It was not Izzie's day. She had finished late off her night shift and come home to a bombsite of a mess - strike number one. She had swapped off with Kieran, who'd gone to work and left her in charge of the troops. They're been out of milk for tea, as she couldn't have coffee right now - strike number two. She could have grabbed some on her way home if she'd known, she couldn't help but bitterly hope the last little bit of it that had gone into Kieran's coffee was sour. The kids had been exhausting. She knew she wasn't going to get much sleep with it being daylight hours, and she needed to take care of the children, but they had run rampant the whole day - barely giving her a moment's peace. Between upsetting each other, not sharing their toys, demanding her attention, turning noses up at their lunch, Izzie was at her wit's end by the end of the day.
She'd wanted to sit down and put her feet up with a glass of wine - she wished - and to put on a cheesy film. She loved the girls and she felt blessed to have her son, but sometimes they sure were trying. She found herself looking forward to 8pm, when Kieran's end of shift time would roll round and he could tag team in. She'd managed to tidy up the house in bits and pieces throughout the day but she hadn't tackled the washing, feeling too tired to even look at it. Especially as her son began crying into his monitor for the sixth time. She heaved herself to the feet and glanced at the time, frowning slightly. It was almost nine, and no sign of Kieran, though she hadn't had a text from him.
As half nine, then ten rolled around, and then even half ten, she started to wonder if he'd decided to join the local circus instead of coming home. She didn't have time to sit there and fester, even if it wasn't his fault he was late it was still one of the worst days to be late, as the kids woke from a nightmare and then had her read a story through three times. She didn't begrudge them it really, but .. just not today. Strike three. A text would have been nice, and her eyes felt so dry and gritty she could have fallen asleep standing up. Finally, there was a lull as the children slept, and she collapsed onto the sofa with a huff.
