't have much of a sweet tooth. Probably something she should have asked ahead of time, "Oh! No worries, just means more for me," Molly replied with a grin, "No pressure. Feel free to eat as much or as little as you want for smores. Admittingly, perhaps I went a little overboard." Especially for two people. It dawned on her now that she got a little carried away with the whole thing, but there was no harm in that. Plus, Molly knew she could share with the rest of the morning staff and riders tomorrow what she didn't finish off today.
Flopping onto the blankets now, she was quick to join Maeve on the floor as the older teenager set her stuff up, readying for her tales. It occurred to Molly, now that she was sitting on the ground, that perhaps she should have figured out how to dim the lights to get a more campfire atmosphere, but then shrugged it off. That would be a request to Mik or Cara whenever they decided to arrive. Her attention turned to Maeve now and her ley lines, something that Molly had heard of before thanks to a few choice books that involved faeries and ghosts. And not only that, she certainly recognized the Isle of May, "What?! We should check that out. Too bad we can't take the horses there. But I know they do boat trips to the island during certain months. Take the train to Scotland." With what money, Molly didn't know, but that was a later problem given that she was allowed to dream.
Molly also had her own leads, "So I overheard at Willow Brook that, per one of the girls at Seven Oaks, said there's been some strange funny going on's over at the trails, and," she thumped her hands against the blanket for dramatic flare, "Get this, supposedly a mysterious horse. What if it's Ghost Horse."

"You don't say, I mean...if he says we're barn sleep over saints, I don't see the harm in letting him have some." Maeve couldn't help the giggle that escaped and clapped a hand over her mouth to stop it from getting worse. "Wait, I don't know what I am saying. Since we're pulling off the perfect barn sleep over, we don't need any help. Or sharing!" She laughed again. "I'm guessing you've never tried to say no to Mik before." She tsked and shook her head sympathetically. "He has the most tear-jerking Puss in Boots look ever!" There had been one chocolate muffin left, and she had reached for as Mik had arrived in the loft, the look of defeat on his face and made her offer the muffin to him, and the smile she had received, which was enough to power the entire barn, had made it worth it. She smiled at the memory, she wasn't even sure if the man knew he was even doing it when he pulled those faces.
She flopped onto her back, looking up at the beams above them, liking the way that they criss-crossed their way along the underside of the roof, helping support it. She blew out a breath as she thought of checking out the place along the ley-lines. "I don't think I'd be able to get that kind of time off." She said with a shrug. "When summer hits, I'll be on the show circuit for Naomi."
She turned to Molly, listening as her friend shared her own information, her brows rising. "Get this, supposedly a mysterious horse. What if it's Ghost Horse." She sat up again and grinned. "I wouldn't be able to take Inca, but I'm sure I could borrow a lesson horse that I can take on the trails, or ask one of the boarders if I can borrow one of theirs!" One eyebrow lifted. "How does one go about catching a Ghost Horse?"
Mik placed a hand against his ribs, trying not to breath so deeply, as everything hurt, but that was situation normal for the end of a good work day now. Closing his eyes for a moment, he was able to regain his centre and took the wheelbarrow out to the muck heap before he hosed it out and then left it upside-down to drain while he finished the last of the clean up before he did his final checks and could head home.
He whistled while he swept the aisle, enjoying this time of the day, the place was empty of people, other than the two young woman in the loft, and it was just him and the equids. "Yeah, you're so hard done by." He said to Glory, as the gelding thumped his jolly ball on the outside of his door, before swinging it across the aisle. "Watch it, bud! That almost hit me!" He retrieved the ball, and then threw it over the door before going back to his sweeping.
Once everything was tidied up, and he made sure that Naomi's office was locked, he went back to collect the wheelbarrow and took it to where the others were lined up. Lifting the barrow into place, the handle slipped from his hands and hit the one in front, staring off a domino effect and the sound of falling barrows was very loud in the almost silent barn, Mik cringed as each one hit the ground.
Maeve laughing at her was unexpected, given that Molly felt rather serious about them pulling off the greatest barn sleepover that has ever been witnessed by Blue Arces. But then, the other teenager's follow up statement soon made it clear over what she was laughing about: saying no to Mik. A snort escaped Molly now, she dramatically stuck up her nose and waved her hand off like she was hot stuff, "Please. It takes more than good looks and puppy dog eyes to sway me when it comes to baked goods and sweets." Actually, that was a fucking lie. Mik was cute and she would be absolutely willing to give him however many smores he'd ask of her, but Molly wasn't going to admit that to her older and cooler friend.
The teenager watched as the blonde flopped over now, her blue green gaze staring tentatively up at the ceiling and the beams that made it. Molly eyed her and then craned her neck upward to see if she could see what was so interesting about it. But there was nothing there besides beams and fairy lights, which would suggest that something serious was about to come out of Maeve's mouth, or at the very least, a very polite rejection. And sure enough, that was the case. The reality that going off of on an adventure, even in summer time, was not entirely possible when you were eighteen years old and adulting. Molly flopped over now, "It's okay. It was worth a shot. I'm sure being on the show circuit with Naomi will be fun and exciting! Get a case of the professional equestrian life."
That wasn't the only exciting thing going down though, as dark brown eyes watched Maeve sit back up, "I wouldn't be able to take Inca, but I'm sure I could borrow a lesson horse that I can take on the trails, or ask one of the boarders if I can borrow one of theirs!" One eyebrow lifted. "How does one go about catching a Ghost Horse?" Molly sat up, she was certainly prepared for both of these, "One, I bet I could pull of reserving both Major and Luna for our adventure. And then two, we ride to where it was last spotted, leave carrots or something, and then do a stake out. And when it appears, we trap it in a circle of salt!" And as if on que, there was a loud bang, "Oh man...Ghost Horse might be onto us." And before Maeve could even contridict her, there was another loud sound, followed by more, like a dominio affect. Dark brown eyes at her friend now, "Maeve. He's here! Ghost Horse is here. Come on! We should investigate!" And with that, she was up and trying to chuck her slippers for her paddock boots.

Maeve grinned and shook her head, getting a feeling that her friend had never been between Mik and baked goods before. Tonight was going to be fun, if he came up here before he left.
She sat up as the thought of competing all summer began to close on her with the chilled fingers of fear. "It's terrifying." She said quietly, thinking of the few shows she had done with the mare when she campaigned her the previous summer. "What if I do something wrong? What if I make a mistake and hurt her horse?" Naomi wanted Inca to make a name for herself, so that any foals the young mare had would sell well and go on to being champions themselves, and that created a heavy weight to sit on the young equestrian's shoulders, even if she wouldn't admit these worries to Naomi. She shook the dark thoughts away and grinned. "Ignore me! Tonight is about having the best sleepover ever!" Admittedly, her first sleepover ever, but she wasn't going to bring that up.
She pulled a face at the horses mentioned. "As much as I like riding Major, Venus is my girl when it come to the school horses." She said with a shrug. The sudden noise caused her to leap into the air, and she looked around with wide eyes. "Oh man...Ghost Horse might be onto us." Her brows flew up as she looked at Molly. "Maeve. He's here! Ghost Horse is here. Come on! We should investigate!" Her mouth dropped open as she tried to find words, a small laugh escaping her as she watched the younger girl looking for her boots. It was one thing to be talking about Ghost Horse, but to go and see if he was actually downstairs? She quickly jumped to her feet, pushing her feet into her own boots. "Did you bring a bag of salt?" She was only half joking, as she picked up a flashlight to defend herself with, should she need it.
Molly watched as her friend seemed to slowly go to a terrible place in her mind and soon confirmed that was exactly what was happening: "It's terrifying. What if I do something wrong? What if I make a mistake and hurt her horse?" She gave Maeve her best sympathetic look - while Molly herself always thought showing was fun, she was only in it for herself and proving to herself that she had what it takes. It was a much different weight compared to what Maeve must be feeling with showing someone else's prized horse, and knowing Naomi Clarke, the woman probably had big business plans for Inca should she go on to do great things. Before she could say anything though, Maeve seemed to snap out of it, saying to ignore everything. However, Molly didn't think this should be ignored, the other teenager was her friend after all, "Well, while we are here to have the best sleep over ever, I don't think your feelings should be ignored. They are valid, however, if Naomi didn't trust you, she wouldn't have you riding her horse. And you and Inca are going to kick ass, just you wait."
Hopefully that would help Maeve out some. The teenager didn't linger too long on the subject, simply because she knew the other girl wanted to move on from it, and that was fine. She just wanted to make sure that everything just simply wasn't brushed under the rug, since that never did anyone any good. She grinned when Maeve commented that Venus was ultimately her favorite school horse, "Say no more. I'll reserve her and make this adventure hack happen when you're free." Although at this rate, maybe they wouldn't have to go for an adventure hack if Ghost Horse really was here. The comotion had jolted the teenager into action, finally wrestling her paddock boots on and running towards the ladder down to the barn when Maeve brought something important up: Did she back salt? That stopped Molly dead in her tracks, "Shit." It was serious too, since Molly Mac'Intosh almost never swore, "I did not."
Then, an idea snapped to her brain, just as the other teenager grabbed a flash light, "But I bet the tackroom and supplies closet has some epsom salt we can use! I'll just...buy more to replace it." That should take care of it, "Come on Maeve! Adventure awaits us." And with that, Molly was scrambling down the ladder as fast as she could and hitting the floor with a thud. It felt a little eerie now being in the barn with just Maeve and the lighting. Molly was running on pure adrenaline now, and this was without the help of a sugar high. Her brown eyes narrowed as she hushed whispered to Maeve, "So far, so good. We have to make our way to the tackroom before Ghost Horse can intercept us. Where do you think that sound came from?" After all, avoiding a ghost spirit had to require some tactical planning.

Maeve pressed her lips together and nodded. She had arrived in Hickstead as a timid fourteen year old who thought she was nothing, that she only rode horses because her social worker had talked Naomi into talking her useless-self on. It was only recently that she had actually believed she was actually as good as everyone was saying she was, and that had been because one of her idols had approached her at a show to commend her riding, that she began to believe. "Thanks." Hurting Inca was at the top of the list of things that freaked her out the most with the job she had been given, and as strong as her bond with the mare was, she knew that things could go wrong at the drop of a hat.
She grinned and clapped her hands, a gentle hack on Venus sounded like a wonderful time. "Yay!" You could learn so much about a person and what they were like with horses when you were outside the arena. Some people were great, while others fell apart without the constant correction from an instructor, and Maeve felt that they were the kind of people who played at being a rider, but would never be a true equestrian.
Maeve looked over at the kitchenette. "There's probably some salt in the cupboards over there?" She suggested. "However, we may not need it." She followed Molly to the exit, not wanting to bring in the logic that there might actually be people still working downstairs, as she followed the other girl down ground floor. "Possibly down where the stallions are, so the tackroom will be between us and them... him... it?" She shrugged, as the place was eerily quiet now and she looked around.
Molly stopped dead in her tracks, her hand flying up to loudly smack herself in the face in an epic face palm that even Captain Picard would have been jealous of, "The kitchenette! How could I forget that? You're genius, Maeve." And it was probably much better than epsom salt. Although it was too late now given she was on the ground. Normally the teenager was a very logical person, she rivaled Oliver in being logical out of the three musketeers, but there was no denying the fact hat once she got passionate about something and all riled up, that logic went out the door most of the time.
When Maeve cautioned that they may not need it, Molly simply waved her off, "Nonsense! It's best to be prepared, especially when we don't know what's out there."She called up, looking towards the other teenager before returning her attention to the barn. Chocolate brown eyes took in their surroundings, and it suddenly occurred to her with the dim lighting and lack of people with the shuffling sounds of the horses just oddly eerie it was. She had been so wrapped up in it that Maeve dropping down besides her and then speaking nearly caused her to jump out of her skin.
"The stallions! Maybe Ghost Horse was a stallion himself..." although, if that were the case, maybe it would much rather hang out with the mares. Or, where the feed room was, given that there was feed and treats. Either way, it was time to make their way, "Alright, lets go. We should be stealthy. Who knows what could be out there lying in wait for us." And as if on que, one of the horses let out a rather loud sneeze, which did in fact, cause Molly to jump and nearly spring into action, not to mention, scooby doo it into Maeve's arms. Thankfully, the teenager managed to avoid that, but then looked to her friend and said with a deadly serious tone, "You did not just witness that." And with that, she made her way down the hall now, beckoning Maeve to follow her.

Maeve grinned and bowed at being called a genius. "I do my best to please." She offered. "Even if I do mention it later than I probably should have." She shrugged as she clipped the flashlight to the belt loop on her pants.
She guessed there was logic in being prepared, even if Maeve thought that this was nothing more than a wild goose chase - not that she'd ever say that to Molly - and when she was on the ground level her eyes surveyed the barn aisle, making sure that all the stall doors were closed. She flinched when the horse sneezed, though her brows shot up in amusement at her friend's reaction and she mimed zipping her lips. "What happens in the barn, stays in the barn?" She asked with a giggle, clamping her hand over her mouth to stifle the noise, as she fell into step behind her friend, heading down the barn, being watched by each horse or pony as they crept past. "Did you ever think of putting together a ghost hunting kit?" She asked quietly. "You could have all kinds of handy things in it, salt bombs, holy water, a crucifix or two." Okay, she was not talking rubbish, but being in the empty barn was slightly creeping her out.
