Station Call: Car Accident. Willow Bridge City. Main Street. Two Cars. Possible Entrapment. Two Injured.
Cayden quickly got up from the table at the first ping of the station call and started getting into his bunk gear and jumping into the back of the truck. He looked up to the front to make sure that everyone was in the truck before rolling his window down and tapping on the side of the truck. His ritual for good luck. Nothing had ever gone wrong when he did it, and thus he did it in the truck of every call. As the sirens blasted, he kept his arm out of the window, keeping watch for other first responders, as well as keeping an eye out for traffic. They slowed down at a red light, making sure that all the cars stopped before making their way through it and coming up to the accident scene quickly. As soon as the truck started slowing down, he opened the door, and the second it stopped he jumped out and moved back to the gear box before grabbing a prybar.
By now the crew knew how each other worked and knew who was grabbing what, but of course Jamie had them run drills all the time, and thus he was the one that grabbed the Prybar, while someone else grabbed the Jaws of Life upon exit of the truck for any possible entrapments. Their duties changed based on the calls of course. When there was a fire he was part of the team that went into the house, although they tended to use a buddy system when it came to inside just in case of a collapse or if someone went down, there was always someone right there.
He ran towards the first car that was near him and saw the door crushed and it looked like the car was t-boned from the other vehicle. Why couldn't people just pay attention? What was worth getting through the traffic light? Didn't they understand that it could lead to someone dying. He doubted that anyone could handle killing someone through a car crash. It had to mess with their heads. He tried the door handle, knowing it was most likely jammed and looked at the guy in the car. "Hello, any pain in your neck?" he asked simply while trying to gauge the injuries that it could be. After his quick overview, he could see a gash on the head, and deemed that he needed a c-collar. He looked around for the EMT's to see if they were on scene yet, before turning back after not seeing them. "I'm going to need you to keep your head completely still, can you manage that?" he asked prior to turning towards his squad member behind him. "I need a c-collar stat." he said before taking off his overcoat and throwing it over the side of the door where the glass was still sticking out of the window, only partially broken. Cayden leaned in and looked down to see if his legs were pinned at all, seeing that they weren't and nodding. He felt a hand on his back before reaching to the side and having the c-collar placed in his hand. "I'm going to put this around your neck to keep you safe. We're going to have to pry the door open, but there shouldn't be an issue with glass since it already broke." he said simply before pulling his jacket off, dropping it to the ground, and grabbing the prybar that he placed against the side of the car and moving it into position. He looked around to the others and nodded "Everyone ready? he said before seeing the EMT's finally show up. "We'll need a backboard. We have a head laceration, and potential injury to the c-spine". He moved the prybar back towards the backdoor and pushed hard twice, and the door popped open.
He moved out of the way as the backboard came into place and the EMT's took over for this one. He quickly nodded, grabbed his jacket off the ground before moving his way to the other group where Jamie was with the SUV that crashed into the vehicle. "First vehicle cleared." he said simply to this group before moving to the passenger side and looking into the vehicle. This time it was a woman and she was already in a c-collar and they were working on extrication here. He saw the second set of EMT's coming up for the second car and smirked. Of course. They'd send this team with them, and he could never help himself. He moved over to where they were staging to get the woman upon her being out of the vehicle and slung his jacket over his shoulder. Jamie had this, he didn't ever have to worry when he was there. Their Chief always had their back, and they never had to worry when he was there. "So what brings you to my side of town?" he said with a smirk, although well aware of why they were there. They got a call just as much as his squad had. "I knew you couldn't stay away though"
Maddie was having a quiet shift so far. She was currently reading her book in the ambulance bay, lost in the words of the Christmas romance novel she was reading.
All of a sudden, the alarm went off - signaling that there was a call for her to attend to. She jumped off her chair and ran towards the ambulance, glad the keys were close by. She was given the address over the radio and drove off, flicking on the lights and sirens so other drivers on the road would move out of the way.
From the call, it sounded like a car accident and that the firefighters were on their way - by the address she knew they would be there before her. She was lucky the other drivers on the road moved out of the way as soon as they saw or heard the lights so she arrived in record time.
Quickly finding a spot for the large vehicle, she jumped out of the driver's side before going around the back. Opening the back with one hand, she pulled the gurney and her kit out before running with both items towards the scene of the accident.
She turned to hear one of the firefighters talking to her. "Wow. I come to help you with the accident and this is the welcome I get?" Maddie knew most of the firemen by now, but she didn't recognize this one. "Someone called 999 and everyone gets called out to the scene. I thought they taught that at the Fire Academy." She raised her eyebrow and shook her head.
"You going to lead me to where I need to go or are you going to let this person suffer?" She didn't get much information from the call, but she was always prepared to deal with the worst case scenarios.
Cayden laughed at her reply before shrugging. "We already did most of the work, all you have to do is be the chauffer for the injured!" he said with a smirk. "I'm well aware of how dispatch works, need me to assist in getting the patient into the ambulance? Need help getting them onto the gurney?" he said before looking back over to the vehicle and seeing Jamie getting the door off finally. He smirked before gesturing with his arms to head towards his boss.
He moved over towards the vehicle as well and smiled. "The offer still stands you know?" he asked before he felt a hand hit the back of his head. He turned slightly and saw Jamie standing there and let out a chuckle. "Hawkins. Behave." Cayden laughed and rubbed the back of his head before grabbing a broom off of the truck and starting to clear up the debris. "I promise I'm not being gross when I say that I'm here for any help you may need"
Maddison shook her head again. "Is that all you think I do? Drive injured people around and get them to the Hospital?" She hated looking incompetent - especially in front of other first responders. The dark haired woman knew what she was doing and did it well.
"If you could help me that would be great, I'm driving solo today. Partner was a no show." Something about her cat being sick, but Maddie could see right through the lie. She continued to wheel the gurney towards the car, which didn't look like it had been totaled.
She glanced over at Jamie and gave him a wave. It seemed like the Fire Chief had his hands full with the crew and that he was in desperate need of an alcoholic drink. "Sounds like someone better get back to work." She appreciated the comment, stopping the gurney beside the car door. "You? Gross? Geez, I really didn't think you knew what chivalry was. Alright, I'm ready to move the patient." She made sure the gurney was out of the way and waited for the help.
Cayden smiled as he could tell he had gotten her riled up. "I mean... that is part of your job is it not?" he asked with a smirk. Cayden nodded when she asked for help. "Chief, she's solo, want me to stay then she drops me back off at the station after?" he asked to Jamie. He wasn't sure what the Chief would say, but they were fully staff, going 1 man down for about an hour or so wouldn't be that bad. He helped her move the gurney into position, and put the wheel locks on before moving to the side to assist her in moving the patient to the gurney.
Upon Jamie allowing him to go with her he smirks. "I guess you can call me your partner, at least for this call" he said with a smirk before unlocking the wheels on the gurney upon the patient being put on and grabbing the other side. "As I said before, I'm here for all of your assistance. Want me to drive? Or stay back with the patient" he said with a smile.
"It's part of it, but I do like to think it's more complicated than that." It was almost like if someone said his job was just putting a fire out, he most likely wouldn't be happy with that either. "I'd like to think you know more about my job than that."
Maddie knew she should have handled it by herself, but she also couldn't drive and look after the patient at the same time. She glanced over at the Fire Chief, not knowing what he would say. Staffing issues were real for the paramedics. When the Chief gave Cayden the nod, she waved as a thank you and helped wheel the victim towards the ambulance. "Alright, partner. When's the last time you helped a patient anyway?"
She raised her eyebrows. How dare he suggest that he drive HER ambulance? "You? Drive? Yeah, in your dreams buddy. I'll drive you deal with her." Maddie also needed to gather information about the incident for her report. She turned and opened the back of the amublance, keeping both doors open. "Let's lift her in and get going. What can you tell me about the accident? I'll need to write a report once we drop her off."
Cayden smiled and let out a little laugh. "Everything with you is complicated" he smirked before nodding. "Ah yes, the absolutely best person that deals with my shit on every call we go to together" he couldn't help but laugh. He knew that paramedics were some of the more stressed first responders just due to the massive amounts of calls that they could respond to. Firefighters generally had three types of calls, rescues, where they're assisting the paramedics, fires, and accidents. He much preferred fires, but that was because he got to run into the buildings and rescue anything still inside, as well as knockdown afterwards. Those were his favorite parts, but sometimes he enjoyed accidents that ended well, like today's.
"I help patients every shift!" he exclaimed with a laugh before smiling over at her again. "Of course since I'm so out of practice, it'd be best for me to drive right" he said with a wink before laughing at her defensiveness over him driving her rig. He helped get the gurney into the back of the ambulance and climbed in. "Hello, my name is Cayden, and up front we have the lovely Madi who will be safely driving us to the hospital" he said with a smirk and giving a quick glance up front before checking a drawer and grabbing a pen light and sitting down near the womans head. He was sure that she had a concussion, or something else from the impact. She was in a c-collar already, and he placed his hands on either side of her head ensuring that everything was secure before moving the pen back and forth into her eyes trying to see if there was any delayed pupil reactions for a potential check for a concussion. "Ma'am by chance do you know what day it is? As well as your name?" he asked before taking a quick glance over her to assess for any other injuries.
He noticed some blood on the side of her face, and figured it was either from the airbag or the glass from the window breaking. "Looked like a classic t-boned car, the other patient's door was jammed, had to pry it open, airbags deployed in both vehicles, seems like the glass from both vehicles led to some lacerations. Neither were pinned in via the steering column, but both were entrapped inside the vehicles, most likely due to frame damage. Simple extrications, and both patients seemed stable upon extrication and stabilization of their spines." he said towards Madison, but at the same time was using gauze and some saline that he found after searching a few drawers, probably messing up her organization of her rig a little, but he wasn't completely use to where she had everything, and it took him a bit to find the stuff. He cleaned up the blood, and took a look at the wound. "Category 1 laceration to the right temple, possible glass inclusions. Want me to remove them in the rig or wait for the hospital?" he asked simply. He wasn't completely sure what the standards were at this point, but he figured asking wouldn't hurt.
Maddison scoffed, closing the door once the patient was inside. "Right, like you've know me for years or something." The woman tended to keep her private life private from the people she worked with. She didn't have a romantic relationship and she spent her free time at the barn - so there wasn't really much to tell. "Pretty much. You fight the fires and we get left with the patients." Maddie laughed, shaking her head.
"When's the last time you did CPR then?" She knew how hard Jamie worked for them to keep the victim's alive until they arrived - but it was usually a specific person who did so. Maddie made her way to the front of the rig, climbing in the driver's side and prepared herself to drive. The patient stirred, opening her eyes. "I...uhm. My name is Caro..le Hughes. I think it's December?"
"Alright, you'll probably have to do a statement at the hospital about the accident. I'm sure you know that already." At least the patient was stable for now - she started the engine and began driving off towards the hospital - flicking on the red lights and sirens.
"We will leave it for the Hospital, I'm slightly suspicious it will do more damage if we do it now. Did you tell dispatch we were coming?" She drove off towards the Hospital, driving as fast as she was allowed.
Cayden smirked and let out a small chuckle. "You've been dreaming about me for years Madi, it's ok to admit it" he said with a smile. "Ah yes, nothing but fires, no accidents, or saving the poor defenseless cats stuck in trees" he said while shaking his head. "Last shift we had a rescue response that I had to do CPR. I'll remind you once again, we help on rescues too" he says with a wink and a smirk before moving onto helping the patient.
"Well Carole, you seem to have cognitive function, so I'm not as worried about some things, but when we get to the hospital I'm sure they'll do all sorts of tests to ensure that you don't have a concussion. You do have some lacerations, so I'm going to cover the side of your face, where they are, with some gauze at this time to try to contain some of the blood. I'm not going to press down in case of pushing some of the glass in. " he explained before using some steri-strips to tape the gauze to the side of her head.
He nodded, not realizing that she probably wouldn't see it and then grabbed his radio. "Dispatch, this is Hawkins, riding with Stevenson to the hospital, possible head injury, with a laceration with some glass inclusions, as well as some minor injuries, please have them on standby, we're about - " he paused prior to looking towards Madi hoping that she'd get that he needs an ETA to relay.
Maddie laughed sarcastically, shaking her head as she continued to drive towards the hospital. "You wish. It's the other way around. You've been dreaming about taking me out on a date." She wanted to say more, but it wasn't an appropriate conversation to have in front of a patient. Cayden had always gotten on her nerves ever since they started working together. Going on a date with him was the last thing on her mind.
"I'll give you guys that, but who usually keeps them alive during transport?" She would admit in a professional situation that both teams worked well together - focusing on getting the patient what they needed. There were some different personalities at the Fire Station, leaving Maddie wondering how they all got along at the end of the day. The brunette arched her eyebrow, slightly happy to see some professionalism from him. "There should be some ointment for her lacerations in the bottom drawer." She also couldn't tell how bad they were from the front of the ambulance.
The sirens were going off as she drove through a red light, knowing the hospital wasn't far away. "Three minutes! I'm going as fast as I can." She called, hoping she was loud enough for dispatch to hear her.
