Mina was just having one of those days, her thoughts were all jumbled since a very interesting night with Ivan - the first since he was back in town and honestly, the young woman felt fairly confident that it wouldn't be the last. But it left her at some sort of weird cross roads that she didn't exactly know on what to do with, and she didn't know who to talk to about it either. Gideon heard it all from her, and Casper, and Faerie, yet nobody gave her proper answers. It just felt like more questions to her than answers. Or maybe it was because they knew best that Mina Cohen just had to talk herself half to death before the lighting struck her little brain and the answer came to her on its own accord.
But that hadn't happened yet, and it was utterly frustrating. She blamed the fucking universe. She had it all until a week ago and it dropped an atomic bomb in her life. Mina had her potential boyfriend, Danny. She had the steady job. She had the big, fluffy, lovable cat and several friends. It was all there - like a happy Bob Ross picture, complete with happy little trees. And then it wasn't. The picture was damaged by a cascading wave, no, monsoon, yes, a monsoon of emotions. A huffy sigh escaped Mina, she couldn't bring this negative energy home with her and it occurred to her that her candle stock was running painfully low. Which settled her lunch break for her - Gideon could man without her help.
As soon as the clock struck noon, Mina darted for the door as best as she could without decking it on the floor and headed off. The young woman knew where she was going: Black Thorn. Home of the best candles, incents, and soaps that a girl could ask for. They even had a crystal shop. People in Hickstead were always a little weird about Black Thorn, something about them being 'witches', which Mina thought was stupid since this wasn't the 1800's. They could worship magic if they wanted to - if that was their thing, she wouldn't judge. If being 'a witch of the wilds' could have been a possible job in her life, Mina would have taken it in a heartbeat. But alas, that had not been in the cards.
Mina marched right on in there with a mission, an desperate flurry of a girl as she headed to her favorite part of the store: candles. But as dark amber eyes stared at the assortment, she suddenly felt a loss. Picking up a pink candle in her hand and then a white one, she stared at them, "Do I need pink for romance?" she mused out loud, even though she had two potential men in her life, "Or do I need white for clarity?" Fuck. She didn't know. Mina knew right then and there if there a way to sum up her feelings right now, there's just be '' sitting over her head. A loud sigh escaped her, as her arms went slack to her sides, still holding the candles as she threw her head up to stare at the ceiling, "Why are you causing me this allergic reaction, universe?"
Yeah, yeah. I'm Fine. I'm just having an allergic reaction to the universe

Serenity had the day off work... well, she was on call, but she didn't have to be in the office, and she was going to take full advantage of that. She'd already been to the stable and played with her ponies, then she headed home to put all of her energy on her Craft, something that she had been neglecting lately, and she felt guilty for it. She'd also use this time to go through her inventory.
I need of some stock, Serenity found herself on the way to Blackthorne. She'd only been there once before, but even then she knew it wouldn't be the last time. Pulling her hair back into a high ponytail, she walked into the store and began to look around, keeping an eye on the list of candle colours she needed, though picking up a couple of soaps that caught her eye and she liked the scent of. "Do I need pink for romance? Or do I need white for clarity?" She smiled to herself as she approached the candles. "Why are you causing me this allergic reaction, universe?" Her brows rose at the conflicting emotions she could see as she studied the younger woman who was pondering over the candles. "One would think that you might want blue for calm, honesty and guidance, and purple for knowledge, wisdom and intuition." She offered. "White would work for anything, as it can be used in the absence of other colored candles as white colors contain the energy of the colors that originate from them. She selected the candle colours that she needed, as well as some pure beeswax candles.
Mina had been so wrapped up in her thoughts and anxieties with the universe that she hardly paid attention to the fact that she had an audience member. Granted, the young woman had never been the best at hiding her emotions, so perhaps this shouldn't be surprising. The voice, soft and gentle, caught her off guard though and it caused her to snap her head back fast and turn so quickly that she nearly knocked herself off balance. Thankfully, Mina managed to skitter her feet and ground herself once more to the floor. Chocolate brown eyes fell on the woman now as she continued to speak, "White would work for anything, as it can be used in the absence of other colored candles as white colors contain the energy of the colors that originate from them."
She stared at her curiously before a slight laugh escaped her, a combination of nerves and embarrassment wafting over her now, "I haven't even thought of blue or purple." But damn, maybe she really did need some blue candles given that they were being suggested. That must be some nervous energy that she was wafting off of herself right now. 'Let's not kid ourselves here Mina,' she thought to herself now, 'You are a bundle of nervous energy.' Quickly, she put the candles back now as fast as possible, doing her best to not knock into the stand and have another avocado display incident on her hand. There were so many shades of blue right now, she suddenly felt overwhelmed.
Rather than have another stupid panic attack over some candles though, Mina looked back to the woman now and offered her best attempt at a non awkward smile, "Sorry, I'm not usually like this," liar, liar pants on fire, "Er, I'm Mina. I have to say, you're quite knowledgeable and I don't think I've seen you around Blackthorne before." She cocked her head now, "Do you....do you work here?" Truthfully, there was something awfully familiar about her, but the young woman couldn't place it. Maybe she had seen her walk past the window display at Alcott's before while Mina had been day dreaming. After all, Hickstead is a rather small town.

Serenity cringed inwardly as she managed to startle the woman. "I haven't even thought of blue or purple." She nodded, information on candle magic love spells generally went straight to the point; pink and red candles, forgetting about the fact that the person might need to look inward before they thought about unleashing a wish into the universe.
"Sorry, I'm not usually like this," She gave a soft smile, brows arched. "Er, I'm Mina. I have to say, you're quite knowledgeable and I don't think I've seen you around Blackthorne before. Do you....do you work here?" Her smile softened. "I'm Serenity." She said. "No, I don't work here." In fact, she hadn't even stepped into the store until shortly before Yule, because she had run out of an ingredient and had a feeling that this place would have what she needed, and, in more than one way, it indeed had. She grew all her own herbs, so had that side of things sorted, but until the end of the previous year she had sourced her candles online. However, she was a firm believer in supporting locally, so she came here for when she needed new candles now. "If I didn't have a job elsewhere, I'd love to be able to work in a place like this! She'd never actually thought about getting a job that had anything to do with who she was, but she could see the appeal. It would be nice to not have to hide who she was as much as she did with the police.
She studied Mina for a moment. "I like using candles to send out intentions, too." She offered.
Despite the initial awkwardness of it all, or at least, despite all the awkwardness on Mina's part, it would appear that the woman before her would not go running for the hills. Instead, she gave her a soft smile which seemed encouraging, "I'm Serenity," the woman introduced herself before adding on, "No, I don't work here." Dang, then why did she look so familiar to her then? Knowing her luck, it would hit Mina at 1 am in the morning and she won't be able to sleep after the realization. She must have been lost in her thoughts far too long since Serenity then added, "If I didn't have a job elsewhere, I'd love to be able to work in a place like this!"
Right, she should probably say something. Mina beamed now, "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you Serenity! I'll be honest, you certainly had me fooled on not working here with your thoughts." They were even more on point than Mina's when it came to candles, "I have to say, you do look familiar to me though. I sit over at Alcott's Jewelry and Design...admittingly I do a lot of window watching, so I guess that must be it." Wow, could she sound any more odd and weird to this nice lady? For a moment, it looked like Serenity was studying her and she had wondered if she crossed a line before the older woman offered, "I like using candles to send out intentions, too."
Mina laughed, "Glad it's not just me, although I have to say, you seem much more knowledgeable than myself." She commented now, figuring she better own up, "To be honest...I uh...kinda just pull candle knowledge from the internet and possibly a young adult series I've read. I know the author did some serious research on it." Wow, she kinda felt like a childish dork now, and yet, Mina could not seem to find the ability to shut the heck up, "And I feel like I need it. My brain is like all over the place because of someone and it's got me rattled. So I was hoping the candles can help. I mean....I think my sibling called me obsessive like it was a bad thing." And then, she laughed again, nervous laughter now as she looked away. Man, why couldn't she be normal adult when frazzled?

"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you Serenity! I'll be honest, you certainly had me fooled on not working here with your thoughts. I have to say, you do look familiar to me though. I sit over at Alcott's Jewelry and Design...admittingly I do a lot of window watching, so I guess that must be it." Reni smiled and shrugged. "You've probably seen me around before. I'm a police officer." She conceded, as she was quite a common face around town, as she tried to be as friendly as possible when she was on patrol; chatting to as many people as she could about every-day topics, and helping people carry things when need be.
"You could say it's a family thing." She said mysteriously. She ran her hand above the candles. "While finding the meanings of the candle colours are good, a lot of the times, the candles will tell you which one you should use." She paused a moment as she thought. "You're a jeweller, you said? Do you pick the stones or metals you are going to use, or does it seem more like they are calling to you? That's the universe speaking to you." She smiled as she nodded toward the candles. "Humour me on this one. Pick up the candles in the colours you were originally thinking about getting, one in each hand, and tell me how they feel in your hands. Are they warm, or cold?" A little witchcraft never harmed anyone, and this was something even muggles could do. "And just because I'm a bit of a bookworm, what was the series you were reading?" She did love a well-written witch series.
When Serenity informed her that she was a police officer, the connection was made and it was like a volcano erupted in her mind. Mina's eyes lit up, "Ah! That's it," said now, her fingers snapping, "I've seen you around High and King Streets." And of course, in uniform, "I have to say, the civilian clothes really disguise you to a degree." Maybe disguise wasn't the right word, but it was hard to deny that clothes had the same affect as one Clark Kent wearing glasses. They really could change people, "Not that I am saying you look terrible in civilian clothes, you look awesome. I just do a lot of people watching..." well, that sounded terrible Mina, "Er...I do it when I get side tracked at work." Actually, that didn't really sound any better.
The young woman probably would have loudly face palmed herself, if it not been for Serenity's saving grace to move the conversation forward about the candles. The older woman certainly had a mysterious air about her, and Mina certainly wanted to give her props for pulling it off. She certainly would fit in will at Black Thorne should she ever not want to continue her police work, "The candles speak to you?" Mina asked now. Yup. Serenity was certainly a mysterious person indeed. But as she carried on, her words made a lot of sense, "I think you do have a point...I like to think that the metals and jewels speak to me. But I always thought that was because I liked wild and loud pieces." Who knows though, maybe they were secretly talking to her. Mina read enough fantasy novels to not put anything past the possibility of magic.
"Humour me on this one. Pick up the candles in the colours you were originally thinking about getting, one in each hand, and tell me how they feel in your hands. Are they warm, or cold?" Chocolate brown eyes blinked, staring at her for a moment, before easily giving in. Truthfully, Mina almost felt a little giddy from whatever exercise this was leading too, "Okay!" And just like that, she quickly reached back for the pink and white candles. Both felt heavy in her hands as she picked them up, trying to feel them out, "I think...they're warm," Mina mused now, cocking her head thinking before jokingly adding on, "And possibly heavy with burden." As for the books, the young woman almost felt a little sheepish now given the target demographic for her books, but she supposed that didn't matter, "I'm not sure if there's a real name for the series, but the first book is literally called Blue is for Nightmares. Its like...a mystery novel with witchcraft."

Reni grinned, as her civvy clothes were the polar opposite of her uniform. In her time, she like wearing flowing skirts and peasant tops, nothing too constricting and the fabrics as natural as possible. "Er...I do it when I get side tracked at work." She smiled and nodded. "I too like to people watch." She offered with a shrug.
"The candles speak to you?" She knew that to another person her words sounded kooky, if not a little stupid at best, though she waited while Mina thought over what she had said and nodded. "You have probably worked with the stones and metals for long enough that everything you do is so natural that you don't even notice how you perfectly pair things together." There was a little witch in everyone.
She watched as the other woman selected the two candles and weighed them in her hands. "And possibly heavy with burden." She smiled and shrugged. "Removing the human emotions from it, you're on the right path." Everything had an energy, and the trick in life was learning to read the different vibrations that this energy released. "It's called The Blue is for Nightmares Collection." She offered, as it was a series she had thoroughly enjoyed reading. "Though the "witchcraft" finger quotes and all "in it is more Melissa Joan Hart, Sabrina than Charmed. Did you buy it as a solo book, or as the boxed collection that comes with a spellbook? Another good series is White Haven Witches." Sure, she lived witchcraft, but it was fun to read about it too.
It felt a little weird admitting to a police officer that she liked to people watch, since Mina supposed technically that might as well be their job. But the young woman did it because her mind wandered and her imagination got the best of her, not for anything else. It was also hard to concentrate on a rather plain, boring piece of jewelry - line a single princess cut diamond slapped on a plain platinum band, when there was much more interesting things going on outside of the shop window. Serenity's smile calmed her though, there was no judgement to be found in her eyes when she admitted that she too liked to do it, "And if anybody says they don't, they're clearly lying." Now, that was just a plain ole fact.
If the older woman had been annoyed with Mina's questioning words over speaking candles, she certainly did not show it. Serenity merely smiled at her, the warmth behind it seeming almost 'all knowing' to a degree as Mina herself worked through the mystery behind them. It would seem as she had caught onto something though as the other woman pointed out to her that Mina worked with metal and stones almost on a daily basis, and likely no longer needed any direction when she worked. The young woman's jaw dropped, gawking almost, "Holy cow, I didn't even think about that," and yet it made perfect sense, "You are right. So candles are to you as designing jewelry is to me." Completely legit as far as she was concerned.
As far as the candles went though, Mina wasn't sure on how to really remove human emotion entirely from them, but maybe that was just because she generally tended to be overstuffed in the emotion department, "Right," she said, closing her eyes hard again and grasped again for the candles in her brain. Right or left? Where was the draw? Now the young woman wasn't too concerned, but mainly because the conversation was pulling towards another topic she loved. Books. Brown eyes opened again, Serenity's words clicking in her brain, "Ah yes! That was it. And I can neither confirm nor deny that I got the box set specifically for the spells." Otherwise, meaning yes. She cocked her head, "I haven't heard of that series. I'll have to check out...so, rounding back. Are you saying that you're a Sabrina Spellman then? We should see if our cats get along."

Okay, in hindsight, she probably shouldn't have disclosed that she liked people watching, especially when she was off-duty, but people watching was so much easier than people interacting.
She laughed gently at the question and pulled a face. "I don't know if I have that kind of relationship with candles, I've just been working with them for a while." To a point that she could reach into her basket of candles and pull out the colour she needed without having to look at the candles. "Crystals tend to sing to me though." She added with a mysterious smile.
She was silent as she watched Mina's eyes close as she reached out toward the candles again, and she gave the younger woman a small magical push to help her find the candle she needed. She grinned as the conversation turned to books, as it was easy to talk about fictional witches, and spell books, that was all make-believe. "Hey, it's a good book of spells." She said with a cheeky grin. She released an undignified snort at the Sabrina question, as that was a little too close to the truth for her liking. "Sadly, I work too much that I decided it wouldn't be fair on a pet. I would love to have a talking cat though!" As a child she would imagine that their cat could talk, after all the creature had appeared out of the forest behind their house, so she was sure that the cat was a magical creature, given to her family for protection... Well, if the Academy hadn't worked out, she could have become a children's author.
Leave it to Mina to point something out that might have been awkward. But there wasn't much time to dwell on the topic, given the important discussions of candles and how they work magically. She and Serenity finally seemed to be on the same wavelength, and just that alone made the young woman feel a little more confident and a little less awkward, "Ah, well I hope to be as confident as you then one day with the candles. I feel like it would make my life much easier." Not that Mina was a witch or a wiccan, far from it, but it was still fun to believe in the magic that a candle could give her clarity to all the ups and downs of life. She glanced at Serenity curiously, "Crystals, huh? I've always been interested, but then I just get distracted by what they can be made into," the young woman said bashfully, "How do they help you?"
And once again, she was so easily distracted by books and forgotten about trying to find the candle by magic. Yuli would probably laugh at her. Gideon would just roll his eyes. Either way, Mina was trying to suddenly avoid the responsibility to her love life, which was easy to do, since ignoring problems always worked out, right? Besides, having Serenity comment that the book of spells at the end of the Blue is for Nightmares piqued her interests, "Oh really? Is that your expert opinion?" Maybe she was asking too many questions, but she was far too curious now. The sabrina one clearly backfired on her as a snort escaped the older woman, "Ah...I can see that. Real life does get in the way of pet ownership. Sometimes I wish Faerie, my cat, could talk, but then I think about all the times she's knocked something of mine off a table or a counter and suddenly I'm thrilled she can't."

Serenity grinned. "Sometimes, it has nothing to do with the colour of the candle, and just watching the dancing patterns of flame is enough to answer any questions you might have." Lighting a candle near her was not a good thing when she was supposed to be concentrating on something, which is why she was more likely to burn incense when she needed to concentrate, as she tended to get a little lost when looking into a flame.
She nodded when asked about crystals. "The different crystals have different meanings, just like the candles. Hematite." She held up her hand to show the hematite and tiger's eye bracelet that she was wearing. "This stone is great to help keep you grounded, also helps with focus. While the tigers eye offers healing, protection and success." She brought out the necklace she was wearing, a woven pentacle with a triquetra in side the star and in the middle of the celtic trinity was a bright blue stone that was flecked with gold and white. "This is lapus lazuli, good for bring out power, knowledge and protection. The two crystals that people are most familiar with are clear quartz, the master healer, and amethyst, the sobering stone."
Reni had no issues with the conversation turning to books, as it wasn't often that she found people who were into the same books as her, or ones she could recommend without people looking at her like she was nuts. She laughed and shrugged. "I don't know about expert opinion, but it's a good book as far as spells go." She offered. She laughed at the antics of the other woman's cat. "I love your cat's name! We have a very large black cat back home, and she's loud enough without being about to talk. I could only imagine what it would be like if she could talk, and shudder to think!" It was times when she was working magic, that she missed having a familiar, but she hadn't found one here, so she did without.
"Ah, that's true. Although, sometimes I think I just get lost in watching the flame and my questions float away with it," Mina said now, laughing a little bit. She wasn't sure if that meant that the candle had helped her or merely distracted her long enough to forget her antics. The young woman supposed that either way, from the candle's perspective at least, it had solved her problems. Still, it became evident through Serenity's words that she had much to learn in the way of spiritual witchcraft between the colors of candles and the meanings behind various crystals. Mina listened intently as the older woman rattled off all of their meanings, "Man, I should be taking notes," she mused out loud now, "And get my hands on some Hematite since I probably need some grounding in life." The young woman was quite certain that every person in her life would suggest that.
There was a minor distraction from crystals and their powers though, as the conversation derailed into books - another topic that Mina often favored - especially when people read their fair share of fantasy and young adult. Laughter escaped her at Serenity's words on the spell book now in the back of Mina's last reading, "Oh? Well, if it has your stamp of approval, I feel like it must be good to dabble in then." After all, Serenity Delca appeared to be full of wisdom as far as modern witchcraft went. And clearly, she also had a great sense of cat names. Laughter bubbled from Mina now, "Ah! Well, I am quite estatic that it's not just my cat who's out to annoy me then if yours loves to talk. What is their name? Do they help you out with your candles and crystals?"

Reni grinned. "Sounds like the candle flame did it's job then." She said with a laugh. "The universe doesn't always gives us answers. Sometimes a clear head it clarity enough." And sometimes that was the most annoying lesson to learn, especially when you wanted an answer that was a little more than a simple yes or no. She grinned and shook her head about taking notes. "I'm not going to test you on this later." She teased with a laugh. "Google is your friend in anything candle and crystal related. You just need to know the correct way to word what you want to know." And, after a while, you wouldn't need the internet as a reference, it would just come naturally. "A lot of black coloured crystals are good for grounding. Hematite, as I mentioned before, Shungite, Smoky Quartz, Black Agate, Black Onyx and Black Tourmaline, just to name a few. Each with their own grounding properties. The best way to find which one is right for you is to hold them and the right one will let you know."
She shrugged and grinned. "There's no more powerful spell, than the ones you write yourself. Even if they are blended from ones you have found from other places." She offered with a shrug. She smiled as she thought about the cat that had just turned up at the house she grew up in. "Her name is Mielikki. She's a giant black Forest Cat who just appeared one day and decided our family belonged to her. Sadly, she lives with my parents in Virginia, over in the U.S. of A. She was good at knowing when she was needed while I was studying, like sleeping on my bed so that I couldn't go to bed before I finished what needed to be done." She missed having a cat around, but worked too long hours for her to feel that she could give an animal the time they needed. "I have plants at home, they just don't tend to be as vocally opinionated as cats." Plants were opinionated in their own ways, but they couldn't tell you what was wrong, but they didn't really fit into the familiar role.
Mina could help but to smile at the older woman's observation, "I think you are quite right." She concluded, before adding, "And I may have to jot down that universe quote of yours. I feel like it's a good statement for a desk reminder."Heavens only knew how much she needed constant reminding to keep herself grounded. Then again, if she were always grounded, Mina would never fully be her true self - and wouldn't that be a shame? The young woman did suppose however that some of her friends would probably enjoy a more chill Mina Cohen in their lives. But where was the fun in that?
Jokingly, she let out a small 'phew' when Serenity informed her that she would not be tested on this, but did point out that Google was her friend - something that was often forgotten in a state of panic. Laughter escaped Mina at the thought, even as the other woman started rattling off so many stones and all of her meanings. It made it quite clear that picking one might be quite hard, what if she had several needs? But then, an idea hit her, "Reni - is it possible to use multiple stones at once?" After all, she was a jewelry designer, "What if I create a piece with multiple stones?"
She tapped her lips, mulling over Serenity's words now, "Huh. Interesting. Guess I'll be trying out some spell writing when I get home." She wondered if it worked like all of her books and television shows, or if there was somehow something a bit more magical about it. Brown eyes watched as a smile came to the other woman's face now, warm as ever, as her cat was brought up. Mina listened and couldn't help but to think how ironic that a woman who was helping her with candles and spells also had a black cat, "Oh! Forest cats rae so lovely. I'm sorry that you had to leave her behind in your home country. I'm sure she misses you." The young woman herself wasn't sure if she could handle apartment living without the companionship of her own cat. A snort of laughter did escape her on the plant comment, "Oh! You're lucky then. You must have quite hte green thumb if the plants talk to you. I have to settle for cacti and succulents, which, I believe are adorable in their own right."
